Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Chiefs started the game with the ball and effectively matriculated the ball into Bills teritory, looking good despite CEH and surprisingly Toney getting handoffs at RB, with Toney actually having the biggest play of the drive with a 14 yard run on a traditional handoff. Unfortunately Mahomes threw a pick to the defensive end Epenesa to end the drive. The good news is that the Bills couldn’t respond, who picked up a 1st down on the first play on a nice checkdown out of pressure by Josh Allen to gain 12 but otherwise couldn’t do anything and were forced to punt.

The next Kansas City drive managed to start strong as CEH had good back-to-back plays to turn a checkdown and a handoff into 20 combined yards. But the Chiefs looked out of sorts the next 3 plays, finishing with a sack on 3rd and 7, and the Bills got the ball back again, and again good field position after a poor Townsend punt. This time the defense couldn’t hold, as after a couple plays by Josh Allen to move the ball to the 25, he found Cook who was left wide open after the blitz to score the touchdown and go up 7-0.

The 3rd drive wasn’t any better than the first 2, as after the first 2 plays and a false start on MVS it was 3rd and 12, and after being forced to checkdown to McKinnon (who stood no chance) the Chiefs punted again. The Bills finished off the quarter with another nice draft. Although Reid almost got a pick on the first play, Buffalo recoverd with a 12 yard run by cook, then back-to-back runs by Ty Johnson that combined for 12. After a blitz by McDuffie forced Allen to throw it away, he found Cook wide open again for 27 as the defense ended the quarter wondering why they couldn’t cover him.

2nd Quarter

It looked like the defense might have started the next quarter by stiffening up, as they forced a quick 3rd and 6 that Allen failed to pick up on the scramble. But on the 4th and 1 Allen made a really nice play to delay Nick Bolton on the rush and give him just enough time to find Kincaid for the 1st down. Then after a 4 yard run Allen had a designed run that was initially stuffed, but he didn’t go down and his teammates pushed him into the endzone to put the Bills up 14-0.

The Chiefs needed to do something on the ensuing drive, and at first it seemed like it’d be a disaster as an offensive pass interference on Kelce and Richie James failing to make a catch while getting hit set up a 3rd and 18. But Mahomes and Kelce were Mahomes and Kelce as Mahomes lobbed it up and Kelce came down with to gain 23 yards and convert. The next play Mahomes found Justin Watson for another big play, this one for 18 yards. But after a CEH run that went backwards and a brutal drop that hit Toney right on the hands it was 3rd and 12, and this time Mahomes and MVS weren’t on the same page. They were on the Bills 39, but decided not to attempt the long field goal and punted instead.

The Bills had been living on good starting field position all game, but they had to start from their own 7 this time. They faced a quick 3rd and 1, but Murray converted it easily with a 4 yard run. After moving the ball a bit on some short pass, Karlaftis got a sack off a Chris Jones pressure that eventually led to a 3rd and 4, where Allen avoided pressure but found Chamarri Conner who plays for the Chiefs, who got the ball just shy of midfield.

There was les than 4 minutes left in the half, so the Chiefs were looking to make the score more respectable at half. It started well, with nice plays on a screen to Rice for 7, then a pass to Toney over the middle for 9, then a catch and run by Kelce for 12. But when the 2 minute warning was sandwiched by a Creed Humphrey hold and a Jawaan Taylor false start it was 1st and 25. But Rice picked up 17 yards on a slant and run to amke it managable, and after a checkdown to Toney made it 3rd and 2, Mahomes picked it up with a sideline pass to Richie James. Mahomes couldn’t connect with Rice in the endzone on the next play, but after picking up 6 on a checkdown McKinnon picked his way through the line to find the right holes to pick up the remaining 7 yards and bring the score to 14-7.

The Bills had 1:19 on the clock but had no timeouts, On the first play Allen dodged pressure again to find Kincaid for 5 but was tackled in bounds, and the Bills ran a quick play which resulted in an incompletion to Diggs to set up a 3rd and 5. Allen stepped up in the pocket to avoid Jones and pitched it to Dawson Knox to gain 13 and went out of bounds to stop the clock. Found Diggs over the middle for 9 yards which was reviewed and moved back from 10 yards which probably benefitted the Bills as it gave them a free timeout and a couple extra seconds. They ran a couple plays that gained a little bit, but it still would have been a 62 yard field goal attempt. The Bills decided a hail mary was a better option, and while it was knocked up almost right to Shakir Bolton managed to knock it down harmlessly to the ground.

3rd Quarter

Buffalo got the ball to start the 2nd half, and picked up a 12 yards on a pass to Knox. It was the Cook show on the next 4 plays, as he picked up a combined 35 yards on those 4 runs. The Bills remained hot as a screen to Shakir went for 12. But after Omenihu forced a holding penalty they eventually faced a 3rd and 7, which had no shot after Danna got a quick pressure. The Bills did manage to kick a field goal though, so it was 17-7.

The Chiefs desperately needed to put a good drive together, and that’s exactly what they did. The first play was a quick pass to MVS who took it 15 yards. Then Mahomes found Kelce while under pressure to get another 11. A couple plays later it was 3rd and 1, and McKinnon got the carry (CEH was on the sidelines with ripped pants) and picked it up easily on a 7 yard gain. The next play Mahomes found Kelce for an even bigger 22 yard gain. After a couple more plays it was 3rd and 3, and Mahomes found Rice in the back of the endzone to bring the game to 17-14.

The defense dominated on the next drive, as they forced a quick 3-and-out thanks to a pressure by Karlaftis on the 1st play and a nice defended pass by Sneed on 3rd and 3. The offense responded with picking up a tough 1st down, requiring a review after Kelce initially looked like he dropped a pass but review showed he was barely down. A couple plays later Mahomes found Rice, but he fumbled and handed the ball right back to Buffalo. Thankfully the defense forced another quick 3-and-out thanks in part to an uncalled defensive hold, but also due to McDuffie getting a sack on a well-timed blitz. And the 3rd quarter ended with the Bills needing to punt.

4th Quarter

The final quarter started with Richie James getting a huge punt return all the way out to the Chiefs 41. Reid showed confidence in Rice after the fumble by calling a screen to him that went for 15. after a short CEH run, Mahomes picked up the 1st with an 8 yard scramble. The next play was a beautiful screen to CEH who had nothing but grass and red jerseys in front of him for a 20 yard gain. But the drive stalled after that, including an incompletion on 3rd and 8 that was initially ruled a fumble as Mahomes tried to pull back a pass, but it was overturned to an incompletion on a quick review. Butker kicked the short field goal to tie the game at 17.

The Chiefs defense stepped up again forcing a quick 3rd and 9, which was the play of the game. On an absolute wild play, Josh Allen bought every millisecond he could before finding Murray wide open down the sideline who looked like he fumbled it, and the oblong spheroid did it’s thing bouncing from Chief, to Bill, to Chief, but ultimately ending up out of bounds. The replay in my mind (and the mind of a lot of Chiefs fans) clearly showed it was a drop but it was upheld on review. But the defense still held, as a couple holds and a Karlaftis pressure made it 3rd and 27, on which Omnehiu got the sack and finally forced the punt for real.

The next drive went nowhere for the Chiefs offense, as on 3rd and 7 Mahomes’ arm got hit and the ball just hit the ground. The Bills also faced a quick 3rd and 5, but Allen sttod in the pocket in the fac of pressure and found Deonte Harty for 25 yards. The Bills faced another 3rd down after 2 runs, this one a 3rd and 2, and again they picked it up, this time with a designed run by Josh Allen for 5. Another couple plays later it was 3rd and 10, Karlaftis got the sack but Jaylen Watson got called for the defensive hold and gave the Bills a free 1st down.

It looked like the Bills would be able to burn away the clock, but the Bills threw 2 incompletions to make it 3rd and 10 before the 2 minute warning. They only gained a yard on another wild play from Allen to dodge pressure. On the other side of the 2 minute warning they kicked the field goal to go up 20-17.

Mahomes got the ball with 1:54 on the clock and 2 timeouts, needing a field goal to tie or a touchdown to win. The first play Mahomes changed it before the snap after recognizing the blitz, allowing him to find MVS for a quick 7 yards. The next play was a spectacular catch by Rice for 19 yards through contact. After an incompletion Mahomes found Kelce deep, and turned it into what should have been the new play of the game as he lateralled it to Toney who then ran it in for the touchdown, but Toney was called for a super ticky tacky offsides and instead it was a penalty. After back-to-back incompletions it was 4th and 15, and Mahomes threw it to nobody and the Bills won.

The chiefs have only gone over 20 points in something like 2 of the last 5 games. how can you possibly expect them to have much success?

Well, I think I made a correct allocation of my time and attention this afternoon. SWMBO is happy that a bunch of niggling chores got done, blood pressure is normal and I am not feeling an overwhelming rage.
Having said that – I will be beyond disgusted if any of the WR coaching staff is on the team 1 day after the end of the season – which at this rate will be in very early January at best. Hopefully to be closely followed by whichever collection of total fuckwits employed the aforesaid wide non-receivers. Whoever pushed for Rice should be retained as the primary arbiter of WR selection. Ideally then replacing all of them not named Rice.

We may as well face reality – not only does our receiving corp suck, but the Nfl has decided that the ref;s would do everything they can do to make sure we lose.

Terrible call to make but not the reason we lost. We lost because our Offense has a turn over problem.

We overcame the turnover problem to be put in a position to win the game only for the refs to get involved.

Also on the Toney offside call, Rice was noticeably held for what could have been offsetting penalties.

Offseting doesnt mean it would have counted. Last year would 2nd and 15 in that situation seem insurmountable. Even after the penalty we basicslly needed 15 yards to have a chance to tie it. We got 0. Infuckingexcussble by this bad offense.

The really, really bad thing is it ISN’T exactly true what we are feeling. They CAN get out of those jams. Did it today once earlier in the game, then we won until the ref said otherwise.
Last week, we probably win, except we don’t get the blatantly obvious call.
I’m not even sure which game it was when on a 4th and 25, Mahomes hit the WR in the hands for a conversion, until he dropped it.
First one, we did it
Second one, We likely would have
Last one, we’ll never know because apparently right in the hands is the worst place to hit a WR.

That’s the most painful part. It is still possible and almost ALMOST happening

Every offensive offside call this year. 4 of them on WRs…surprised there’s been that many.

Only 3 last year, and 1 the year before.

In almost every scenario, the ref says something if the wr is that close. It’s a very soft foul to call without warning especially given the circumstances

I get that, but if convention is for the refs to ignore the first couple, warn the team that its going to be called after that, then start calling it and that convention was not followed, then they have a point.
This is, btw, the SAME complaint that the Chiefs had in the NE playoff game. Not that it was called, but that the accepted practice was not followed.

Yes, but this falls into the unwritten stuff, things that refs do with teams. Like umps who tell you they are calling the high strike early in the game and then come the 8th inning suddenly stop
Again, not defending Toney. He was offsides. More trying to give an alternate reasoning for Patrink melting down rather than he was yelling at teammates (which I can’t believe he would do. Not on the field.)

yeah…just more evidence of what has been going on all year; bottom-line imho is that gambling has ruined the sport (as I suspect it has done to other sports historically). The refs are influenced, either by involvement in the gambling in some form or are somehow threatened by those involved in the gambling. If it’s not at all related to the gambling scene, then it’s just personal in some way. There is no way they make that call and not the Von Miller call illustrated above. It isn’t like they saw one and not the other. They saw them both. The call was intentionally made on one and not the other. There’s really no reason to believe otherwise.

Optics are critical.
A bad call in 1975 was a bad call by an ignorant ref.
A bad call today is a bad call by an ignorant ref in the first 50 min of the game, but the fix is in in the last 10.

IMO, the NFL in particular and sports in general really stepped in it when they snuggled up to gambling.

There’s a pyramid complex south of Mexico City called Xochicalco (not to be confused with the more famous dirty lake in Mexico City with drinking boats on it called Xochimilco). Something that I found interesting about Xochicalco which is built near the top of a moderately high mountain concerns the game/sport that ancient Mexican tribes played by trying to get a ball through a hole carved into a projected rock without using their hands. Archeologists there have surmised that the upper class (royalty and priests) lived up on the top of the mountain near the pyramids and the game area(s). The lower classes lived further down with the lowest classes living below everyone else. They were expected to haul water from the distant lake below…and do the bidding of the upper classes (sounds familiar, no?). Anyway, the historians/archeologists believe the game was originally tied to their religion. The winner(s) of the games were rewarded with a promotion to deification via beheading and the head was used in the subsequent games. However, centuries later, the sacrificing of their children to bring rain that never came caused an upheaval in their systems. So, eventually the games were secularized as the religious ideology failed. They uncovered evidence of widespread gambling from that time-frame. They also uncovered evidence of a large fire in the upper residences. The entire society collapsed and the populace of the lower classes (whose residences show no sign of fire) apparently rose up to avenge their presumably long-felt inferior treatment. They were probably cheated in the gambling arena as well. And so…yeah…KT was offsides.

If someone told you that, if you take this guy in the 2nd rd, he will make a play that will be critical to you getting to the SB, but he will otherwise be a disappointment, you are going to say, Nah, I’m not taking him.
Jeez, the Rams sold their entire SEASON for one shot at the SB. We only spent a pick. We don’t win against Cincy without his punt return.
Yeah, it’s the past. At least I can see it. You are so damn blind by your “knowledge” of football and hatred for certain players that you can’t see the actual good that guys have done.

This team has mastered the art of self-destruction. Win or lose, it’s always spectacular to watch.

Broncos could win out.

I’m not confident we’ll win even 3 more game.

To be honest. I don’t think I even care.. this far in the season the teams sucks. They have actually gotten worse than the season started. A professional WR lining up off sides should simply not be a professional anymore.

The most dangerous WR in the league should be out of the league? Cause Tyreek does it all the time.
