Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Chiefs kicked off to start the game, but the Bucs fumbled the return and it was the Chiefs who got the ball first in great field position, and on only the 2nd play of the game Mahomes found Kelce who leapt into the endzone to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead before even a minute had elapsed.

The Bucs didn’t fumble the next kickoff, and they also got a bik play on their 2nd play of the game as Fournette took a screen 25 yards into Chiefs territory. After another decent gain Karlaftis got a huge tackle for loss in the backfield, which set the Bucs back too much to overcome and they were forced to kick a 45 yard field goal to make it 7-3 Chiefs.

The Chiefs first real drive started with Mahomes running around before finding Kelce for 12 yards, then back-to-back screens (the 2nd one to Kelce) to set up the most difficult 3rd and short conversion ever requiring a classic Mahomes highlight to convert. The Chiefs continued to drive down the field, requiring a couple more 3rd down conversions, and eventually CEH scored a touchdown on a Wildcat to make it 14-3 Chiefs.

The 2nd Bucs drive was not nearly as easy as their 1st one, as they faced a 3rd and 12 after 2 plays and the checkdown was short of the marker, forcing a quick punt. The Chiefs started with an illegal formation on the first play of the drive, but it was no problem as it only took 2 plays to pick up the 15 yards, and an incompletion and an 8 yard Pacheco run later it was the end of the 1st quarter.

2nd Quarter

The Chiefs started the next quarter converting the 3rd and 2 with a Mahomes scramble, which followed up with a deep 32 yard pass to MVS. The next play Pacheco was a man possessed carrying 3 Buccaneers for an 8 yard gain. A couple plays later Mahomes had another insane highlight, dodging defenders in the backfield before flipping it to CEH for the touchdown, making it 21-3 Chiefs.

Brady decided he didn’t want Mahomes to show him up too much, as it only took 2 passes to get to the Chiefs 34 yard line. He did narrowly avoid a sack (probably should have been intentional ground), but that was a rare negative play on an otherwise easy drive that ended with a Mike Evans touchdown. 21-10 Chiefs.

The Chiefs were a bit conservative early on the next drive, with the biggest play being a horsecollar tackle for 15 yards, but it was effective as the Chiefs got deep into Tampa Bay territory without much issue. But eventually it led to a 4th and 1 which failed when CEH dropped a wide open pass. But Sneed made sure it was as if it never happened with a strip sack of Brady which Jones recovered. They got to the goalline quickly, but it took until 3rd down for Noah Gray to take the QB sneak for the touchdown, and it was 28-10.

There was only 2:11 left on the clock when the Bucs got the ball with 3 timeouts. They mostly dinked and dunked, but their tight end Brate got hurt by friendly fire, and as he limped off the field the Bucs snapped it too early and got a a too many men penalty. They did manage to convert that 3rd down and eventually get into field goal range. But they weren’t willing to settle for 3, as they continued to drive and a DPI put the ball on the 1 yard line, and Evans caught a touchdown to make it 28-17 Chiefs going into half.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the 2nd half and Skyy Moore got on the box score with a 15 yard reception on the first play. Around midfield a couple Mahomes incompletions created a 3rd and 10, but JuJu converted it easily on a 19 yard screen. But three plays later it was 4th down and the Chiefs were forced to test their new kicker with a 44 yard field goal attempt, which Wright nailed to make it 31-17.

Brady started the drive with a surprisingly athletic play to avoid a Fenton sack then converted the 1st down on the next play, but threw 3 incompletions in a row to force a bad punt that gave the Chiefs ball at the 35 yard line. They looked determined to burn some clock, lulling the Bucs into a false sense of security before getting MVS for a big 25 yard gain. A couple plays later a short pass to Moore went 16 yards to convert a 3rd and 5 and get down to the Tampa 5. Mahomes lost 5 yards on a sack on 1st down, but it was no problem as he found Jody Fortson for the touchdown, and it became 38-17 Chiefs.

The Bucs got the ball back in desperate circumstances being down 21 with 20 minutes left in the game, and after a couple plays Evans continued to shine against Jaylen Watson as he got a 15 yard reception despite being interfered with. Then a couple plays after that Jaylen Watson was a lowercase-g goat again as this time it was the tight end Kieft who caught a pass over him. The next play Thornhill got a controversial personal foul as he hit the defenseless Mike Evans in the back of the endzone. Then the play after that it was the other star receiver Godwin who got injured. The Bucs did get the touchdown though, and it was officially a shootout at 38-24.

The Chiefs ended the 3rd quarter with good field position once again, this time as the kickoff went out of bounds.

4th Quarter

The 4th quarter started with the Chiefs up 14 facing a 2nd and 5 on their own 45 looking to score, but also burn some clock. Noah Gray allowed a sack by completely wiffing on a blitz, but it was only 3rd and 4 after a Mahomes scramble and Mahomes found Kelce down the field for 22 yards to convert. 2 runs created a 3rd and 2, but it failed as MVS dropped a pass that hit him right on the numbers. But they kicked the field goal to make it a 3-score 41-24 lead with 10:47 left in the game.

The Bucs had mostly been depending on slow, time taking drives, but that wouldn’t cut it if they wanted to have a chance to come back. For some reason they continued with short passes, after a offensive pass interference and a hold they had burned over a minute and a half but weren’t even at the 30 and facing a 3rd and 26, and another short pass turned it into a 4th and 21, which for some reason they punted, meaning they had pretty much given up.

With 7:48 left in the game up 17 it was clock burning time for the Chiefs, which meant it was CEH time. He picked up a 1st down, but then on 3rd down the Chiefs decided to pass and Mahomes threw a pretty bad interception, which was returned to the Chiefs 34 with 4:42 left.

Suddenly with some minimal amount of hope, Tampa Bay didn’t really have a great sense of urgency as, while they did score a touchdown, they burned over a minute of game clock to do it. 41-31 Chiefs.

Now it was really time to burn clock. CEH got 8 yards on his first run, then was just short of the first down on the next run to bring up 3rd down, and converted it on the next run, pretty much putting the game on ice. 3 plays later it looked like he really put the game on ice with a 1st down run, but it was from a hold, so the Chiefs did have to punt, but the Bucs got the ball with only 45 seconds left and no timeouts, which was much too little to overcome a 10 point deficit.

Chiefs win!

That’s more like it! The D got carved up a bit too much for my liking though. Still a good momentum changing game though.

What he said. I’d argue that playing with the lead as often as he has actually has made this more impressive. Very few of his games were back-loaded with garbage time yards. Two future HoFers to catch his passes helped, but his really productive plays probably is actually less than the ones he played because he was being conservative and milking a lead.

The way Pacheco runs is , well, Jesus it is just violent. He just wants to anhilate whoever is front of him. I think that is behind is ”vision” issues, but the dynamic he brings to the table is too much to overlook

Also too lazy to look up the rest, but I know stat-wise, he’s pretty clearly the #1TE in the league so far this year.

Carried by the running game, threw a bad INT, threw a bunch a balls that were difficult to catch and that’s why they bounced off the receiver’s hands, should have stayed in the pocket on the TD pass to CEH. 51.3 Rating

Cris Collinsworth implied that there could be competition brewing between CEH and Pacheco. I don’t think that’s the case, personally. I think it’s more of a one-two punch in the backfield.

As I recall, Collinsworthless (notice him name-dropping himself?) owns PFF. There are some obvious implications here, but I can’t see them all.

CEHs best game. Even with the 4th down drop. Speaking of which I feel the need, the need for Sneed. Awesome game.

Cook got some playing time and made some plays. Chris Jones was his usual destructive self. Overall the defense wasn’t great but good enough against a tough team. Definitely helped that the offense made them one dimensional.

Gotta wonder what the game looks like without the opening kickoff fumble. Special teams was much improved this week, kudos all around.

As I’ve been saying, Tyreek like’s Tua’s pretty balls.

I’ve got Hill’s back over the previous bad press, but since he opened his mouth to cast shade…

Eh…it’s just like Brady making up bullshit to be mad. Reek has to justify to himself why he was ‘mad’ at the Chiefs. I got no beef.

The OL was on a mission tonight. If they can keep up that spirit, this is going to be a hard team to stop. There are still some interesting kinks in the passing game, but if you can run this efficiently, you’ll put up 35+ every game while you work the kinks out.
