Monday Night College Football OT: Alabama vs Georgia

Welcome to Arrowhead Guys–Monday Night Open Thread. Talk about the Kansas City Chiefs or anything you would like. Time’s Yours.

As the playoffs just begin for the NFL in college their playoffs are concluding with Alabama and Georgia facing off in the championship game for the second time in 5 years (that was way longer ago than I thought). Georgia is favored, but Alabama beat them in the SEC championship so you never know.

I am not understanding this. If the options are either a fumble recovery for Alabama, or intentional grounding on Georgia how can it be a fumble?

That is due to cuts in educational spending for decades plus a bloat on the administrative side. When I was going to school we had a supervisor that covered almost all schools in the county including three high schools. The one I went to had a graduating class of over 730 students. A principal at each school, a vice principal, two deans, and a secretary in the front office. We were also the second richest school in the state (CA). It was also a time when there teacher parent relationship was like they were super glued together. All my teachers knew who my mom was since she taught at a school that was in our athletic conference, so I couldn’t get away with anything. All teachers back then had phones in their room, so they would just call my mom if I tried anything.

Cuts? In constant dollars we are spending double what we did when I was in school per student. It has gone up virtually every year. There is no such thing as a budget cut.

According to national data by $23 billion, or 31% from 2008 – 2015.

No Help In Sight For America’s School Financial Crisis : Coronavirus Updates : NPR

“Remember, schools get about half of their funding from state tax revenues, which have taken a big hit in the pandemic. States were facing budget cuts in the 20-30% range, Griffith says. But thanks, in part, to those federal CARES Act dollars, it’s just “a bad year,” he explains — “between 15 and 20%.””

Add in the fact that the average starting salary for a teacher is $45K per year this last year. My mom made $40K in the early 80’s.
