AG! It’s your Saturday Night Arrowthread. Come on in the Chiefs takes are not hot or cold, they’re just right. Join AG to discuss.

Hello Arrowhead Guys. This is a last minute open thread that I’m throwing together because I noticed that we didn’t have one. Unless you’ve been under a rock the past couple days you’ve probably noticed some of the drama between Tyrann Mathieu & Anthony Hitchens vs. the Kansas City Chiefs Toxic Fanbase.

I’m going to post a couple Twitter links to help catch you up, but I’m planning on including all of this for the main Giants vs. Chiefs post that I create tomorrow. Until then here’s a little bit of the noise from the Interwebz:

The Honey Badger is sorry…

Meh…

Happy Saturday

What are your Halloween plans for tomorrow? Let us know in the comments section. If you’re not celebrating Halloween just throw us your victory of the week! Nasrani–what are we jamming to tonight? Let’s roll!

Time’s Yours!

I leave you with a positive thought – Celebrate the good things in your life and realize that, even though the bad things in life may have brought you down, you never had an ex-wife that permanently damaged your furniture. Take care all.

Heh, that would be an improvement over what I went through. Still going through, too, but it’s looking more and more like I’ll never come close enough to normal.

I understand y’all, not only because I grew up with normal people, but because I’ve studied how folks interact to try to figure out how to seem more normal. For decades, on an ongoing basis. I was good enough in my early 20s that I could break down the possible courses of action and the likely outcome of each of them. I can’t claim the others were accurate, but he went with the worst one every single time. And sure enough, every single time things worked out the way I predicted. I understand y’all, but I can’t make you understand me. I’m too strange.

You know – I just had a wild thought – no way to prove it either way. Do you suppose that Mathieu intentionally popped off on social media to put the heat on him rather than the defense? I would say probably not but you never know.

Interesting, and while I agree it’s an outlier, it may be something he can use to inspire his crew. Opportunities are abundant in that context, and when something good pops up, I expect he’s all over it, even if it’s a fukup of his own making. I’ve become very good at turning negatives into positives, because I understand that context matters.

The advice that I give to all young teachers. Whatever happens in your class – good or bad – pretend that you wanted it to happen. Students set fire to your room – you wanted to see how they would react without supervision. Every student fails the test – you were seeing how they would score without being properly prepared.

Good advice to anyone, seize the opportunities to improve the outcome. Easy to get too enamored of your pet plan, but such plans come at a cost, they can’t tolerate the inevitable disruptions. More open-options, flexible plans can exploit opportunities better, even the negative ones. Attitude and outlook matter as much as intelligence here, and I’d argue that it’s effectively an intelligence multiplier, WRT getting to the outcome you want to achieve.

Reznor’s said that his initial reaction was dismissive or such, but he was neck-deep in producing an album at the time. On second impression, he basically had a Dolly Parton moment. Much respect to those who admit it.

When I coached football, one of the first things that I would tell the team is that the people in the stands were undefeated. In their mind, they make every catch, make every tackle, and dominate. Had to tell my softball ladies the same – their parents never strike out or make an error in the stands.

I collect such homilies in my memory, you know. I can’t exactly riffle through them individually, but when prompted, it’s basically there. In fact, I often have a selection to choose from, if time allows. There was an old tradition of religions to collect and organize such sayings into texts, and today those are known as “wisdom literature”. Those who wrote Proverbs, for instance, were following an Egyptian tradition that predated them.

And Proverbs is my favorite book in the Bible, because a lot of things they though important enough to preserve are still true today. The ones that do not apply are interesting as social archeology, a glimpse into their values and outlooks. I may not believe that it’s the literal, inerrant word of God, but if someone trashes the Bible as 100% fiction, well, what do y’all expect me to do, sit quietly by? A Bible is a window into the deep past, and even their superstitions and fictions are worth study, because that helps us understand the folks who initially wrote it down, at least somewhat.

A good way to view all religious texts. Took a comparative religion course, the prof was a Baptist preacher, but his idea was that god gave us what we could absorb/understand at the time and scriptures should not be read literally.
Sadly he missed half the course due to illness, was looking forward to talking to him on some subjects.

After hearing the videos, I think he’s sincere in what he said. I think that Mathieu is the sort of person who wears their emotions on their sleeve. As someone who’s challenged when it comes to dealing with frustration, I can easily relate to how frustrations might make him verbally “bark” when hot, but when he cooled down realized that his bark had some bite to it. I think we’ve all experienced such moments, and given that the players are in a high-stress environment when things aren’t working, I think we should let that one pass.

For contrast, Bono’s “Oh, no!” about KC food was not the product of such stress. While I understand he was most likely speaking specifically about seafood, it was still a very undiplomatic thing to say – which is arguably worse than him hating BBQ, or whatever. That’s because he wasn’t considering KC at all, and indifference is worse than hate, because you don’t really mean anything to the indifferent. You’re nothing to them, less than an afterthought.

I think that Mathieu is upset about the state of the defense and/or his level of play and is sensitive to the criticism. I am sure that all the players are busting their butt to do better – it comes with the territory but it is stressful. I believe most fans will forgive – most assuredly if the defense does improve as the season progresses.

I believe it will, and the Landlord’s a big part of the reason why. He’s the leader of the DBs, and he’s not happy with where anyone is at, himself included. That’ll make a body touchy, but if they’re determined enough, they’ll succeed. Challenges? Honey badgers don’t care!

I would assume there was a summoning to the GM’s office with a representative from ownership in the room that gave him a pretty good understanding of what is expected of him and what his contract has to say about conduct unbecoming. Hopefully he does realize that he has no room to bitch when the unit he is supposedly one of the leaders of stinks out loud. Fix the shit on the field and the criticizing will stop. 7 yds a play is historically bad, giving up 3.3 points per drive is also historically bad. Fans have every right to expect better from the highest paid DL inthe game and theres a rookie out-playing your ass. Do your damn job

Might have simply been a talk with Andy. Not sure how close that posting a negative comment on social media is to conduct unbecoming. Bad PR move on his part though – I am sure that he is trying to fix the crappy play and is frustrated with the results as we are – Striking out against the fans adds fuel to the fire.

Pretty much. All the coaches are talking about how the players are keeping each other accountable, so at most aword or two from AR would get the message across. Hauling him into an office for an official dressing-down would be counterproductive. Fetishists aside, the people you humiliate never love you for it, generally speaking. Yes, that’s a nod to you, WWS, but it’s a lesson that anyone apt to take a hard line on things ought to learn.

Hate to break it to you, but according to Dan, Clark’s been playing well. I haven’t reviewed his full analysis, it was just a tweet I saw today, but I trust Dan’s analyses. He’s not always right, but he’s persistent and meticulous, and so is consistently very good overall. I edited his work here for a long time, so I know what I’m talking about, if I may say so politely.

Now, does that mean he’s playing at his best level? Of course not, and Clark’s said so himself. He knows he can be better than he is now, and he has a lot of pride to play up to. Enough pride to carelessly get himself into trouble? Possibly, but the Clark I remember is a guy who’d run his mouth about his play, and then strive to the utmost to exceed his words. It might be worth remembering this much, though: His busts, if busts they be, are for simple possession of contraband.

There’s no evidence that he so much as showed it off to folks in public, it appears to have been visible in each case. That level of carelessness indicates to me that he had no criminal intent in what he might do with the gun. Guns are a boogeyman, but eliminate that aspect, and it’s comparable to pot busts involving personal-use amounts and knives with illegal blade opening methods.

I have not watched any tape so Clark might be playing much better than everyone gives him credit for. HOWEVER, with such a HUGE contract, he is certainly not making those big splash plays that we expect. That comes with the territory. I feel that the KC fans are more upset with him due to all of the missed time as opposed to his gun violation.

I see where you’re coming from, but we diverge in two places. I understand that expectations of him were high, but I didn’t buy into that. I didn’t expect an instant game-changer, not when he was brought in to found a new defensive scheme. So the first divergence is that I believe that the standard fans have been wanting to hold him to have been unrealistic. The second is that you’re right about the health and legal aspects trending more to the health issues than the legal ones.

However, the problem is that it’s not an either-or situation. What’s happening is a dogpile of conflation, with his detractors piling the legal on top of the health, and then whipping up a social froth about guns as the topping. I hope that you can see where that attitude, even in miniature, can be detrimental.

EAFOX

Most fans – right or wrong – expect instant game-changers. While I believe that some ethical boundaries should exist, the fan has the right to post on social media comments about the legal, the health, the performance, and the social issue. The smart thing is for Clark and Mathieu and others to stay away from social media. Unless you an all -star on a 17-0 team, you are going to have the negative.

Sorry, I know I tend to use a lot of words, but his charges are literally a legal matter, and need to be thought about in legal terms, not social ones. Because if we do otherwise, law becomes a matter of whatever opinion’s popular at the time. As my father once said, “The masses are the asses”, and I think there’s a good deal of truth to that. So law must resist the swings of opinion, and thus lag them.

That’s a good thing, because fads come and go. If you don’t want to be jerked around, you need to smooth things out. In terms of the judicial branch, our judges are better than most folks believe them to be. Prosecutors are another story, and criminal defense lawyers too, but for opposite misunderstandings. I will limit my ranting to this much, never vote for an attorney who brags about their high percentage conviction rate, because they abused the law to do it. I guarantee it, prosecutors like that will cut corners to achieve that goal, leading directly to more wrongful convictions. Those who are comfortable with violating the very laws they are employed to enforced are not to be trusted.

To your first point, I look more at the social aspect from our point of view as fans. I believe that most of us would be super forgiving had Frank was coming off a 25 sack year. Given the fact that he has been struggling and injured, it simply provides more fodder for us to use. I believe there are several here who would welcome Kareem Hunt back.

BleedingRedAndGold
Reply to  EAFOX
10/30/2021 8:58 pm

And believe it or not, I’m one of them, but I don’t think Hunt would ever hire him again, and even Andy may never coach him again, given the opportunity in another context. If you can remember back to the event, and especially the ugly personal aftermath he went through, to try to be understanding toward him, that his cortex controlling impulse control and decision-making hadn’t matured yet.

And you’re likely right about the generalities of the feelings we fans express about him, but I’m the unlucky idiot who has a lot of disagreement with the normal view of things. I can’t help the fact that I have a POV that’s an extreme outlier, radically different from the way the rest of y’all mentally operate. That still bites me on a routine basis, but it’s part of who I am.

As per your second point, I will limit my thoughts to this – every profession has unethical people and that should not be tolerated – especially when tasked with the duty of putting people in prison. There is also a thought for a different interpretation of what might be legal – that is not unethical. The prosecutor and defense attorney might have an honest difference of opinion about what might constitute a legal or illegal search for example.
