810 Sports and Kevin Kietzman Agree to Part Ways After Fallout From Controversial Comments

Kevin Kietzman parts with 810 Sports.

News has just been confirmed that the host of Between The Lines on 810 Sports, Kevin Kietzman, has agreed to part ways with the station. This comes following the national fallout regarding comments he made about Kansas City’s Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s family life, notably the drug and legal issues surrounding his two sons, one of whom passed away from a heroin overdose.

https://twitter.com/SportsRadio810/status/1144702155472932864?s=20

The timing of Kietzman’s comments come at the tail end of an exhausting and dramatic offseason for the Chiefs that saw an entire overhaul of the defensive unit and the constant twists and turns of the Tyreek Hill investigation, which many believe to have largely been driven by the local media. In a bubble, he may have likely outlasted the outcry, but as is often the case his words were the straw to break the back of the camel that is the Chiefs fan base.

Its never pleasant to see someone lose their job, regardless of the circumstances. Arrowhead Guys understands the frustration and pain caused by his words and agree that removing him from the air was the correct decision. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

We will update this post if new information becomes available.

I don’t have the screenshot, but I still think it was Mahomes liking Riddick’s scathing tweet that scared the hell out of 810 more than anything else. Even Reid will probably be gone before Pat is. Hard to be a sports radio host in this town for the next 15 years if PMII won’t talk to you.

Ownership Reports and Related Materials (73.3526(e)(5), 73.3527(e)(4)) (retain until a new, complete ownership report is filed with the FCC). These reports are filed every other year, as well as in connection with the sale of a broadcast station. They reflect the entities and individuals that hold “attributable” interests in the broadcast station (that is, interests the Commission deems convey some influence over the station).

I’m waiting to see if a new report is submitted

Guy wanted to rouse up a torch and pitchfork crowd, so when he managed it he couldn’t believe they didn’t want to get the person he wanted fired, but him. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he’s still legitimately baffled why they got him fired, and convinced of his own “high moral standards”, innocence and victimhood. But he did get his just desserts.

I think the problem came to a head when he made those off air comments to sponsors that got leaked and his interview. He came across as completely insincere and the chiefs probably forced the issue.

I think it was on Twitter that I saw it (so it might not be as reliable as I send to remember). Essential he was quoted telling sponsors that this was only a social media issue so it was no big deal. I’ll continue to look for it, but Twitter is a mess. No promises.

Ah hah I found it (or at least him making a similar comment). It wasn’t to sponsors, but an email to Awful Announcing. No idea how credible these guys are. Here’s the link to the story and it’s at the end of the second email he sent them (quite a ways down the page).

But in case you don’t want to scroll through all of it here’s the direct quote as well.

Going from Twitter, people were complaining to his sponsors, and probably quite a few of them. Not my bag, but hurting others was part of his business model, and he was given second, third, fourth and probably more chances.

Meanwhile, despite what some are still saying, Hill remains on his second chance, seeing as how all the media chargers were baseless. My guess is that after the Chiefs rep, most likely a lawyer, left the Hill interview and went over the evidence, or listened as the respective parties they called back to 1 Arrowhead drive to report that Hill’s case that he was being railroaded was solid, at which point whoever at 1ADr. made a call to whoever at the 810 office and told them it was their Klown or their contract with the Chiefs, but they were going to lose one of them. Those who were calling 810’s sponsors no doubt upped the pressure, though.

“Mutually agreed to leave”: In the media world, this means….. Was told he has been given 2 choices:
1) Leave of his own recognizance, and have it reported that it was a mutual decision, and keep any accrued vacation and severance packages.
2) Be fired directly, have it reported that way, and lose any severance package due to being fired for cause.

And at least one guy who dislikes him has moved up to ESPN while KK remained in KC. I doubt that KK was happy about that turn of events – and if you’ve noticed, Kiezboi gets emotionally invested in his get’em! stories. That’s the problem when you keep saying the same thing over and over: it can start out as a pose, an acting job, but gradually it’ll come to be a belief, and then it will become your truth. And once a belief has become your truth, it can be extremely difficult to see anything that falsifies your truth as actually being true. Talk for ten minutes to any conspiracy theorist and you’ll begin to understand – if you go in free of the belief that anyone who believe in that crap to be of below-normal intelligence. They aren’t, you know, it’s that once they get invested in their belief, they start using more and more of their intelligence in building and defending their case, little by little.

That principle is one of the reason that when talking about the Hill case, I’ve been careful to base everything on my belief in innocent until proven guilty rather than “Hill is innocent, and I can prove it”. And the same sort of thinking I described above is why taking a guilty until proven innocent attitude will make you use your native intelligence to make yourself stupid, because it tends to always be applied to people you dislike, whether the reasons are valid or not.

I still hold to my unfounded theory that he never would’ve said those things if not for the frustration that resulted from his choosing a side in the Tyreek Hill issue way back when Hill was first drafted. And then not only seeing Hill stay out of trouble for such a long time, but having to watch the man he’d preemptively decided to hate have such stunning success on the football field. And then, this spring, to feel like his long-simmering outrage was finally about to be satiated, only to watch while Hill’s troubles have slowly faded from possibly being expelled from the league to possibly not even having to serve a suspension at all.

Kietzman is the perfect example of somebody who picked a rhetorical hill to die on. I don’t feel one damned bit sorry for him, because the side he chose is based entirely on impersonal hate for a man that he never knew.

I’d guess the “mutual understanding” went about like this:

KK – “YEP!”

Maybe, but I rather doubt it. That sort of weasel is good at looking out after his own skin, and prolly expected that laying low would result in him getting yet another chance after a while string of other chances. He’s the sort who would know that such a demand would force the issue.

Unless, of course, he was arrogant and desperate enough to believe that he could vindicate himself by getting Hill fired if he got back to the mic soon enough. Possible, but he’d have to be so far gone into his mindless hate to lose track of his own vulnerability. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It could have simply been a ratings thing as well.
Give the guy a few days off to see if it blows over, AND put someone else on the air in his place that they already thought might be a good host.
Now watch the ratings and social media comments and see what happens. No significant drop in listeners, or an increased positive social media buzz…or both… keep the ‘new guy’, but if the show’s ratings have a large measurable drop that results in more lost revenue than the controversy …. get the old guy back.

And it was a death much akin to the frog in the water pot. As time passed without anything bad happening to Hill, he got more and more invested in his position against him, a little at a time. Slowly enough that by the time the Hill scandal started to come apart in his increasing desperation to see the outcome he wanted for years evaporate, he had to push harder on what he had left and search for more ways to “get” him. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he didn’t realize how extreme he’d gotten by the time he lashed out at Reid as a way to get to Hill.

I expect that the interview was the last straw for him, and that when the Chiefs rep returned or phoned home, word came from the front office to 810 informing them that over the course of the proceeding KC had learned enough of the totality of the evidence to be confident that Hill hadn’t done anything seriously wrong, and he’d be playing in all or the majority of the season in KC and that contract talks would resume – and at least heavily implying that if KK the Klown ever attacked Hill again, the team would cut ties with the station. Speculation on my part, of course – but if there’d been any damning evidence against Hill, KK might still have a job.

Hopefully this creates space for some fresh, smart voices in KC. We’ve needed that since, well, since not long after Whitlock left town.

And hopefully this helps Kietzman get a fresh perspective on life, too. I don’t think it will, but, it’d be cool if it did.

Honestly, I was never happier than when Whit-less left town in KC.
He had the occasional hot take, but I grew tired of Whitlock consistently playing the race card as the majority of or at least a large part of every take.
His schtick seemed to be ‘race bating’ at every turn. He didn’t used to be that way, but that’s what he became in KC.
Now, out of KC, the guy seems to have returned to being a decent sports reporter. He still plays that card occasionally, but it’s not cards 1-45 of his 52 card deck anymore.

We’ve had a cycle of arrogant asses for a while in KC. Kietzman replaced Whitlock, who himself out-shock-jocked Don Fortune. Hopefully we have better luck with the next guy, since for a change the old ass wasn’t directly displaced by an even bigger ass.
