this flippin kills me … Tony had a TweeterX OT on it the other day, but Mahomes actually DOES have a “Super Bowl Routine”

let that sink in for a minute …

“I think the biggest way I’ve changed,” Mahomes said this week, reflecting on his first Super Bowl appearance four years ago, “is kind of knowing what to expect. I’ve grown obviously as a quarterback and as a leader and as a person, but being able to have a game plan for what the Super Bowl week entails — and prepare myself to not play the Super Bowl before the Super Bowl game — is something that I’m hoping that I can use to my advantage.”

I actually think the Faiders debacle helped him and the team refocus.

Can we please, here and now, stop with the phrase “let that sink in”? Next to “Thoughts and Prayers”, it is the worst phrase ever.
EVER.
Let that sink in

See? Terrible.

in my defense, I got it from Tony

I am, therefore, passing the buck on this one

and as we have Reid and Mahomes, the general theme of passing fits right it

you should pass on commenting

found some more

Chiefs’ X factorL’Jarius Sneed, CB
The Chiefs ranked fifth in DVOA against No. 1 receivers and allowed a league-low (opponent-adjusted) 49.4 yards per game to those receivers during the regular season, largely thanks to Sneed. Looking at DVOA for pass coverage based on catches allowed compared to all snaps in coverage, Sneed finished 15th among cornerbacks (minimum 300 coverage snaps) with a minus-22% DVOA allowed.
But what’s more impressive for this game is how Sneed has improved over the course of the season. In the first nine weeks, he allowed a minus-10% DVOA. In the next nine weeks, he allowed a minus-40% DVOA. And in the three playoff games, Sneed has allowed a minus-50% DVOA in coverage, which would have ranked second for the year.

Part of the reason Sneed is the X factor is that we don’t know whom the Chiefs consider to be the 49ers’ most important target. Will they put Sneed on Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel, or move him between the two? The receiver Sneed covers might be surprisingly quiet, and the one he does not might be surprisingly productive. — Schatz

Who wins the game?We asked 64 experts to weigh in on who will win. The Chiefs were picked by 49 of them (76.6%), while the 49ers claimed 15 votes (23.4%). The most common predicted final scores were 27-24 (picked by eight of our experts) and 27-21 (seven).

I’ll see your mire and raise you a few …

Brock Purdy was just a sophomore at Iowa State, slinging passes around the Big 12 with no idea that he would someday become “Mr. Irrelevant” in the NFL draft. Running back Christian McCaffrey was still on a losing team in Carolina that had just fired its head coach. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had just wrapped up his college career at Arizona State.

The Chiefs also have far more experience on the sideline. Andy Reid is coaching in his fifth Super Bowl, moving into a tie with Tom Landry for third in NFL history and trailing only Bill Belichick and Don Shula. His third win would tie him with Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs behind only Belichick and Chuck Noll.

His offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, has experience as a head coach having led the Chicago Bears to the playoffs. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo not only has head coaching experience but also championship experience with multiple franchises, winning a ring as Tom Coughlin’s coordinator with the New York Giants

yo hpwdy, AG … how be all y’all

coupla factoids

Travis Kelce will start his 22nd postseason game. Mahomes will start his 18th and defensive tackle Chris Jones his 16h, the trio of franchise cornerstones holding down the top three spots in Chiefs history.

Eight of the Chiefs’ offensive starters were on the team that beat Philadelphia for the championship last year in Arizona. Eight of their defensive starters, too. Harrison Butker is back to kick and Tommy Townsend is back to punt.

If you look at the active 53-man roster following conference championship weekend, the Chiefs had 66 combined Super Bowl appearances; the 49ers had 16. And the Kansas City contingent had 48 rings among them while the 49ers had just four.

the Chiefs are so experienced that safety Mike Edwards, left tackle Donovan Smith, wide receiver Justin Watson and backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert played against them for Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl in the 2020 season.
Wide receiver Richie James did likewise for — you guessed it — the 49ers when they lost to Kansas City in the 2019 season.

By starting his fourth Super Bowl, Mahomes will tie for the third most in NFL history for a quarterback behind Tom Brady and John Elway. The others with four include Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Peyton Manning and Jim Kelly. All of them are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame except Brady and he’ll there soon.

He particularly feasted on their zone coverage, averaging 15.1 yards per pass attempt against it, the highest rate by any quarterback in a game versus any team in the last four seasons including playoffs, among 1,430 quarterback games with at least 20 pass attempts against a team’s zone coverage. Sure their defensive coordinator at the time was current Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, but their scheme is still zone heavy under current DC Steve Wilks.
The 49ers have played zone defense on 79.7% of their defensive plays this this postseason, the second highest rate among the 14 teams, and they have been successful with it, allowing the lowest passer rating in zone this postseason (76.2).
No matter what Wilks throws at Mahomes, he’ll likely eventually beat their vaunted zone coverage and power the Chiefs to becoming the NFL’s first repeat Super Bowl champions since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots.

However, Purdy under pressure, when the blitz gets home or otherwise, is a different story. He was pressured on 39.5% of his dropbacks in the regular season, the eighth-highest rate in the NFL. Under pressure, Purdy threw seven interceptions in the regular season, tied for the fifth-most in the NFL
Enter Steve Spagnuolo’s Chiefs defense. Not only is Spagnuolo’s 2023 defense the best of his Kansas City tenure, but it’s the best Chiefs defense of the 21st century. Including the postseason, they rank second in the league in scoring defense (16.8 PPG allowed), fourth in total defense (294.7 total YPG allowed) and first in sack rate (8.6%).

The Chiefs blitzed 21 times total against the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills in the first two rounds of the postseason, but then they cranked it up against 2023 First-Team All-Pro quarterback Lamar Jackson with 20 blitzes against the Ravens. All 20 were unique blitzes, meaning each was different based on who blitzed, from where and with what coverage behind it, according to CBS Sports Research.

rapidly becoming on a tier with the best in the game, smart dude and never gets rattled … not the pure huge athlete that Josh Allen is, but closer to Mahomes than one would think for just his second year in … game manager? more than that: he CAN make things happen and stretch out plays

I chuckled. I guess this is what it’s like to be the bad guys now.
