Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Super Bowl 57 rematch began with the Chiefs on offense, which didn’t go very well as the 2nd play was a sack by Haason Reddick that was the biggest factor in a quick 3-and-out, and even the punt wasn’t very good so the Eagles got the ball just shy of midfield. The Eagles didn’t fare much better though as they had a run-run-sack 3-and-out (McDuffie got the sack on the blitz).

The next drive Reid decided to give Pacheco the rock and he rewarded him with a 24 yard run on the 2nd play. Then Toney got a carry up the middle and he actually got a big play as well for 14 yards. After a run and a screen it was 3rd and 7, so it was Mahomes’ turn again and he found Toney over the middle to barely pick up the 1st down (although to be honest I thought he was short). The next play Rice took a quick pass for 14 yards to make it 1st and goal from the 10. And after 2 runs Mahomes found Justin Watson wide open in the back of the endzone to make it 7-0 Chiefs

The Eagles offense responded by waking up as well, as the first play was a 20 yard pass after a Chiefs blitz failed to hit. The Eagles the proceeded to matriculate their way down the field with a series of good but not huge plays. They finally got another big play when Swift ran for 17 yards down to the Chiefs 4 yard line, and the next play took another run into the endzone (where the Eagles got away with a hold) to tie the game.

The Chiefs had time for just a single play (a run that went nowhere) before the 1st quarter came to an end.

2nd Quarter

After a short run the Chiefs faced a quick 3rd and 8 to start the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately Mahomes couldn’t find anybody and was stopped short on a scramble so they were forced to punt again. The Eagles did manage to pick up a 1st down, but then Hurts threw an interception right to Sneed to give the Chiefs the ball right back. Mahomes had a couple short scrambles to set up a 3rd and 4, on which Mahomes managed to fit a wobbly pass to Watson at midfield. They then proceeded to have a bit of their own matriculation, as they got down to the 26 without a play longer than 10 yards before CEH (yes he still exists) had a run of 12 around a beautifully blocked edge. But then in an echo of the Eagles last drive it was Mahomes who threw a brutal interception in the endzone to Kevin Byard and a promising drive came to a sudden end.

After a nice run to start the drive Chris Jones made an appearance with a big sack, eventually forcing a 3rd and 14, on which Chris Jones came around the edge and got his 2nd sack in 3 plays. And on the punt Kadarius “Eagle Killer” Toney made Eagles fans see flashbacks with a nice punt return to give the Chiefs the ball in Eagles territory. On a 3rd and 7 on the ensuing drive Kelce got blatantly interfered with but it wasn’t called, but offsides was a nice consolation to make it 3rd and 2, and Pacheco picked it up anyway with a 12 yard run. The next play was a spectacular scramble by Mahomes as the Eagles couldn’t bring him down and he ended up gaining 14 yards. Two runs (making Philly burn crucial timeouts as the half wound down) made it 3rd and 3 from the 4, and Mahomes found Kelce for an easy touchdown to make it 14-0.

The Eagles got the ball back with 1:45 left in the half and only one timeout. The first play was another McDuffie sack (he stripped the ball but unfortunately Hurts was aware enough to get it back) to set the Eagles way back. On the ensuing 3rd and 15 Chris Jones scared Hurts out of the pocket and Karlaftis took him down to get a sack and force the punt and now it was the Chiefs who had the ball, with only 54 seconds left and just a timeout but after another decent return by Toney on a shanked punt they had it on the Philly side of the field again. The first play was a false start on Jawaan Taylor. After a throwaway Watson had a brutal drop over the middle to make it 3rd and 15. But he redeemed himself the very next play with a 17 yard reception over the middle. Then Eagles DE Jalen Carter committed a penalty trying to get back on defense to give the Chiefs an extra 5 yards. McKinnon picked up another 4 yards on a checkdown to give Butker an opportunity from 43 yards away which he made to put the Chiefs up 17-7 at halftime.

3rd Quarter

In a mirror image of the Super Bowl, the Eagles got the ball to start the 2nd half looking to cut into a double digit deficit. But unlike the Super Bowl the Eagles did absolutely nothing, as Chris Jones stopped Hurts on a QB draw (which unfortunately for him doesn’t count as a sack since it was a designed run). Pacheco showed them how it was done on the first play with a 15 yard run. Trey Smith got called for a phantom hold to set the Chiefs back to a 1st and 20. A 8 yard CEH run and a 9 yard Mahomes scramble made it a manageable 3rd down, but Mahomes overthrew Kelce with a defender wrapped around his legs so the Chiefs also had to punt.

The defensive grind of the 3rd quarter continued, as after 2 plays it was 3rd and 1 for Philly, and for a reason I cannot even begin to explain they didn’t do the tush push, instead opting for a run 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage that got blown up before it even began. On the next play it was the Chiefs turn to go 3-and-out when Mahomes missed Watson deep on 3rd and 7.

The next drive the Eagles faced another quick 3rd and 1 put this time finally did the tush push which was unsurprisingly successful. The next play the Eagles finally got a big play as the defense looked confused on a reverse and Swift took advantage to gain 35 yards into the redzone. A couple plays later on 3rd and 5 and Hurts had nothing but green in front of him on a designed run to pull the Eagles to 17-14.

The Chiefs needed the offense to get going to avoid risking the game slipping away, and it started will with a 17 yard catch and run by Rashee Rice. Kelce got called for a hold the next play, but 2 plays after that Darius Slay gave the Chiefs the free 1st down by interfering with MVS. A couple more plays later on 3rd down the Eagles gave the Chiefs another free first down with a defensive hold. By the time the 3rd quarter came to an end, they were deep into Eagles territory.

4th Quarter

The final quarter started with the Chiefs facing a 2nd and 10 on the Philly 25. After two plays it was 4th and 1, and Reid decided to go for it, and Pacheco gained the needed yard up the middle. But the very next play Kelce fumbled after the short catch and the Chiefs turned it over in the redzone for the 2nd time in the game. The Chiefs defense almost got an interception on the first play when the ball got popped into the air and just a foot or two away from McDuffie’s waiting arms, but they were swarming and managed to force a quick 3-and-out and get the offense the ball back.

The up and down day for Watson continued on the next drive, as on a quick 3rd and 9 Mahomes found Watson over the shoulder deep for 17 yards for a good play. But another 2 plays later it was a down as he dropped a pass over the middle on a 3rd and 4 that forced a punt that netted just 19 yards after it bounced into the endzone.

McDuffie nearly had a pick-6 on the first play of the next drive as he perfectly played a screen. But 2nd time was the charm for the Eagles as the next play was a screen that Swift took for 20 yards. The Philly passing offense came alive as on 3rd and 5 a couple plays later the Philly passing offense had their first real good play when Hurts found Smith over the middle for 13, then the very next play he found Smith again for 41 yards one yard shy of the endzone. One tush push later and the Eagles took a 21-17 lead.

Now down for the first time in the game, the Chiefs offense was still sluggish. After a horrible false start call that should have been offsides it was 3rd and 12, and Mahomes’ pass to McKinnon was tipped and it was another punt. The defense continued to play well though as after a hold forced by Chris Jones the Eagles eventually faced a 3rd and 23, just slightly too far for a tush push and so they didn’t get it.

After a nice punt and coverage by Philly the Chiefs got the ball back with 2:49 left in the game with 2 timeouts needing a touchdown starting from their own 9. After two short passes it was 3rd and 2, which Kelce brutally dropped, but he made up for it by making the catch to pick up the first down. The next play Mahomes found Kelce again over the middle again for 13 yards, and we got a bonus 15 yards thanks to Fletcher Cox roughing Mahomes, getting the ball to midfield at the 2 minute warning. After a throwaway Mahomes found MVS deep for what would have been a touchdown but he dropped what was a perfect game winning pass. The next play was intentional grounding, making it 4th and 25, which fell incomplete and the Chiefs lost.

Last year at this time Veach was getting all the praise for his worst pick being a 2nd round wr. This year its the exact opposite. I know theres tome for the rookies but compared to the contributions last year its night and day.

Chances of our 2023 wrs being on the roster next year:
MVS: 5% he’d have to really ball out in the playoffs. Like Frank Clark level to come back.
Hardman:10% not sure why we brought him back
Skyy: 20% he’s officially in bust territory. But he’s still cheap. Id cut him tonight to pick up a flyer off a practice squad if it was up to me.
Watson: 30% he’s cheap.
Ross: TBD. If he doesnt get booted from the league he’ll probably stick around
Toney: 45% should beat out the other shrimpy gadget guys to stick around but who knows.
Rice: 100%

Honestly could see 3 to 4 new wrs next year.

MVS=0% We save $12m with his release

Moore=90% He may be demoted to WR5, but he is still on his rookie contract and should know the offense

Hardman= 20% Could be used in MVS role for a fraction of the price

Watson= 75% He is getting starter level snaps currently and is slotted to make peanuts next year

Ross=1% Might not be worth the hassle

Toney 100% Rookie deal and solid returner at least

Rice 100% Getting better every game

Does he know the offense though? I think Skyy Moore might be too stupid and not talented enough to play in the NFL.

Watson is on a one year contract so if he wants to come back for another 1 mill one year contract he’ll be back but we’ll see.

Solid returner who lost his job to Hardman.

MVS, Watson, Kelce, and Mahomes would all like at least one play back.

Kelce was 1 play, Watson was like 2-3, MVS was only good tonight when he drew the PI

And he didn’t even draw the PI. He was fortunate the ref threw the flag. He didn’t sell the contact at all.

That and the speed he showed getting to that ball (only to drop it). I said out loud “overthrow” while the ball was in the air and was surprised he got to the ball.

But hey, I’m always trying to look at any positive I can take away from things. Annoys the hell out of my girlfriend.

MVS played a shit game tonight.

You guys know how Ochocinco and TO always tease coming out of retirement every offseason?
I am not saying yes, but…

These guys that chart drops are always very generous to the WRs also. There’s a lot of what we would consider drops that they don’t count as drops.

We set a good tone for the offense in the 1st half and called plays to chew the clock and not lose in the 2nd half.
To me the most glaring problem in this game and other losses is going to the run to wind the clock down when we’re ahead.
The play calling is on Andy. When you start running the ball to grind the clock and playing to not lose the offense loses the momentum and you end up getting shut out in the 2nd half.
Andy needs to adjust his game.

Andy has always done it. I did an analysis years ago (pre-Mahomes) on Reid’s second halves. His teams always score poorly in second halves regardless of the half time score.

I think Mahomes has covered a lot of that in games we’ve been behind by doing it himself, but Reid failing to adjust in the second half is still there.

We dominated the game, except in the final score. Bad penalties, bad drops, bad turnovers did us in.

About the receivers – Glad to see that Toney got involved – using him in the backfield was a great idea. Watson with two very bad plays but he caught his fair share of balls. MVS – Hideous performance.

So on the topic of WRs, scouting, etc.

I know that teams generally will have area scouts, but is there then some process where there’s a person responsible for scouting position groups? Because if there is, the guy who scouts WRs needs to go.

EXACTLY. In my opinion, this is the 3rd game we have beat ourselves in. One catch or one non-turnover and things are a lot different.

This is not giving up on the team territory. It’s getting guys to catch the ball and making less dumb play calls. It ain’t over yet.

lets put this in perspective–
that was the best team in the NFC, a team that has just as much super bowl potential as anyine in the league, and it came down to us shooting ourselves in the foot repeatedlyand a couple of really shitty calls/non-calls for them to beat us by 4. this is still a very good football team that has found a real knack for underacheiving at critical times. thats fixable.

This. So much this. I’m not for moral victories, but it’s not full chicken little yet. We did good for a half, so that is an improvement. But we have a lot more to go than I would like.

yeah, Jalen Hurts was struggling so badly in the post game. The reporter asking stupid questions, you could see he wanted to say”look lady, we’ll take the win, but the Chiefs WRs let us off the hook repeatedly, particularly on the final drive by Mahomes, were you not watching?”

Reid better start lighting a fire under his receivers asses. No more Mr. Nice Coach. Make them drill until their hands are sore. Then do it again.

Start? Start was weeks ago. He needs to have their bags packed by the door like you would a cheating spouse. That probably wouldn’t even help. Maybe change their nameplates by their lockers. Suck 1. Suck 2. Suck 3…..
