Science or Conspiracy? I’ll take science, thank you very much … an O/T Extra (Just Because)

so I happened upon a terrific little article about the origins of Covid, fascinating arguments, but it just seems to me that it’s “OMG the Fucking CHINESE!” conspiracy with absolutely no proof of anything (but by golly they can mistake the date of a dental appointment) as opposed to real, actual … you know:  science and genetics and number crunching and like, well … much more compelling than something the CIA heard from a guy at a pizza place in North Kansas City

but that’s like just, you know, my opinion … and that’s my “O/T Rant” (for tonight, and Happy Red Friday)

is everyone drinking Bloody Mary’s (made with Bert’s)?

Geaux Chiefs (and you know about the Raiders)

It should be obvious by now that I have little use for conspiracy theories, and indeed once dismissed the stories that Covid was released by China’s gov’t – but that was before it came out that the WHO repeatedly bent over backwards to keep them happy and that outside investigators were strictly supervised. Along the way, we have China’s gov’t doing all manner of sketchy things, from widespread censorship, illegally operating intelligence operations using blackmail and extortion to bypass extradition hearings of legal US residents, breaking its word repeatedly WRT Hong Kong residents (while trying to keep those who the UK offered legal residency to those who lived there under British rule from escaping), not to mention enacting policies intended to erase the culture of Tibetans and outright eliminate the Uyghurs.

Considering that the whole “Chinese people eat bats*, so it must have come from a wet market” isn’t a very strong story, and that other, actually scientifically-based evidence has come to light, the possibility that it escaped from that lab in Wuhan instead of from an unknown market vector there still has life.

*In fact, that’s a fairly bigoted concept because wild bats don’t have much meat to them, so why eat them? How’d such a remote-contact (as opposed to ongoing-contact flu, such as from domestic birds and swine) variant manage to make the jump to humans? Not to mention more than one serious geneticist stating that the virus shows signs of it having been edited, among other actual, verifiable facts calling the wet market story into question. There’s even a company in the US who sought permission to partner with China to research what makes SARS-type viruses able to jump from bats to humans, and elsewhere I saw mention of Chinese researchers going to Southeast Asia for bat research.

And as for the ability to keep things secret, unlike the USA, China’s gov’t doesn’t hesitate to imprison those who say things that displease them, and it’s even been publicly codified into law that it’s illegal to publish anything that might stir up any discontent against the gov’t.

An intentional act on China’s part is a bridge too far here, but a cover-up by those who control the gov’t is not. Is anything proven, at this point? No, but it’s sure as hell more of an open question than the reality of the single shooter for JFK and the factual Apollo landings.
