T-1. New England PatriotsKansas City ChiefsThe tradeChiefs receive pick No. 21; Patriots receive picks Nos. 29, 94, 121
The value winner: Patriots (acquired 6.4 chart points, gave up 4.1)
Surplus value: Late second-round pick
Unless there’s a quarterback involved, I think it’s important to evaluate trades separate from the players selected at those spots. The trade is the process, the pick is the result. And while I’ll touch on the result in a minute, we should be judging the process — and New England’s process in this trade was very strong.
The overwhelming conclusion of charts based on actual player performance is that the difference in production you get out of a player selected at, say, pick No. 29 is much closer to what you get out of pick No. 21 than trades typically indicate. Yes, the player selected at 21 has a better career outlook, but the difference between them and a player at 29 is substantially smaller than the value of additional third-round and fourth-round selections.

Barnwell: Georgia just produced the most valuable college draft class ever. Here’s how the other top 15 fared2dBill BarnwellAs far as the trade itself, New England absolutely comes out ahead.
Now, did the Patriots squander that value by selecting Cole Strange at No. 29? I would argue yes. One of the clearest errors a team can make is selecting a player long before they need to, and that seemed to be the case with Strange. Our Draft Day Predictor indicated there was a 93% chance Strange would be available at the Patriots’ second-round selection. And while we certainly may have misread the market, the Rams’ reaction tells us it probably shocked teams, too.
But the trade on its own was still a very strong return for the Patriots.

seems the Raiders have issues

HENDERSON, Nev. — Dan Ventrelle is out as president of the Las Vegas Raiders, owner Mark Davis announced Friday.
“Dan Ventrelle is no longer with the Raiders organization,” Davis said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

Davis declined to comment to ESPN on the reason for Ventrelle’s departure, saying only the team would fill the vacancy. Ventrelle did not reply to a message.
Ventrelle’s departure continues a sense of palace intrigue within the Raiders organization as it has undergone massive upheaval since moving to southern Nevada from Oakland in 2020.
He was named the team president following the 2021 season after taking over on an interim basis when Marc Badain resigned last July. Ventrelle, who joined the Raiders in 2003, previously served as executive vice president and general counsel and had been with the team for 18 years.

DOR candidate?

5. Edge George KarlaftisKansas City Chiefs (+1800)Karlaftis is my favorite bet on the board at +1800 to win Defensive Player of the Year. The 266-pound edge defender out of Purdue dropped a massive 14 pressures in his true freshman debut against Nevada in 2019 and never looked back. He was a consistent pressure producer early in his college career and kept that pace throughout his three seasons at Purdue, as his green line on the chart below highlights.

Karlaftis might not be the bendiest athlete in the class off the edge, but he’s certainly explosive and that shows in one of the best bull-rushes in the draft class. He joined a Chiefs defense that desperately needed edge help. Karlaftis should step into a starting role opposite Frank Clark, and he’ll be asked to contribute at a high level early in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. It’s worth a bet that he answers that call.

Hey guys! So, poetry book update.

I’m getting very very close to publishing. This will be an E-book out of Lulu. Cost will be $10 USA (comparable amount in converted currency from other countries). All proceeds go to the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation. Just have a few more questions to get answered from how the charity will get the proceeds and tax exemption status. I’m looking at sometime next week.
