Game Summary

1st Quarter

On the one hand the Chiefs were starting Blaine Gabbert supported by a bunch of backups. On the other hand the Chargers were starting a guy named Stick but were playing starters. So it looked like it should be an even fight.

The first drive for the Chiefs went about as you’d expect with a quick 3-and-out, and the backups on defense allowed Stick to move the ball on them down to the 5. But on 3rd and goal Omenihu knocked the ball out of stick’s hands and Mike Edwards returned it 97 yards for the touchdown to put the Chiefs up 7-0.

The Chargers and Chiefs had similar drives, picking up a single first down before punting. The Chargers got theirs on a nice scramble by stick, and the Chiefs got theirs with a nice catch by Justyn Ross. The Chargers ran one more play and the 1st quarter came to an end.

2nd Quarter

The 2nd quarter was mostly boring as the Chiefs and Chargers spent most of the quarter trading punt. However on the Chiefs 2nd drive of the quarter it suddenly got exciting when the Chiefs converted a 4th and 5 on a fake punt, then followed it up with a nice pass from Gabbert to Hardman for 37 yards. But the offense stalled on the goal line, and the Butker field goal made it 10-0 Chiefs.

The next drive Jaylen Watson was called for a 33 yard pass interference, which put the Chargers in field goal range. The defense otherwise held, so the Chargers kicked the field goal to make it 10-3. The Chiefs had an opportunity to get some points to end the half. Hardman had another nice play, making a catch that looked like it’d be an interception before running for a 14 yard gain, but a couple plays later Hardman and Gabbert weren’t on the same page leading to an interception. So it was the Chargers who put together a nice end of half drive, tacking on another field goal to make it 10-6 at halftime.

3rd Quarter

The 2nd half started with both teams trading punts. The Chargers had a big kickoff return to the 45 yard line, while the Chiefs had a 25 yard gain on a checkdown to Perine. But the Chargers 2nd drive of the half was the most exciting. They had multiple big plays to convert 3rd downs, the first was a 25 yard gain on a pass to Erickson, then later a 22 yard pass to Parham. But on the next 3rd down Chris Jones finally got the incentive sack he was chasing all game to force a field goal making it 10-9.

The Chiefs put together a nice drive, but it ultimately stalled just inside Charger territory and had to punt. LA run one play and it was the 4th quarter.

4th Quarter

The 4th quarter started with the Chiefs and Chargers both putting together drives that got close to midfield, but ultimately stalling there. But the Chargers’ 2nd drive was a long one where Stick led the Chargers with both his arm and leg, including a conversion on 4th and 8, all the way down to the goal line, but on 3rd down from the 1 yard line the defensive line blew up the play, so it was yet another field goal as the Chargers took a 12-10 lead.

The Chiefs got the ball back with 4 minutes left needing just a field goal to take back the lead. On 3rd and 7 old man Gabbert had a 26 yard scramble into Chargers territory, then a couple plays later scrambled again for 14 yards. A couple more runs rand down the clock under a minute and burned away the Chargers clock, setting up Butker for the 41 yard attempt that gave the Chiefs the 13-12 lead.

Stick had 49 minutes and no timeouts needing a field goal to win the game. Malik Herring got a huge sack on the first play, but the Chargers made it back on the next to make it 3rd and 3, and a deflection by Herring made it 4th and 3, which was incomplete and the Chiefs improbably won with their backups.

Several defenders had a solid game. That bodes well for the future.

Hmmmm – Ravens play backups and lose close game to Steelers, Niners play backups and lose close game to the Rams, Cleveland plays backups and gets blown out. Philly starts out with starters and gets whipped. AND the Chiefs play their backups and win a close game.

Spags has come a long way

it was said that this Chiefs D is damn mentally capable of learning his D

former players said that his D is tough to learn

he has 22 players that understand the scheme and play it at Super Bowl level

Barely saw any of the game because every stream I tried SUCKED. But a win is always good, especially when it’s mostly our backups against their starter (sans QB and top 2 WR).

Get those guys rested for next week against the Dolphins/Steelers!

Malik Herring really came alive at the end. Thompson has more burst than any of our other Defensive Ends.

Thompson is just light in his britches. They knew him and Felix were both redshirt players, but our DEs can be nasty next year even without Danna.

IF Thompson and FAU can continue to improve, both could have a major impact next season.
