Game Summary

1st Quarter

One of the most highly anticipated Divisional game since the last time these teams met started with the Bills receiving the ball. The drive went backwards early as Kincaid was forced to commit an illegal bat penalty after Diggs fumbled near the sideline on the first play. It led to a 3rd and 17, on which the Bills got 16 yards when Allen lateralled (which was maybe forward but wasn’t challenged), then picked up the extra yard easily on a 4th down sneak. They continued to move down the field, with the most notable play being a tough 15 yard catch by Kincaid to convert a 3rd and 5. But the drive finally stalled close to the goal line, as the 3rd and 8 pass was batted by Chris Jones, and the Bills kicked the short field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.

Mahomes wasted little time putting up a highlight of his own, spinning out of pressure before finding Rice who ran for a 26 yard gain. The next play Mahomes found Kelce for a 14 yard gain. But the drive stalled when on 3rd and 5 Watson dropped a ball that hit him right on the chest, forcing Butker to make a 47 yard field goal in the wind to tie the game up at 3.

The Bills closed out the 1st quarter with a long drive that was mostly on the ground (although Allen did have 14 yards on a checkdown). The final play was an 8 yard scramble by Allen down to the 17, taking the 2nd and 2 into the 2nd quarter.

2nd Quarter

It didn’t take long for the Bills to finish off the drive. Cook had an impressive 7 yard run where he literally dragged Chris Jones along the ground, then Allen ran it in on a designed run to take a 10-3 lead.

Pacheco showed he can run the ball too, as he gained 19 yards on the first 2 plays. Then it was Mahomes’ turn, as he found Kelce for 29 yards, then a couple plays later on 3rd and 6 found Rice quickly for 8. But he missed Kelce and MVS, and a Hardman endaround went nowhere, so once again Butker came out and it was 10-6.

The Chiefs defense finally held, after giving up a 1st down on an 8 yard checkdown, but after that the drive went nowhere thanks largely to Watson making a nice play deep down the field, and the Bills had the first punt of the game. The Chiefs responded immediately with a drive of big plays. The first play was an 11 yard pass to Gray over the middle, then a couple plays later CEH had a huge 28 yard run, and 2 plays after that Mahomes found Kelce wide oen for a 22 yard touchdown to take a 13-10 lead.

The Bills responded with a nice drive of their own with 3:33 left on the clock. The first play was an 8 yard gain on a checkdown to Cook thanks to a nice block by Kincaid. A couple plays later Diggs made a nice catch on Bolton, then ran away from him for a 15 yard gain. Two plays later Allen looked to scramble but as he was getting tackled found Murray who picked up another 15. A couple more plays Allen picked up 15 yards on a scramble. On a 3rd and 5, Allen found Shakir who just picked up the 5, setting up 1st and goal from the 2. Allen powered through defenders on a designed run to easily get the touchdown and put the Bills back up 17-13. Richie James return to 36 gave the offense the ball with 20 seconds and a timeout. But the Chiefs got called for holding, so they took the knee and took that score into halftime.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs wasted little time to start the 2nd half, with Mahomes finding MVS who made a nice catch for 30 yards on the 1st play. Two plays later Mahomes put a defender in a spin cycle to scramble for 24 yards. Two more plays later a checkdown to Pacheco went 14 yards down to the 3, and the screen to Kelce was close but confirmed across the goal line on review to put the Chiefs back up 20-17.

A pattern was beginning to emerge as the Chiefs go down the field quickly, while the Bills matriculated the ball down the field. The Bills continued this pattern on their next drive as they didn’t have a gain of more than 8 yards until a Johnson run on 3rd and 2 went 16 yards down to the 6 yard line. The Bills went backwards to set up a 3rd and goal from the 13, but Allen found Shakir barely in the endzone and the Bills retook a 24-20 lead.

The 3rd quarter ended with the Chiefs continuing the pattern of the game. After a couple 6 yard gains Pacheco took a run 12 yards. Then 2 plays later Mahomes identified the blitz before the snap and used it to find MVS for 33 yards. A Pacheco 4 yard run later and we were in the final quarter of another Bills-Chiefs classic.

4th Quarter

It only took 2 plays in the 4th quarter to score, an 8 yard screen to Pacheco then Pacheco went the remaining 4 yards and got bent over backwards but got the touchdown to retake the lead 27-24.

Finally the defense stood up, as a great play by Tranquill to blow up the run in the backfield then Karlaftis deflecting the pass on 3rd down force a 4th and 5, and they tried the fake punt which failed, giving the Chiefs the ball on the Bills’ 33 yard line. Pacheco immediately took advantage by running it 30 yards down to the 3 yard line. The next play Hardman got it on the end around and fumbled it out of the back of the endzone, giving the Bills the ball right back.

The defense managed to hold again, with McDuffie tackling Cook in the backfield for a 4 yard loss then on 3rd and 12 Allen almost found Sherfield deep but as he dove he let the ball hit the ground. For a second it looked like the Chiefs would also stall as on 3rd down the Bills bumped Rice and caused him to not get to the ball, but the refs ruled it interference to continue the drive. But the drive only lasted another 3 plays as there were 2 incompletions, then Mahomes couldn’t find anybody and tried to scramble but it was hopeless.

The Bills were losing time to score points, and managed to put together another nice drive. The first play was almost a huge play to Diggs but the ball went right through his hands. Then they continued matriculating the ball down the field. On a 3rd and 10 Allen scrambled for 7 and fumbled, but despite the Chiefs getting hands on it the Bills eventually recovered, and on the ensuing 4th and 3 the nice play design got Shakir wide open to convert easily. But on the next 3rd and 9 Allen couldn’t find anybody and was forced to throw it away. Bass Missed the field goal, and the Chiefs took over with the lead and just 1:43 left on the clock.

The Bills had 2 timeouts, so the game wasn’t over, but it was close. Pacheco got a 8 yards on the 1st down, and the next play got the 3 to pick up the 1st down to seal the game. The Chiefs beat the Bills in the playoffs again to go to the AFC Championship Game!

Good chance we might be moving to a 3-4 after this season or might be seeing more 3-4 formations. We’ve been quitly cobbling together the players for it. We’ve been stashing players like Buggs and Farrell. We got some ILB types like Bolton, Tranquill, and Jones. We have everything we probably need and our DL coach is a 3-4 guy so we may see more 3-4 fronts soon.

Love how on the first Kelce TD, 3 defenders when to Noah Gray, and zero went with Kelce. I’m a big Noah fan boy, but even if say that was a bad idea.

I can’t WAIT to see how the viewing numbers were for this. I’m going out on a limb and saying more than 23M people watched.
That streaming game was trash. 6M more watched Hou/Cle than KC/Mia? And they crowed about it? Really?

You had to know someone out there would be trying to smear Mahomes for being so great.

and some are “sick” of having a near-bottom-of-the-round draft pick … well hey, we can get a #1 if we just suck badly enough, but who wants that?

I think that was a joke. More concerned with some ragging on players after a big win. Give it a day’s rest. Enjoy the moment

That was me, and clearly a joke.

I mean, sort of..it would be nice to somehow also have an early draft pick once in a while.

Our last really early pick was kind of underwhelming, and over a decade ago.

(No disrespect to Big Fish)

Our first road playoff win with Mahomes needs to be followed with his first win after beating the Bills in the playoffs.
2021: Lost SB
2022: Lost to Cincy
Luckily, Patrick is the demon killer. Take out the Ravens.

We need more than 1 NT on the active roster on gamedays. Pennell can’t do it alone.
