Chiefs Somehow Win 27-24 Over Chargers Despite Struggles

A recap of the Chiefs Vs Chargers game

That was a rough one.

Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball first and started on the ground with 2 handoffs to CEH, and then a run by the fullback on 3rd and short. But after passing midfield a 4 yard loss on 3rd down meant the Chiefs questionably punted and was close to pinning the Chargers back but ended up being a touchback.

Herbert started out the game hot, as his first two passes went for a combined 24 yards. He got a bit less hot, needing a penalty to convert a 3rd down and short in Chiefs territory, then two plays later faced a 3rd and 13 that was a bit too much, and they settled for a field goal to make it 3-0 Chargers.

On the Chiefs next drive they finally gave Mahomes the chance to drop back and throw downfield, but the Chargers got through the line untouched to force a 3rd and 16, and Reid continued the conservative play calling with a screen that lost even more yards, and after a -11 yard drive the Chiefs punted again and gave the Chargers great field position.

The Chargers tried a trick play on their 2nd play of their next drive but Willie Gay sniffed it out for a loss forcing a 3rd down, which eventually became a 4th and inches, which LA converted with a QB sneak. A couple plays later Herbert threw it deep to Mike Williams who caught it through interference to set up a 1st and 1 on the goal line. L’Jarius Sneed made a big stop to end the 1st Quarter.

2nd Quarter

Herbert wasted no time scoring a touchdown on an easy pass from Herbert to the wide open fullback. 10-0 Chargers.

Apparently the Chiefs realized they were actually supposed to be playing a game, as Mahomes found Hardman for 30 yards on the first play. Two plays later Mahomes appeared to throw an interception but was actually a defensive hold to convert a 3rd down for the Chiefs instead. Two more plays later was another 3rd down, and again the Chargers committed a penalty. This time it was offsides, and Mahomes used the opportunity to find Kelce for 19 yards. The next play was a Mahomes classic side arm on the run to McKinnon for the touchdown, and the new kicker made his first kick. 10-7 Chiefs.

The new kicker somehow got a delay of game on the kickoff, which gave the Chargers favorable field position again. Other than a nice catch from Mike Williams, the Chargers mainly relied on the ground game to move past midfield, but after an incomplete pass the Chargers faced a 4th and 2 and shockingly punted.

The next drive saw a couple completions from Mahomes, but then 3 straight run plays failed to gain 10 yards and the Chiefs were forced to punt yet again.

The Chargers got the ball with 5 minutes left in the half, and marched the ball down the field with relative ease, not seeing a 3rd down until they were in Chiefs territory, which turned into a 4th down and punted again in a situation where they probably should have gone for it.

The Chiefs got the ball on their own 13 with 53 seconds and all 3 timeouts. The first play was a hold that looked more like a roughing the passer to my totally unbiased eye. That 17 yards was too much and the Chiefs went 3 and out, punting the ball away. But Townsend’s punt was a beauty, so the Chargers decided to knee out the half.

3rd Quarter

Los Angeles got the ball to start the 2nd half mysteriously missing their starting center, but didn’t seem to miss him as Ekeler had back-to-back big plays to get into Chiefs territory yet again, then Herbert found Mike Williams for another big gain. 3 plays later they faced a 4th and short, but this time they went for it and got the first down. The next play Mike Williams made another spectacular catch for a touchdown, and the Chargers went up 17-7.

Mahomes’ first play of the 2nd half was a deep attempt to Hardman that would have been a pick if it wasn’t for pass interference, but there was also holding so the Chiefs didn’t get the yards. Also Hardman got hurt to add injury to insult. The next play was also almost an interception as Kelce and Mahomes weren’t on the same page, this time getting bailed out by a flat drop by the defender.

But after those hiccups Mahomes started heating up, including a pass to CEH who broke some tackles for 21 yards. A couple plays later he found Justin Watson deep for a big 41 yard touchdown. 17-14 Chargers.

The defense heated up as well, as it only took 3 plays until the Chargers’ punter was on the field thanks in part by a Justin Reid pass breakup on 3rd down (he does more than kick!). But the Chiefs also were forced to punt after 3 plays, as the pass rush got to Mahomes immediately and forced an incompletion on 3rd and short.

The Chargers got it back, and after two tipped passes and a Chris Jones sack and it was another 3-and-out, this time the Chiefs getting the ball on the Los Angeles side of the field. Mahomes took advantage of the short field and got the team down to the 3 yard line in 4 plays, the 4th being a pass to Kelce that it looked like he fumbled after being body slammed.

But the 3rd quarter ended with the Chiefs struggling to pick up those 3 yards, and it was 4th and 1 going into the final frame.

4th Quarter

Despite the math, the conservative 4th down play calling from both sides continued as the Chiefs decided to kick the field goal and tie it at 17-17.

On the kickoff rookie Bryan Cook gave the Chargers great field position after hitting a Charger for some unknown reason. They took advantage by dinking and dunking down the field. One of those dunks was a short pass that went all the way down to the 7. But It was the Chiefs who scored the touchdown with Herbert throwing a pick-6 to 7th round rookie Jaylen Watson to give the Chiefs a 24-17 lead.

Now the Chargers must have been feeling a bit of desperation as they saw their lead slip away despite outplaying the Chiefs most of the night, but Chris Jones came up big again on 3rd down tackling Ekeler for a loss and forcing a 3-and-out. But Bryan Cook committed yet another special teams penalty, this time blocking out of bounds, so the Chiefs got the ball on the 15.

CEH got the focus early in the drive as the Chiefs aimed to burn clock. But then two incomplete passes not only failed to burn clock, but also forced a 4th down and a punt. Herbert converted a clutch 3rd and 2.

Herbert appeared to be hurt badly on the play, but was apparently fine as Chase Daniel only got one play. But then the next play got hit again and came up limping and almost threw another interception on 3rd down.

There was 3:55 left on the clock when the Chiefs got the ball, probably intending to burn as much time as possible. CEH had other ideas as he took the first handoff 52 yards, with a facemask adding another 15 yards on top to put the Chiefs immediately in the redzone. The offense only had three more plays, not wanting to be too aggressive on the verge of going up 2 scores, and Ammendola made another kick to make it 27-17.

Herbert came back into the game despite obviously hurting. He didn’t have to do much on the first play as an Ekeler screen went 21 yards after breaking the tackle of seemingly every Chief on the field. A couple plays later Herbert bizarrely tossed the ball away despite a clear lane for a 1st down, seemingly in so much pain he could barely do anything. But then on the very next play threw a beautiful pass to get within the 10.

They did manage to score the touchdown, but it took 4 plays and left only 1:11 in the game with a single timeout. They obviously went for the onside kick, which was unsuccessful and the Chiefs won a game they probably should have lost.

Okay takeaways from drunken rewatch of the game.

Defense:
Our zone defense still sucks.

Still need to be more nasty. Hit and ask questions later.

Chris Jones is a monster. Best defensive player we’ve had since Jared Allen or possibly DT.

Frank Clark is washed. It goes George, Dunlap, Danna, butker, amendola, andy reid and then frank clark. New quicker frank clark is just slow frank clark without size. I honestly think we may cut him before the seasons end.

I love Sneed. That Williams pass was ridiculous.

Chenel is getting some snaps but needs to stop thinking and act.

Fenton. Meh.

Need to be quicker on 3rd down. Too much walking around.

Offense.
Come on andy/eric better game planning.

I’m still on the fence with CEH. Big run but looked weird. I like protecting the ball but run dude, looked like a fb with 2 hands. The screen pass for 15 should have went for 50. The catch and bull over of James was sweet.

Can’t complain too much about the offensive line. At least one play from each guy I would want back but meh.

More watson less Hardman.

Special teams
Bootle come on man

Townsend. More consistency man. Bad punts, good punts

Amendola. Thank you. Nice job.

I expected more out of offense and less out of our defense.

Andy and Eric killed the first 2 drives IMO.

Spags played too much zone in the 1st quarter IMO.

But in the end. Pat finds away to score points and our D had Herbert rattled even before he got hurt. This D is a lot better than last year and our offense will be just fine.

You all may not appreciate this but Mahomes was even better in this game than his first. Sunday was fun slicing up the Cardinals but Mahomes was under pressure from a great defense, not all his weapons were firing, had a couple of throws almost picked but he was clutch when we needed it. His two TD passes were ones that not many quarterbacks could duplicate – especially the first. That angle was ridiculous. The second throw was perfect – against a great corner in good position while escaping the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. The true test of a quarterback – Mahomes, Montana – is how you do when the game gets ugly. Herbert – who played well – made the crucial error which turned the game for good.

This is not throwing shade at CEH but we are clearly not a run first team. I believe it was a mistake for us to start the game – whether he looked good or not – emphasizing the run. Quick passes to the receivers and Kelce can move the ball without exposing Patrick to the pass rush – mix in the run. ALSO Why did it seem like Fortson did not play until we got near the goal line? We seemed to want to spread the field rather than do some of the two and three TE sets we had last week.

If you have a superior gameplan, feel free to submit it to Reid, but I guarantee that whatever he takes away from it, he won’t follow it in the least. He’s one of the best ever, you aren’t even on that board.

My take is that they came out run-heavy to slow down the expected pass rush, and they emphasized it with a couple of successful screens, early on. That showed them that they couldn’t just pin their ears back and rush. We forced them to play disciplined, and were ultimately better at it. No stats, just wins.

The screens he succeeded on were anything but meh. You don’t throw those expecting 30 yards, and his average shows an important contribution. But hey, if you need a reason to sneer at him, I can’t stop you. That’s you having contempt for one of our teammates.

Tonight especially, CEH demonstrated why they drafted him. Given how covid’s stunted his development, plus the injury, this is the equivalent of his second season, and it shows. And while Hardman didn’t make every potential catch, he was money on some crucial plays.

Well, likely so, if you want to detract from a very good performance. Personally, I dislike that sort of nitpicking after a tough win, so I’ll focus on the positives, and let the coaches deal with the negatives. Tomorrow’s soon enough for cold analysis, but I may bask awhile. It’s a long week before our next game, and besides, there’s nobody better at making the best of a long delay between games.

We eked out a win against a very good team, but that’s cause for celebration, as we didn’t get any serious breaks via Fate. We hung in there until our chance came, and we never looked back. That’s what builds confidence that you’re never outmatched or out of any game, and the players feel that.

He’s an NFL caliber RB. Kind of like Sony Michel is. There’s just nothing special there. It was a good game. Which is a lot better than a bad game but his long run why almost a microcosm of his game. Clutching the ball like a fullback 15 yards downfield. I get it. Don’t fumble but it just seemed, I don’t know, not like a premier tailback

The original game plan went to shit due to three plays on three drives – the bad call to run Hardman, the sack on Mahomes, and the 3rd and one where the defender had a clean hit on Pacheco. You could see us improvising and tinkering until we started to get into a rhythm. Defense playing back in the first half and Spags becoming more aggressive as the game went on. Run defense was not up to par which made it all look worse. Notice that Watson settled in quickly at corner – not many passes thrown his way as the game went on. Fenton might be on the bench when McDuffie returns – Snead, Watson, and McD will probably be the starters as the season goes on.

With the way those ribs were hurting just sliding would be painful. Chargers fans are calling those hits dirty but those were textbook.

reminded me of the horrible RG3 game when Mike Shanahan sacrificed his career to try to get the win. But at least that was a playoff game as I remember

a rock fight is what I expected , I said KC 28 – 27 , Willie Gay had 2 huge misses. That tackle for Eckler 4 yards in the backfield and a near pick 6. He has real potential. I don’t get the love for Bolton. Very Very overrated.

He can be a bit abrasive (particularly with his political opinions), and his opinions of certain players go against the mainstream, but Saints has forgotten more about football than many of us here will ever know.

I usually put up the evening jam in the open threads then duck out. That’s right about the time I get off work, so by then I’m tired of looking at my computer for 10+ hours a day. I used to do a joke too, but that was only (an attempt) to keep traffic up during the off-season and by about mid-July they were starting to get stale.

Football is back, though, and with it the great writers of football content, to include discussions in comment threads. Which means I don’t need to do jokes again until March.

She looked Lebanese? She wasn’t super dark, but OMG she was so gorgeous. I don’t smoke cigarettes’, but she did. And that is another thing, women who smoke turn me on something fierce. Anyway, I actually bummed a smoke just so I could talk to her. She was really nice. But she was sooooooo hot!!

Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian… I find that they’re generally the best looking from the Middle East. I had a teacher from Syria one year and YOWZA.

Latinas too. Latinas are incredible.

She was Arab, but light skinned. Persians have more round faces and bigger noses (they are still hot BTW). Algerians, Egyptians, Arab peninsula tend to be more dark complicated

That’s very true. I studied a lot of Arabic, with Arabs from all over the world. I may be a little biased, but Syrian Arabic sounds very nice when women speak it (not as much for the guys, it sounds too sing-songy).

There’s some spoken Syrian in here – the woman is a Chaldean/Assyrian from Syria (not technically Arab as an ethnic identity, and in her case lacking the typical dark eyes), but this is an example of Syrian Arabic.

I also really like her voice, and unlike most Arabic pop music this isn’t auto-tuned drivel.

Syria played host to lots of ancient Roman ruins, particularly in and around Tadmur/Palmyra, before ISIS came through and blew a bunch of it up/sold it on the black market. Then came a number of other empires, culminating in the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Sykes-Picot Agreement, where the UK got Jordan/the Holy Land and France got Lebanon and Syria.

Personally I’ve always wanted to see Petra, in Jordan. Ancient city of the Nabataean civilization.

They say that Wadi Rum/Ram (depending on how it’s transliterated) has among the greatest views of the stars.

Lots of people who tour Petra don’t see anything besides al-Khazneh (the storehouse) or ad-Deir (the monastery), but there is so much more to it than that.

That’s the one in the Ka’aba in Saudi Arabia, I believe. The one in the Dome of the Rock is (according to Islam) the last place Muhammad stepped before Allah took him to heaven.

I would definitely like to go to Makkah and Madinah, though, to photograph the Masjid-al-Haram and the Masjid-an-Nabawi (the two holiest mosques in Islam), but alas, they don’t allow non-Muslims to visit those two cities generally.

Dome of the rock is the golden dome in Israel. That is where Ibrahim sacrificed Ishtmael , his arab son from Hagar and God saved him. The Ka’ba stone in mecca is where Abaraham and Ishtmael built a temple to pray to god. This was overrun and taken over by many tribes until Mohamed and his tribe the Q’resh reclaimed it in 680? (I am terrible with dates) and made it the center of Islam

You could be right. I thought that the Dome also had the rock from which Islam teaches that Muhammad was taken up into heaven, but I may be mistaken. I do know that Masjid-al-Aqsa (Arabic name of the Dome of the Rock) was the first qibla in Islam – the qibla being the direction that Muslims face during the prescribed prayers.
Admittedly my knowledge of Islamic history is sketchy at best, despite having befriended many Muslims over the last 16 years.

The actual Dome was placed where Issac or Isthmael was put up for sacraficed. But yes , Mohammed was put there after he road his Barroach in a dream where he met the prophets and they gave him wisdom to defeat his enemies

he is a good contact tackler, meaning, he is good intitiating contact, drags down the ball carrier. He doesn’t drive through the ball carrier and explode him backward

Bolton absolutely NOT overrated. 10 tackles tonight and I think the Chargers had to account for him.

Gay missed at least a couple tackles and INT’s, but still led the team in tackles with 11.
