Wednesday Night O/T: Sammy Watkins hints at being willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Chiefs.

Welcome to AG’s nightly Open Thread, drop in and join a conversation, or start one yourself.

A small story that seemed to slip through the gaps, but the conventional wisdom that Watkins will be gone after 2020 might not be correct. Watkins hinted that he may be willing to take a paycut to stay with Reid and Mahomes, and if that’s the case the Chiefs should find a way to keep him around.

If UI benefits hadn’t come thru I’d be truley fucked, I’m less fucked for a few months now.
For the record my family could have used gov’t assistance more than once (single parent, medical shit etc.) and would not/did not qualify.
I shall suck this teat w/o apology.

Scared honestly. I venture out 1-2 times a week but my brother has been working the whole time and there’s been a confirmed case there (little contact with the dude) but he’s got issues that make him vulnerable.
And our governor is going to force schools to open full time next month, shit’s fuckin’ crazy.

but other than that ok I guess 🙂

Gotta steal this snippet from a Nate Taylor article, because I think it says a lot about St. Patrick.

The Chiefs studied Trout’s deal. Whenever the topic of an extension came up, Mahomes’ message to Veach was simple: He wanted a long-term deal with the Chiefs, and he wanted everyone involved to get creative.

I get that some will always resent Tony G for some of the things he’s said about ATL, but he speaks glowingly of KC here, and I don’t think it’s a put-on.

IMO TG changed the position completely, paving the way for others to follow. No TG88 and Gronk has a different career.

And while Gates is OK, IMO there are many better options in the KC area. 😉

Pretty much this. King Carl got off to a good start but didn’t age well, and his replacement wasn’t anything to write home about.

One thing I suspect strongly is that Veach views himself as leading a team and not some kind of whiz kid of his own. He’s been with Reid a long time, and that’s how Andy operates, depending on good communication with his subordinates in order to get the best out of them. Why wouldn’t Brett follow the same formula, he knows it works.

Not sure, but it tasted very heavily like bleach. Almost pool water.

I spent 5 months on an island where we made our own drinking water, so the heavy heavy bleach taste/smell was somewhat comforting. Not sure how comforting it was for my insides.

Rewatching the Steelers game from 2018 week 2. Patrick Mahomes is still incredible. And I don’t have any idea how we were a Ford offsides away from a Super Bowl that year, because our defense was terrible. I thought our defense this past year had some struggles, but they looked like the ‘85 Bears compared to 2018.

I expect your memories of the ’19 D are somewhat biased by your memories of poor performances early on, it’s a common phenomenon. That said, Spags said early on that he didn’t expect to have his system fully installed until mid-season, and lo and behold, that’s right about when they started getting good.

It’s easy to compound this by looking to their season-long stats uncritically. With the install happening they couldn’t perform up to capacity, and Clark’s nerve injury hampering his play didn’t help, either. This upcoming season should be interesting.

  • says the Chiefs are going back-to-back this year.

The receiver expanded on his point Wednesday on ESPN’s Get Up, saying the Chiefs can win at least three in a row:
“I say it’s definitely possible,” Watkins said of winning three straight Super Bowls.
“You have the best head coach, you have the best quarterback, one of the best wide receiver groups ever,” Watkins argued. “Now with the young guy [Clyde Edwards-Helaire], we have one of the best running back groups. Best tight end . . .

Finances weren’t Sammy Watkins‘ sole focus as he pondered his next move this offseason. . .

“But then I realized, how much money do I need? My family’s taken care of well. Do I want I go to a team and lose, and get 1,000 yards or go to a team that’s sorry, whatever the case may be. Or do I want to come back with one of the best coaches, the best quarterbacks, the best organizations, the best team, the best wideout group — arguably — and come try to fight for another championship?”

Watkins added that he’d “rather win another championship than go get another whatever type of crazy extension or crazy contract.”

And Chiefs will WIN with integrity!!!

Copying my post from earlier in the day.

Not even that. Season ticket purchases are rolled over until next year. STM will have access to a presale for single game tickets once capacity is detrmined in order of years of STM tenure. The prices will not reflect the price a STM usually pays, which means they will be jacked way up.

That is the gist of it in my email from the Chiefs

College football’s a different animal, though. They attend classes with non-players, tend to live with roommates who have lives of their own, and so social distancing is much more difficult for them. NFL players, however, can be much more careful about exposure to others and the NFL can better afford widescale testing of its players.

Now that is no guarantee that the season will be played out “notmally”, i.e. all the regular season plus postseason, but things might not be as grim as you fear, in this regard.

Nate Christensen
Reply to  BleedingRedAndGold
07/08/2020 6:49 pm

That’s why I still think the NFL will happen. There’s too much money on the line, plus if they get the ample amount of tests and can keep players from getting overexposed/safe, they should run the season. At a certain point, if you can test everyday, there’s a level of personal responsibility there

For college players, that can’t happen. Especially as more college shutdown, the less likely college football happens. Teams can’t stay open for workouts. I’m a big college football fan, so I brought it up just to say that I don’t expect it. I agree, they’re definitely not the same

My guess; if guys are getting Day 1-2 hype, especially if they get some sort of Combine, we’ll see plenty of underclassman go out still. Too much money on the line

Where it will hurt is the later half of the draft, where it may just be Seniors. The market and amount of underclassman on Day 3 won’t be very high, which really hurts. The amount of draftable talent will diminish, and the UDFA class may really suck
