Cable TV was also a turning point – back in the day you had the three networks – I do remember life before ABC. People were more informed cause the news was shown at the same time on all three networks. I can now escape reality by staying on my western channel.

How much rewarding would life be with no TVs?
The more our technology advances – the more isolated we become as a society. Hanging on the front porch, huddling around a radio, one family with one TV – all opportunities to create close bonds. Walk ten miles or drive ten miles and see which one makes you appreciate the distance more. With all the technology we have now, people no longer have to communicate.
I strongly disagree that with only three stations and the local news rag folks were better informed. They simply had no other sources to tell them the “truth”, such as how Cronkite declared the Tet offensive to be a “huge defeat” for the US. The opposite was true, in military terms, but Cronkite had spoken, and that’s when LBJ gave up.
Yellow journalism has never gone entirely away, and having three networks saying the same sorts of things about the same event is not more informative. Not to mention that the networks had a literal bias in how they covered the respective Partys, at least after Watergate.
My point was that I watched the news and became informed as I was growing up since that was the only thing on TV. Think of how huge the Jerry Lewis Telethon was before cable. Think of how important the Academy Awards were before cable. As our options expand, our minds as a collective group became smaller.
I see, but that only increases the importance of our commonalities, in this case the Chiefs.
Some prefer to destroy those commonalities, though, as has been on display here at AG. Also, Sam Kinison rightly skewered Lewis’ telethon, toward the end of the run it started coming out that it was more of a cash cow for the big-name performers than a source of revenue to fund muscular dystrophy research. That’s right in line with the NFL’s Pinktober crap, too, but hardly isolated incidents.
I think its the number of 24 news outlets trying to fill their time with dramatizations for ratings. Modern journalists are to real fact based journalism what WWE is to real wrestling. The people on both sides of this increasing divide are not so different from one another, its more their information sources.

But I would like to take a moment to honor a great career by remembering the moment he gained my respect.
It doesn’t seem to get mentioned for an amazing accomplishment, but in the 2008 playoffs he finished a game after tearing his ACL. I never doubted his toughness after that.
He did everything in his power to try and win. You have to respect that in any player – rival or not.

Most people are referring to Watergate here – I am referring to the election that he lost to Kennedy back in 1960.
It was the first televised election. Nixon was sick with a cold or something and looked like shit. Kennedy was tall, good-looking and eloquent. It was hard to beat that.
The mafia helped Kennedy win Chicago and lord knows where else as dead people voted in the election. Several people wanted Nixon to contest the election – He refused because he believed it would hurt the country to do so. I respect that action when he had every reason to contest. I cannot defend the latter Nixon.
