He’s one of several players from that era that never got their due because the team, especially the passing offense, was just so bad. I think it was tougher then for a good player on a bad team to get recognized, especially if he wasn’t in a skill position. Our DBs did get credit, but there were a lot of good players on those teams that never got the recognition they deserved.
I seem to remember some blog did a Thursday night series about just this thing. “Good players on Bad Teams”.
Wish I could remember what thoughtful person did that and where it was.
