Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Colts got the ball first, so the Chiefs defense got the first shot against what has been the worst offense in the NFL so far. And those struggles for the Colts continued as they gained a mere 4 yards before facing a 4th down and being forced to punt. But their special teams picked up the slack when Skyy Moore muffed the punt and the Colts recovered on the Chiefs 4 yard line. This time they again moved 4 yards in 3 plays, but that meant it was a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to make it 7-0 Colts.

The Chiefs finally got the ball and unusually struggled as Mahomes got the call 3 plays and, outside a 3 yard scramble, had two incompletions to MVS, one of which was a brutal overthrow that would have been a sure touchdown.

On the Colts third drive technically they got the first couple of 1st downs of the game from either team by riding Jonathon Taylor almost to midfield, but then they decided to go to Matt Ryan and ended up stalling and punting once again. This time Moore let it bounce, but it ended up bouncing within inches of the endzone, giving the Chiefs the worst field position possible.

With their backs against the wall the Chiefs were a bit conservative going to CEH the first two plays, but on the 3rd play Kelce was just short of the first down marker and once again the Chiefs went 3 and out, and the Colts got good field position at their 42 yard line. The defensive struggle continued, as the Chiefs finally got good field position with the Matt Ryan getting strip sacked and losing 16 yards on a 4th down attempt.

Starting on the Colts 35 Mahomes finally found MVS for a short 6 yard gain on the first play, but CEH gave half of it back after running backyards 3 yards. But it was a deep 29 yard pass on 3rd down that finally got the Chiefs close to the goal line, and another pass to a wide open Kelce got points on the board, but a missed extra point by the substitute kicker meant the Colts maintained a 7-6 lead.

The 1st quarter came to an end on a Jonathon Taylor run on 1st down run for 5 yards, taking a 2nd and 5 into the 2nd quarter.

2nd Quarter

The 2nd quarter started with a Matt Ryan who suddenly looked like the Matt Ryan of old, converting a 3rd down on an 8 yard pass, then a 17 yard pass to Pierce on the next play, and converted another 3rd down with a 7 yard pass to Dulin. But for some reason Indianapolis decided to move away from the hot hand and after two runs and a screen the Colts kicked a field goal to make it 10-6.

The next drive was a minefield for injuries. On the first play of the drive it looked like Hardman aggravated his heel injury on a jet sweep, then on the next play the Colts defender Blackmon got injured tackling MVS after a 9 yard catch. On the next play Mahomes got sacked, but then got bailed out after pressure got to him again but the bad pass resulted in pass interference. The Chiefs did make their way across midfield, but eventually stalled after a low pass to Smith-Schuster barely hit the ground on 3rd and 9. The special teams finally showed up though, as Townsend decided it was the Colts turn to start a drive on their own 1.

The Colts did a lot better getting out of a hole, as Ryan got a nice throw to Pierce for 30 yards on the very first play. But once again Ryan got strip sacked, this time Dunlap got the sack and Sneed got the recovery to once again give Chiefs awesome starting field position, and once again they took advantage as it only took 3 plays for the Chiefs to get a 1st and 1, including a bizarre fumbled pitch to Kelce that he took to the 1, but it took 3 more plays to get it into the endzone on a CEH run. They converted a 2 point conversion on a really close play to Kelce that took forever to review and honestly looked short, but it was 14-10 Chiefs.

The Colts got it back with 1:46 on the clock and 2 timeouts. They almost went 3 and out but got bailed out by a defensive hold. But then Frank Clark showed up on a great sack to push them back 11 yards, which Ryan couldn’t overcome, and Mahomes got the ball with 34 seconds (although they had to use all their timeouts to stop the clock after the penalty) but with great field position just short of midfield.

Mahomes Almost got it to Watson for the touchdown, but not only did the Chiefs defender make a great play but there was a holding penalty that would have negated it anyway. Afterwards they decided to run out the clock, which made Mahomes very unhappy as he got caught on camera arguing with Eric Bienemy as they went into the locker room for halftime.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the half, and despite the first “play” being a false start penalty on Orlando Brown it only took two actual plays to get past mid field on a couple quick passes from Mahomes. After that they matriculated the ball with runs to Pacheco (and a Mahomes scramble) and more short passes, getting it down to the 15 yard line before facing a 4th and 1 which they converted with a classic fullback dive to Burton. A 10 yard scramble set up a 1st and goal, but two stuffed runs and and incompletion to Kelce that probably should have been pass interference led to a short field goal, 17-10 Chiefs and burning over 7 minutes of game clock.

Jonathon Taylor managed to pick up a first down on the ground a couple plays into the Colts first drive of the 2nd half, then got a reception to convert a 3rd and long on a checkdown. Ryan then found Pittman for 26 yards for a rare trip deep into Chiefs territory. But after a negative run by Taylor Ryan got sacked once again, this time by Nick Bolton, forcing the Colts to also end a promising drive with a field goal, and it was back to a 4 point 17-13 margin.

Pacheco almost gave the Colts another miracle special teams fumble on the kickoff return, but the slipup still meant the Chiefs started with poor field position on their own 12. On the 3rd play Kelce converted a 3rd and 6 with a big 20 yard gain as he broke multiple tackles. After a Colts timeout the Chiefs ran a fun flea flicker that resulted in a 26 yard catch and run by Noah Gray. One more run and the 3rd quarter came to an end on an exciting note.

4th Quarter

The final quarter started with a 2nd and 6 on the Colts 32, which was converted on a quick pass to MVS. But that was the end of the good news as a negative run, an incompletion after escaping the pocket, then a close but no cigar pass to Gray with a defender around Mahomes’ ankles meant the good drive resulted in the field goal unit going out. But it was a fake! Unfortunately it went nowhere and the Colts got the ball back within striking distance.

A couple plays into the drive it looked like Sneed was going to get the pick, but it slipped through his hands and ended being a big play instead taking the Colts into Chiefs territory. A couple more plays later the Colts looked like they picked up a clutch 1st down, but on replay the receiver was clearly short and it was 4th and 1 on the 31 yard line. The Colts also passed on a field goal and also failed as Nick Bolton made a huge play in the air to stop Jonathon Taylor short.

It looked rough the first two plays, but Mahomes made a great pass to Smith-Schuster on 3rd and 13 for a huge 53 yard gain to suddenly get back in the redzone. Unfortunately a touchdown bounced off of Kelce’s hands, and after a hold on Wylie (which the Chiefs thought should have been offset by a facemask on Mahomes) the Chiefs kicked a field goal for real but was missed, keeping it at 17-13.

On the next drive the Colts quickly faced yet another 4th and 1 and shockingly went for it despite being deep in their own territory, but actually managed to convert on a Matt Ryan sneak. It was almost all for naught though as just another 3 plays later Ryan got sacked by Nick Bolton, but Chris Jones said something the refs didn’t like and gave the Colts a free first down.

The Colts had 1st and 10 at the 29 after the 2 minute warning, but got a hold on the first play after the break to make it 1st and 20. Jonathon Taylor responded with a big run of 12 yards, then Ryan found Pierce to get the 1st down anyway. But a couple plays later Ryan finds Woods for a touchdown to take a 20-17 lead.

The Chiefs got the ball with 18 seconds, and after an incompletion Mahomes got it to MVS to the 46 with 8 seconds left. But the Colts got an interception on a deflected pass and the Chiefs lost a game they should have won.

Chargers and the Bills lost as well. Must be upset weekend. Miami is the only team that can brag this week, which sucks because Tyreek Hill has a big mouth.

Well, my 60th birthday pretty much sucked. Special teams were real bad, with the exception of the punter. Defense actually looked pretty good until Jones opened his mouth. Offense was way out of sinc.

Masterclass in how to lose. Dear lord what a shit show.

First what went right:
Darrius Harris played pretty good. How he did not play over Niemann last year is inexcusable.
Townsend was excellent.
Overall the defense was really good. Well timed blitzes. Good short yardage defense. How much is that the colts being horrible. I don’t know but the D did enough to win outside of the CJ95 penalty.
Did I miss anything?

What went wrong:
There are some games when Andy can’t get his fat ass out of his own way and this was one of those games. First and foremost his treatment of the kicker was despicable and the results were predictable. The dude missed an xp. Butker misses xps all the time. Next TD in the first half you stupidly go for 2 instead of letting your kicker get his head straight and going up by 3 in a game where 3 points was going to be a big deal. I don’t care that it worked. Dumb call. Then you have a 40 yarder on a 4th and 10. Not a 4th and 2. And you tell your kicker, I don’t fucking trust you. Predictably (as Romo did) he missed the next one.
Skyy Moore, wtf. It’s one thing to muff a punt. It’s another to muff one when you shouldn’t even be attempting to catch the ball. Then to lose it again in the sun.
Short yardage run game. We do not need 3 small rbs active. The play calling in short yardage is atrocious too.
Orlando Brown you screwed up by not taking the money. There is no way you are making more money next year.
Offense in general is very blah.
Chris Jones. Wtf dude.

Andy you BETTER either

A) get EB & Patrick in a room with yourself….and address like men. When door re-opens IT’S ADDRESSED!

B) Take over all play calling

This issue will grow & grow between them ..unless addressed in-person LIKE MEN

Granted, if the officials don’t pick up the flag and actually call the face mask like they should have, we may not have to worry about him missing that FG. But still no excuse for his performance or anyone else on ST, for that matter.
