The History of Black Monday in the NFL | nbcchicago

Jan. 10, 2022, marks an unfortunate annual tradition across the NFL: Black Monday.

While Jon Gruden and Urban Meyer failed to make it through the year, other franchises are expected to cut ties with key figures on Monday, the first day after the regular season ends.

With Week 18 added to the 2020 NFL season, Black Monday got pushed back a few days, but its impact on coaches and general managers remains. What is the origin of the phrase, and who is in danger of becoming a Black Monday casualty in 2022?

They were okay until the season started…

Melvin Gordon Points to How Broncos Squandered Such a ‘Well-Built Team | si.com

Surely, GM George Paton knows this. And after leading the Broncos to three straight losing seasons, Fangio will be relieved of his duties come ‘Black Monday’.

Along with him, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will be shown the door. With all the criticism Shurmur has justifiably endured, it’ll likely be a relief on some level to hit the bricks and move on to newer pastures.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates following Tuesday’s practice | usatoday

“Really, the only players who didn’t practice today were Lucas Niang and Clyde (Edwards-Helaire),” Reid said. “Lucas obviously has a ruptured patellar tendon, so he’s not going to play. But Clyde, he has a chance to. So he’ll keep rehabbing that and make sure that he’s got a chance to get better.”

I’m OK with blitzing Joe Burrow. But you can’t telegraph it like Mathieu does, and you can’t whiff on the tackle like Mathieu.

But on 3rd and 27? 0 blitz? No. Any stop you get, even for a makeable FG, is a stop, and you can’t let that get away from you!

Our front 4 were getting home on occasion, but you can’t give him time, and the 4-man DID give him time on numerous occasions. I’m just not sure our guys were prepared for what they faced. Missed tackles and bad angles, even when they had guys corralled.

I didn’t see the Bengals do anything they haven’t been doing, but our guys seemed surprised. Hesitant. If they spread out, they’re running verticals. If they’re compressed, they’re running flat routes to the perimeter.

I see offense and defense by the Chiefs that seems pretty ossified, that learns the wrong lessons from its asterisk wins. On the bright side, they’ve got good film on everybody they’re likely to face in the playoffs.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to pay top dollar for Mathieu this offseason?

I like TM32 for who he is. I’d be happy if Veach kept him, assuming there isn’t someone better and cheaper out there.

Blitzing on 3rd an 27 was a gamble for sure. If we’d sacked his ass, they would have had to punt and we would likely have won.

Whether one agrees with the gamble or not, our defense seems to play much better and make bigger plays when they are aggressive. I’ve seen us give up what seem like countless yards in these situations when our front 4 ain’t getting it done fast enough and we’re just chasing receivers around.

We just lost the gamble. It is what it is.

Biggest surprise for me about the Chiefs offense is its struggle to put up points/TDs in the 2nd half of games. Over the past nine games they’ve scored 166 points in opening half but only 92 in 2nd half (excluding OT). In 5 of the games they did not score a TD in 3Q or 4Q.

I was thinking the same thing and there must be reasons like he isn’t as good as who has been out there. I trust Reed when it comes to O linemen he will play the best. Now Sapags and DB’s is another thing.

I can see why Thornhill got demoted earlier in the season. His vision and instincts seem pretty lacking, at times. What I don’t understand is why Dirty Dan got the call and was asked to play single-high during the demotion.

As for O-Line, I’ve noticed a number of times over the years how the better O-Lineman sits on the bench until an injury forces them onto the field, and they’re better than the guy they replaced.

Maybe 2020 was a bad year for O-Line, but when interior OL was their most glaring weakness after 2019 season, when they drafted CEH #32, it was a heart-breaker, especially when I saw he was slower than molasses in winter. They drafted a project OT in the 3rd (Niang) and a backup OG in the 6th (Allegretti).

We know the likely scenario
Tennessee with the one seed unless they lose to the Texans
Chiefs with the two seed unless they lose to the Broncos
Bengals with the three seed unless they lose the Browns
Bills and Patriots – four and five – with games against the Dolphins and Jets

Pittsburgh and Baltimore eliminated if the Colts beat the Jaguars
IF the Colts lose, Raiders and Chargers could both get in the playoffs if they tie – there has been speculation that they might do so IF the Colts lose. What would the NFL do IF they actually played the entire game to get a tie?

Not so distant memories:
“The Chiefs entered Week 17 of the season a long shot to make the playoffs, needing a win and a loss from the Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, and Tennessee Titans.[1] In an unlikely clinching scenario, the Chiefs defeated the Jaguars 35–30, the Bengals, Titans, and the Broncos lost, allowing the Chiefs to clinch the sixth seed in the 2006–07 playoffs and clinching their first playoff berth since the 2003 season.”
