Game Summary

1st Quarter

The road to Super Bowl 58 began with Lamar and the Ravens getting the ball first, but despite all the pregame hype for him it was the Chiefs defense who impressed early, forcing a very quick 3 and out. The Ravens did have a nice punt though, putting the Chiefs on the 14 to start. The Chiefs put together a much better drive, at one point having 3 10-yard gains in a row (Mahomes pass to Pacheco on a actual real route for 10, a screen to Rice for 11, and Pacheco getting skinny through the line to get 12). They faced a 4th and 2 a couple plays later, but Mahomes found Kelce who made the nice catch for 13. And after a defensive hold, Mahomes found Kelce again on the ground for the 19 yard touchdown to make it 7-0 Chiefs.

For a moment Baltimore’s next drive looked like it’d be another 3-and-out when Tranquill stop Hill for no gain on 3rd and 1, that arguably should have been longer due to an uncalled potential intentional grounding. But the Ravens were aggressive and the Lamar sneak on 4th down went for 21 yards. They continued with the ground game with a 15 yard run by Edwards on the next play. The next play after that was a spectacular one by Lamar as he dodged Chenal who had him dead to rights in the backfield, then found Flowers wide open down the sideline for the 30 yard touchdown to tie the game at 7.

The Chiefs closed out the 1st quarter by putting together another nice drive. On the 2nd play Mahomes found Rice for 10, and after a 2 yard loss by Pacheco and then an 11 yard scramble where Mahomes took an uncalled late hit, he then found Kelce after a high lob over a defender for 6. A couple plays later on 3rd and 4 Mahomes found Rice for 9, and the quarter ended with the Chiefs deep in Ravens territory.

2nd Quarter

A couple plays into the Quarter the Chiefs found themselves facing a 3rd and 5. Mahomes seemingly couldn’t find anybody as he ran around in the pocket for what seemed like an hour, but eventually was forced to toss it in Kelce’s general direction, but Kelce dove to make the spectacular catch for 10 to convert. A couple more plays later it was 3rd and 3, which Mahomes converted with a 4 yard run to make it goal to go from the 6. It took Pacheco two runs to gain the necessary yards, and the Chiefs retook a 14-7 lead.

The Ravens started decently on the next drive, converting a 3rd and 1. But the next play Lamar had no idea Omenihu was coming and the strip sack was recovered by Karlaftis, giving the Chiefs the ball on the Baltimore 33. The Chiefs Managed to move the ball down the field a bit, but on 3rd and 9 the refs called Kelce just short of the line to gain (ironically on the catch that gave him the playoffs receiving record over Jerry Rice), and Pacheco couldn’t pick up the couple of inches, so the Ravens managed to dodge the bullet.

Lamar Jackson gave Chiefs fans painful flashbacks as on the 2nd play his pass got batted high in the air, but he made the high effort play of running downfield to grab it and completed the pass to himself for 13 yards. That’s all the Ravens managed to do, as Chris Jones had two big plays to shut down the drive and force the punt. But unfortunately the Chiefs offense had their worst drive of the game, gaining no yards on 3 plays and they too were forced to punt, which wasn’t a good one giving the Ravens the ball on their own 41.

The Chiefs defense continued playing well, although it was mostly Lamar missing passes that lead to the 3-and-out, giving the Chiefs the ball on their own 11 with 1:46 left with all 3 timeouts that was bookended by penalties. At the beginning it was the Ravens giving the Chiefs 30 free yards on 2 unnecessary roughness calls in the first 3 plays. The first was Van Noy bumping Kelce after the play was over, and the second was the Ravens defender smacking Mahomes in the face. The biggest actual gain was when Mahomes found a wide open Kelce for 21. But then it was the Chiefs’ turn for penalties, as a 3rd and 4 turned into 3rd and 24 thanks to back-to-back questionable hold calls on Trey Smith, with the 2nd one being both more questionable and bringing back a brilliant Rice touchdown schemed by Reid. But Kelce got a couple yards to give Butker the opportunity from 52 yards, which he nailed to make the halftime score 17-7.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the 2nd half with a chance to put their foot on the throat of the Ravens. Instead they only ran 3 plays before being forced to punt. But then the defense stepped up and forced a 3-and-out, with the Ravens being lucky that Bolton let an interception go right through his hands, and the Chiefs got the ball back with another chance to build a big lead. They managed to drive down the field a little bit, mostly thanks to a 16 yard slant pass to Watson. But thanks to a holding call on Jawaan Taylor they faced a 3rd and 15 close to midfield, but the screen to Pacheco went backwards and they were forced to punt again.

The Ravens responded by putting together a scary drive with numerous double-digit yard plays. A checkdown to Edwards went for 16, then Lamar scrambled for 11. After Lamar escaped another sack to throw it away he had another checkdown go for 11 yards. But eventually Chris Jones forced a holding penalty, and on the ensuing 3rd and 9 a blitzing Reid finally got a sack and the Ravens were forced to punt.

The Ravens finished the 3rd quarter hot. On defense they completely shut down the Chiefs offense, forcing an easy 3-and-out. Then the very next play Lamar found a wide open Flowers deep for 54 yards (although a Flowers taunt reduced it by 15). Two plays later Flowers made it up by gaining 14 yards on the checkdown. The Chiefs almost recovered a fumble but the play was whistled dead right before, and the 3rd quarter came to an end.

4th Quarter

The first play of the 4th quarter the Chiefs got a massive break, as Flowers fumbled as he was diving into the endzone, and the Chiefs recovered for the touchback and maintaining the 10 point lead.

The Chiefs needed to do something on offense, even just burning some clock, to help the defense out. They did that bare minimum as on a quick 3rd and 7 Mahomes found Kelce for 14. A couple plays later the Ravens suffered another roughing call as the defender launched his helmet at Mahomes. Unfortunately the next play Thuney’s absense was felt as Allegretti gave up a quick 9 yard sack, and the Chiefs couldn’t recover. However, They burned 4 minutes and Townsend finally had a clutch punt pinning the Ravens on the 1 yard line.

This would be the legacy defining drive for Lamar. On the 2nd play he got the Ravens some space with a 10 yard pass to Likely. A couple plays later on 3rd and 1 Lamar held the ball forever and tried to escape, but he was eventually chased down by Wharton to make it 4th and 3, but Lamar found Beckham wide open for 6 to convert. A couple plays later Lamar found Aghalor deep for 39 yards, giving the Ravens life. But that life was snatched away as Lamar threw a brutal interception to Deon Bush in the endzone.

With under 7 minutes left the Chiefs needed to waste time more than anything, and the offense looked like it. They went 3-and-out with conservative play calling, but burned 1:45 and forced a Ravens timeout. Unfortunately the Ravens got a good return, starting on their own 46. The Ravens were able to drive down the field, partially thanks to the Chiefs playing prevent to burn clock. Karlaftis got a quick sack on the 1st play, on on the ensuing 3rd and 6 Lamar found Hill for the checkdown over the middle to convert (although he almost dropped it). They gained more yards, but also burned clock, but on a 3rd and 5 Lamar was forced to throw it away, forcing the field goal to make it 17-10

The Chiefs got it back with 2:34 left on the clock and the Ravens having 2 timeouts. Pacheco gained 8 yards on the first run despite the Ravens having 12 men on the field, with the Chiefs accepting the penalty to get another down. Then Roquan Smith went offsides went offsides on purpose to make it 1st and 10 again (although it was called unnecessary roughness to make it 15). Two Pacheco runs went a combined 1 yard, forcing a 3rd and 9, and MVS, who was maligned all season, caught the huge 32 yard pass down the field to all but put the game on ice. Chiefs win and go to the Super Bowl yet again!

“Taylor swift sideshow,an absolute fruit cake of a brother and even crazier wife, bad receivers cept for rice and kelce, matt nagy being involved in the offense. Kermit overcome a lot this season, heck of a player.”

“Andy Reid and Mahomes is a match made in football heaven.”

Gosh, they said such nice things that I didn’t even ask them to make sure the Home locker room is cleaned up for us.

Wouldn’t put it past the Raiders to leave us nasty surprises in the locker room just to spite us.

Sometimes he’s crazy fun. Often on the field he’s crazy good.

Either way, there’s always a little crazy to Travis Kelce. In a good way.

As long as yours isn’t a parody of a grossly underrated tune by AC/DC I think we’ll be in good shape.

Nope. You’re good.

(So far, I’ve been able to avoid AC/DC because I just don’t like them. I think their lead singer is hard for my ears to listen to. You’re welcome to have the parody market for every AC/DC song as far as I’m concerned.)

So, I posted my usual post on Twitter announcing that I have a song for the morning and asking who wants a tag… Right now, 67 people retweeted it and I have 212 tags for when I post it tomorrow. Most ever.

This is really cool as a song writer.

That Chiefs Offensive line was awesome today

those two holding penalties on Trey Smith looked like BS to me

Mahomes got sacked once

no penalties for snap count infractions at all

nice job holding your water in the noise Chiefs

All these NFL media types except Boomer Esiason should be ashamed at themselves. “Baltimore, Baltimore, Baltimore, KC has never seen a defense like this, blah blah blah.”

17-10, and the Ravens never led. Take that. GO CHIEFS!
