Breaking News: Eric Bieniemy Makes Lateral Move To Become Washington’s Offensive Coordinator
29 repliesSources: The #Commanders and #Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy are finalizing a deal for him to be their new offensive coordinator. Ron Rivera’s first choice all along. Should be official tomorrow. https://t.co/f4WTR2AtDi

With the expected OC opening in Kansas City, Matt Nagy quickly emerges as the top choice to fill Eric Bieniemy's shoes after the #Chiefs complete their process. He's currently senior assistant and quarterbacks coach. https://t.co/95AJmrWEcq

For what seems like the millionth year in a row, a head coaching cycle came and went with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy getting interest, but ultimately failing to find a new job. This has been especially frustrating, and mystifying, as not only have his two predecessors in Kansas City gotten promotions, but he has been the offensive coordinator for one of the best offensive 5 year runs in NFL history. There is every reason why he should be a head coach right now.
But this move makes sense. It’s clear that he’ll never get a head coaching job the way things are going. For whatever reason this just isn’t building his resume enough. So to find a new offensive coordinator job elsewhere, and hopefully succeed there, can hopefully prove his coaching worth and allow him to finally get that long awaited promotion.
Wasn’t there a comp pick associated with hiring/having a “minority” as a HC or OC? Is that only the year of hiring? I presume so.
“Nagy” is a Hungarian surname…seems like a “minority” to me! (I’m pretty sure it’s mostly defined by skin color than anything else. Oh well…ya gotta try in order to have a chance to win!) 😂
And since I’m clueless about how any of this works as far as comp picks, do we possibly lose a comp pick by letting a minority OC walk? I presume not, but I don’t think logic and my sense of fairness applies much in this American-era of CRT and color-based justice.
Best of luck EB!! Thanks for the years as part of success here..
Guess it’s Naggy’s show now to stand under Andy’s shadow
do we get any comp picks for this?
Best question I’ve heard yet, i’m not sure being lateral.. that would be nice to add another pic or two…
The Uncertainty is Due to his Contract Being Expired IMHO … ; )
I doubt it, since as KCChef pointed out, his contract was expired, so actually he no longer worked for the Chiefs. We let him walk. It was a lateral move as well which might have played into a scenario wherein he was still under contract, although technically, this move may be more than a lateral move because he’s not only OC but he’s Assistant HC which I believe is an upgrade to his KC position. I suspect the Washington Football Team may get a comp pick for hiring a minority. Hope he does well there and is given the reins to the offense so we can finally find out just how good he really is as OC. It seems Reid’s shadow left some doubt, despite the fact that other OCs under Reid didn’t have such trouble getting hired as HC elsewhere.
I now hope we see the Commanders in the SB next year.
And kick their butts. But I hope their Offense looks solid.
I wish him luck and now I’m excited to see what our offense can after a little shake up. Hopefully we can get a little more explosive without Mahomes forgoing spreading the ball around.
Congrats EB, hope you do great things in DC!
That’s an awesome name ….
I always hate to break up what’s working, thanks for helping the chiefs become the team they are..and best of luck , and I hope you enjoyed your last super bowl …
Victory. He can get there. He just needs to lose to us.
Figured it was just a matter of time when he was only given a one year contract and they brought back Nagy
Well, thanks for everything, Bieniemy. Best of luck going forward.
“so long and thanks for all the fish!”
Well said, Hitchhiker

wtg EB!
hope your team wins every game (except the Super Bowl b/c … well … you know)
Assistant HC as well as OC? Methinks Ron is helping EB pad his resume a bit, but it does make sense in its own right. EB’s been working closely with Andy for years, so he isn’t unqualified, not to mention that bringing him in would be a bit of a refresher course in Andy’s style and philosophies. So both men benefit from the arrangement, making it feel much like the Smith trade to DC, save for KC getting picks in return.
according the EB’s agent, that’s the deal … definitely good for his resume (in theory)
Of course in theory, but you have to buy the theory before you can put it into practice.
and practice makes perfect … in theory 😉
No, perfect practice makes perfect, bad practices = bad results. 😉
got it … I’m now “with the program, Sam”
“Wanted him back”? I think “Would have taken him back” is more likely the case. It’s been time for him to move on for at least two seasons, but the NFL is stocked with idiots
Ron is a solid guy. Would not shock me if that’s the case.
I hope the Commanders run that division and make the playoffs. And this is the first time I can remember that I am actually pulling for DC.
The unfortunate thing is that I don’t think he’ll have enough of an impact on their offense to overcome their lack of QB talent, so it may not help his chances.
There’s only so much he can do but people will use it against him.
Beyond qb there’s talent there. Couple of top tier WRs, good RBs, a good TE. Not sure about their oline.
Maybe part of it was “who do you want as your QB?” THey aren’t sold on anyone, near as I can tell.
