The owners and players agreed to an opt-out mechanism in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances created by Covid 19 and of the perspective that there may be some things more important than football.

I could understand Dr Larry opting out to help out in the old folks’ home, but this is pretty weak.

He knew he was probably going to be cut, so he took the guaranteed $150k.

Well now that he’s came out and given the reason why (Mom’s stage IV cancer), I feel like an ass. My bad.

In a way I agree with you, but on the other hand if the guys opinion differs from mine then I’m not the guy to tell him he is wrong. More so I would just explain myself and respect his opinion. I respect the fact the he thinks its best for him and that is what he is doing.

I don’t get this line of thinking and almost everyone is doing it these days. I don’t have to respect anything. I can think an opinion is dumb and say as much. I could elaborate, sure, but it’s kind of pointless.

These players are at, literally, almost zero risk. There are plenty more things that could kill or injure someone than a healthy young male getting COVID. They’re taking precautions to not spread it on to others as well and will be heavily tested.

Maybe we shouldn’t have these guys driving to work either…or staying out past 2am.

Anybody remember when Kareem Hunt was the talented rookie that was going to backup Spencer Ware then due to unexpected events was the starter. Hunt got screwed out of some hardware he deserved that year, but the main thing I remember is he showed out as a fantastic RB. The only thing that could stop Hunt it turns out was Hunt.

Well it kinda feels like CEH is getting that same unexpected starting opportunity, and I think he is going to end up looking a lot like Hunt on the field. Hopefully not off of it.

As long as he doesn’t tryout for Kicker anytime soon, I think he’ll be good

Kicker on the field is ok. Off the field, not so much.

I guess we’re down to 18 of 22 starters returning.

Or a hybrid season, or an asterixed season, but yeah, we’ll see how it all plays out. Tony Sommer’s article on a bubble format using LA and SF as the centres for an isolated or bubbled environment is intriguing, maybe this would reduce the risk to team staff and players as well as to the general public. We’ll see how the NBA and the NHL do with their hybrid formats. I do believe this: disrespecting a player for opting out of this NFL season is uncalled for.

The Chiefs also cut 6 other players today and apparently signed a safety yesterday from Seattle

If a player opts out, is that it? Is there any chance of return at any point?

Like, what if a player opts out, then gets covid and recovers by October or November, would he be able to come back at all?

From what I understand, once you opt out, you can’t retract it.

Opting out can also occur later after the season starts too I think

I don’t believe it affects years after this, does it?

It would be more like Player A gets Covid and recovers 9 days later.

Im sure theres a valid reason for his decision but career wise this doesnt seem to be a headup move by him. IF there is a season now he will very much be out of a job at the end of it now.

agree

I wonder if we can trade his rights after he opts out?

I doubt we can this year, nor do I think the Chiefs would even consider it. But a season with CEH, other DWill, Thompson, and Washington getting to showcase themselves its gonna be very hard for him to come back and I dont think he’ll demand much value in a trade due to him being a HB

I’m glad. This is not the year for sports. It might not be great for us fans but it’s better than having a bunch of football players catch COVID and at worst die from it, but also potentially get a lifelong ailment. Could you imagine these guys catching COVID, recovering, and then dealing with lowered lung capacity or blood clots for the rest of their lives? No thanks.

I love the Chiefs and we’re as hot as we’ve ever been right now, but if a guy doesn’t want to put his family through the extra risk, then I have to respect that.

Yea I could imagine a lot of things happening to our best and favorite players but the likely hood of them even showing symptoms is very low. They have a higher chance of getting struck by lighting than Covid giving them lowered lung capacity or blood clots. I wish I could opt out of work and collect 300K in unemployment.

Well. Guess we’ll see more of CEH early than we thought. Also probably means that we keep all four of CEH, Darwin Thompson, Darrel Williams, and DeAndre Washington.
