Ingram would’ve been nice, but he wasn’t the answer.

We need a draft pick, to replace Clark eventually. In the meantime, more Veach reclamation projects.

We do need another pass rushing DE, probably, but Ingram might’ve actually gotten in the way more than he would’ve helped. Ingram would’ve only been here for a year, and we’ll need to see how Jones and Taco and Ward do for themselves this year because we’ll almost certainly need to look at DE real close next offseason.

Anyway, I’m still convinced that if there’s any thin spot on the roster that’s gonna bite us this year, it’s the receivers.

Perhaps, WRT the WR room, but I have my doubts about how thin we actually are anywhere, be it DE or WR. There are a lot of guys who’ve flown under the radar, for one reason or another, and my guess is that the playbook’s scheme is established for Game 1, optimized for the starters, especially at WR.

If that’s the case, then last year’s playbook was optimized for Kelce, Hill, Watkins, and Hardman, and the depth guys’ section was much smaller. Now in the case of a long-term injury to one of them, in a couple of games he’d have added the replacement’s optimal plays to the installs, but for a game or two? Seems unlikely that he’d shift that hard, knowing he’d have to shift back again.

All in all, that system wouldn’t – and didn’t – downgrade the O last season, but I wonder if a side-effect’s that the backups end up looking like they are a lot worse than they actually are when comparing.

That’d be a nice thought to have. But if Robinson or Pringle are actually better than they’ve looked, then I’d think that at least one other clever GM in the league would’ve taken a shot at them by now.

Anyway, don’t feel bad, it’s not your fault you couldn’t cheer me up. I’m just determined to feel bad about our receivers until I actually see Hardman or somebody actually kicking actual ass as an actual starting WR this season. Good effort, though.

I wasn’t exactly trying to cheer you up, not by intent, just sharing my views on the topic, take’em or leave’em.

As for Hardman, I have been saying since sometime last season that Hardman’s gotten a bad rap over his route-running skills, that the problem wasn’t him, it was because he couldn’t buy time at a specialist’s camp to work on those deficiencies with an expert who can focus a lot more time on him individually. Which he has done this year, so I take the initial reports that his route running has significantly improved fairly seriously, because practice and training time matter. I’m looking forward to seeing his progress.

BleedingRedAndGold
Reply to  BleedingRedAndGold

One additional item: If he’s got his route tree better sorted now, that will show up in other areas. If he can run his routes with confidence, it frees up attention for other things, like tracking or catching the ball. Not to mention that being in the right place at the right time makes his job ever so much easier.

Pay no attention to those who are already hinting that Hardman’s a “bust”, or at least grab a salt shaker when you’re listening to them. Why? Because to them, practice and training time are meaningless, the player must produce the expected results, no matter what obstacles impede them.

It’s been fermenting in the back of my mind for some time now, but Reid seems to have done something of a 180 on his OL preferences. Previously, he preferred lighter, more athletic guys on the interior, so he could pull them as needed for many of his plays. Now the guys projected to start aren’t exactly immobile, but they aren’t really known as being nimble, so what gives?

My guess is that he realized after SBLV, the league, being a herd of copycats, were going to be focusing on getting to Mahomes, early and often. That being the case, surely Prince Patrick would require a royal guard to protect him while he works, and he certainly seems to have done so. Will this OL come to be known as The Great Wall of KC? Only time will tell, but the parts will all be at camp, maybe excepting Long.

Dunno about the rest of y’all, but I would dearly love for him to get a Ring to wave under Howie’s nose any time daddy trots out his.

Couple of completely unsupported thoughts that I have no intention of even trying to support but will type them out anyway…

First, Reid’s screen game isn’t working. Or, anyway it’s a lot less effective than it was. That came to me while I was watching an Eagles rerun on NFLN this weekend, and the announcer made a comment about how much less effective the Eagles’ screen game had become over the past year (using actual stats that I’m too lazy to remember right now much less cite) and how much less often Pedersen had been calling screen plays because of that, and I thought, “well Pedersen’s screen game is Reid’s screen game, pretty much.” Anyway, I wonder if defenses might’ve caught up. Maybe Reid might’ve finally finished the screen chapter of his playbook. And if there’s gonna be significantly fewer called screen plays, then there’s also gonna be somewhat less reason for Olinemen who’re fast enough to run out on screen plays.

And the other thing, the Chiefs had trouble with redzone scoring last year. I think that problem was actually building up for a year or two prior to last year, which thought I have no intention of trying to support with stats but will simply assume as fact. Another thing I’m gonna assume as fact is that the new-look Oline is gonna help with short yardage running which will completely cure our recent redzone scoring problem.

Not unreasonable, and based on last season, I actually agree with the observation. Having said that, I disagree with your perceived source of the issue. IMO the screen game suffered last year primarily due to the lack of any pre-camp work, not because defenses across the league suddenly decoded how to stop all screens from working.

You see, I recall reading a player’s mention of how absolutely meticulous he is about teaching the timing and locations of each player on each one. With a mentality like that, I think it’s likely that rather than try to run screens at a lesser level of preparation, he basically shelved that part of the playbook last year.

I am also unsure if I agree that the new OL will actually cure all the short-yardage problems, but it’ll certainly alleviate them, I can agree to that much.

Berserker

Well, Pedersen didn’t stop running screens because he didn’t think they’d work, he stopped running them because they didn’t work. Anyway, that’s what this announcer was talking about. Can’t remember the exact stat, but it was 1.x average yards per play gained on screen plays, which….not good. And I think this announcer said that was going back into the previous season as well (this was a mid-season game), but not sure about that.

Anyway, I don’t really buy the idea that a lack of preseason screen practice hurt offenses more than defenses, since the basic screen play is designed specifically to work against an unprepared defense. Defenders have to get to certain spots on a screen play, too.

BleedingRedAndGold
Reply to  Berserker
07/19/2021 10:59 pm

Then consider your sample size, the only two teams Reid has been the HC of. Is the entire screen game dead across the league? That’s where your logic is going, because asserting that one of the absolute masterminds of the screen game in NFL history has suddenly become unable to run them anymore doesn’t hold up. Pederson’s screen game was learned from Reid, but that doesn’t mean it was identical.

Now, if Reid shies away from screens again this year, with all the normal prep, I’ll be more inclined to listen to your reasoning. Until then, conclusions can’t be reached between us.

I hear you, but those decisions can affect more than oneself. 20% of new cases nationwide are in my state, virtually all un vaxed, I’m sorry but, that is concerning.
The risk from the vax is nothing compared to the risk from the disease, and there is no legitimate argument against getting the shot other than for those where it is medically contraindicated.
I just don’t get it.

Berserker

Well, the reason you don’t get it is because you believe that the opinion “there is no legitimate argument against getting the shot other than for those where it is medically contraindicated” is a fact instead of an opinion, probably just because it happens to be the opinion that you yourself believe is true.

Doctors are wrong all the time. Drugs have bad unforeseen consequences all the time. Thalidamide, etc. A lot of the people who’re “vax holdouts” right now remember or know family who remembers the last time the government, our government, deliberately lied about a vaccine for the greater good.

And this vaccine ain’t like other vaccines. It’s new science. And that requires doubt.

I decided to get vaccinated as soon as I could. But I might have been wrong. And I’m not asshole enough to completely disregard the possibility that other people might be right where I was wrong, with something as important as their life and their children’s lives.

And, if you’re looking at the possibility that you might be more of an asshole than even me…. then you really need to check yourself.

You are not wrong, but the % of unvaxxed is much higher than one would expect normally from traditionally anti vax segments of society.
It’s pretty clear that the reddest counties have the highest unvaxxed rates, it’s not coincidence.

watched fiction this weekend

Lord of the Rings

The Dwarves recaptured their mountain and attained all the gold the the Dragon had accumulated

Now that was Bilbo, Frodo was called into service 20-30 years later

Soooooo, there was enough treasure to rebuild all of middle Earth, and Bilbo took pretty much nothing for his service….. An Original, he did have My Precious

What the hell happened between in the 30 years?

He could have lived like a King

That pile of gold was so vast that a huge dragon could sleep hidden in it

again my thought is that how did that money get so misspent or wasted that 30 years later middle earth seemed little changed….

The Elves needed no money, nor the enemy should have got any, the Eagles, The shape shifter, Nooooo

Only the Dwarves and the Humans could have screwed up

I have to think something about early 20th century human affairs had to play a part in Tolkien’s writings
