Game Summary

1st Quarter

For the 2nd week in a row the Chiefs would clinch the division with a win, but this time they could back into it with a Broncos loss regardless. The defense took the field first, and while they looked sharp to force a quick 3rd and 8 Browning managed to scramble and barely pick up the 1st down despite taking a big hit. Browning continued to drive the Bengals down the field mostly with his legs, But on a later 3rd and 7 he made a nice play to slow down Sneed on the bliitz with a ump fake, giving Higgins time to get open for a 19 yard gain. After that the defense held, mostly thanks to Omenihu batted down a screen pass, forcing the Bengals to settle for a field goal and a 3-0 lead after a 8 and a half minute drive.

The Chiefs first drive started with Pacheco reminding us what we’ve been missing with a 9 yard run. After Rice took a short pass for 18 yards, Pacheco found a hole and ran for 35 yards down to the 10 (more yards than all the RBs combined for last week). A couple plays later on 3rd and goal from the 8 Pacheco finished off the drive, this time with a reception from Mahomes to make it 7-3.

The Bengals closed out the 1st quarter with Browning continuing to play well, most notably with a 24 yard pass to Ja’Marr Chase on 3rd down. A couple Mixon runs later and the quarter ended with the Bengals deep in Chiefs territory.

2nd Quarter

Browning took his hot streak into the 2nd quarter. He had a couple double-digit yard gain checkdowns to set up goal to go, then found Mixon short to finish off another long drive (6:29 this time) to take a 10-7 lead.

All season the Chiefs beat themselves, and that happened on the next drive on 3rd and 7 when Wanya Morris was little more than a turnstile to give up a strip sack that the Bengals recovered. On the ensuing Bengals drive things go chippy between Sneed and Chase, but on 3rd and 2 Browning made another great play to avoid pressure, then pulled a Mahomes-type play by faking like he was scrambling to draw up the defenders before passing it over their heads, setting up another goal-to-go. The defense stopped 2 plays, but Sneed got called for pass interference on 3rd down to set up 1st and goal on the 1. The defense stuffed them the first two plays, but on 3rd down Browning scrambled yet again and taking a big hit but got into the endzone to make it 17-7.

The offense redeemed itself early in the drive with back-to-back big plays. First Mahomes found Noah Gray over the middle for 16, then Pacheco took a screen, dodged defenders, and picked up 21 yards. Unfortunately the drive stalled after that, as on 3rd and 7 Mahomes barely missed Kelce. Butker made the 54 yard field goal to bring the score to 17-10.

The defense finally showed up on the next drive, forcing a 3-and-out thanks to a coverage sack credited to Wharton, then Bolton blowing up the screen to set up a 3rd and 11. Browning found Hudson but he dropped it, so the Chiefs got the ball back at the 2 minute warning with all 3 timeouts. Pacheco continued to be the best player on the field wasting no time breaking off a 37 yard run. The drive stalled however thanks once again to mistakes. On the next play Perine was confused on what to do, leading to a Creed Humphrey false start. Then a couple plays later after Mahomes had made it a reasonable 3rd and 3 MVS dropped a pass that he may have been able to run into the endzone. Instead the Chiefs settled for the 43 yard field goal to make it 17-13.

The Bengals got the ball with 35 seconds and 1 timeout, so they just tried to run it out. But the Chiefs used their timeouts, forcing the Bengals to pick up a 1st down on the ground. That gave Cincinnati confidence as they decided to call their last timeout with 20 seconds left. But Sneed sucked that confidence away by knocking down a pass intended for Chase, and the Bengals went back on the ground to end the 1st half.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball first but did nothing with it, as on 3rd and 8 Mahomes barely overthrew Watson and Townsend had to come out after just 3 plays. The Bengals put together another nice drive, mostly thanks to two 14 yard pass plays in 3 tries to Hudson and Chase. Then on 3rd and 9 Joshua Williams got called for a 30 yard pass interference pentaly to set the Bengals up in the redzone. But the defense held, including on 4th down when Willie Gay blew up the play, so Cincinnati ended up with no points despite having the ball inside the 10.

The Chiefs wanted to give MVS confidence by giving him a deep pass, but it was a little overthrown and he failed to make the diving catch. But it didn’t matter much as a couple plays later Mahomes found Watson for 41 yards. A coouple rough plays later Mahomes found Rice who ran for the gain of 24. The Chiefs also got the ball inside the 10, but the Bengals pressure forced quick passes and Butker was forced to come out and make the 27 yard field goal to bring the score to 17-16.

Cincinnati started with a big play on their next drive, throwing a screen to Brown who broke the tackle of seemingly every Chief on the field to gain 19, but that’s all the Bengals could do and a couple plays later they punted. Richie James returned it from the endzone for some inexplicable reason and gave the offense the ball on the 9. A long field was no problem, as Mahomes found Rice on back-to-back plays, the first being for 11 to get out of the hole and the second being a huge deep pass that Rice took to the 11 before being tackled for a 67 yard gain. Pacheco gained 8 yards on the next two runs to take a 3rd and 3 on the 4 into the final quarter.

4th Quarter

Unfortunately the Bengals defense did a good job on the 3rd down, forcing Mahomes to check down to Pacheco who had no shot, so yet again Butker came out for a short 24 yard field goal, but it was enough to take a 19-17 lead.

Browning finally started to slow down as he had back-to-back completions on the way to a quick 3-and-out. The Chiefs were clearly wanting to burn some clock, so it was almost all Pacheco on their next drive. Mahomes did have time to find Kelce for 10, and he had a scramble where the refs flip-flopped on whether he got the 1st down before replay ruled him short, so he had to scramble and take a hit to convert the ensuing 4th and 1. Eventually the Bengals managed to stop Pacheco, so Butker came out and made his 5th field goal of the day to make the score 22-17

The defense showed themselves once again on the next drive, although they admittedly got a bit of help from the refs on an intentional grounding on the first play that was frankly a bad call. The Bengals couldn’t overcome the big loss and had another 3-and-out punt, which Richie James returned for 27 yards. The Chiefs also suffered a 3-and-out, although more on purpose to burn the clock (although Rice was close on 3rd down and went out of bounds to stop the clock), but because of the return Butker was able to make his 6th field goal (this one a 46 yarder) to make it 25-17.

Browning got the ball with 2:59 left and 3 timeouts needing 8 points to tie, and he started strong finding Hudson over the middle for a gain of 15. However after a 6 yard Mixon run and a sack on a perfectly timed Reid blitz it was 3rd and 12, which became 4th and 18 after another Reid sack. However Browning managed to find Boyd wide open over the middle for 23 yards. The next play was the 3rd sack of the drive, this time by an actual pass rusher in Karlaftis. And the play after that, this time thanks to Chris Jones making it 3rd and 27. Chris Jones got pressure again, but it just forced an incompletion to then make it 4th and 27. This time it fell incomplete, and the Chiefs won the game and the division!

Just got home. managed to watch the last 2 minutes at the daughters house. phew. a win! wish they could get more TD’s and less FG’s but still, better than what we’ve been doing.

Looks like Kelce didn’t have much action… did they really focus on bottling him up?

Yes. And we ran a formation several times where he was the lone receiving option on one side of the field.

I am calling it now – KC defeats Cleveland in the Conference Championship. Cleveland beats AFC South Champ and beats the Ravens who need to rest their team but will come out flat if they do. KC defeats whomever the # 6 seed might be, will win a road playoff game in either Buffalo or Miami, then return back to the Super Bowl at Arrowhead.

If we get #3 (we will), and Miami ends up at #2 (my guess they do), I see a very real chance that Mahomes STILL never plays a road game. I doubt Miami, but think they will manage to win next week. I doubt Playoff Jackson, so both being one-and-done is possible. As long as WE don’t go one-and-done, too. Otherwise, the #4 could host the AFCCG

I believe that we would host the Dolphins IF Buffalo beats Miami next week. IF Miami wins, not sure of who wins what tiebreaker – Texans, Colts, or Steelers – we would face one of those teams. Do not believe that we would face the Bills.

We could, but not if the Bills lose and the Steelers win.
EDIT: The only way to keep the Bills out is…Bills Lose + Steelers win + Jags Win. Without all 3 happening, then all sorts of stuff happen and they win the Division (Bills win), take 6th and play us (Bill lose + Jags lose + Steelers lose) or 7th (Bills lose + Steelers lose + Jags win) and play in Miami the following week.
If that happens… we would actually look to play the Bills AGAIN in the AFCCG…at Arrowhead.

Man Butker earned his paycheck today. We saw glimpses of the teams of old today. Promising, to be sure (tho MVS needs to go).

I love knocking both the Donks and Kittens out of the playoffs with one win. I love it.

Rest the starters next week. They need it.

Happy new year, Chiefs Kingdom!!!
