Good morning AG!

Today in Chiefs’ history, nothing.

Elsewhere, Samuel Johnson, who’s greatest work was his “Dictionary of the English Language” was born in 1707. Although not the first English dictionary it proved to be the most influential, its length was extensive and it included not only definitions but illustrations of usage.

Pat Leonard’s NFL Notes: Patrick Mahomes with a chip on his shoulder is bad news for rest of NFL | Twin Cities Pioneer Press

Relentless is a good way to describe Mahomes’ attitude now in his fifth full season as a starter. He’s out to remind everyone who he is, who the Chiefs are – they are the team you were unwise to overlook.

Chiefs’ Defense Is Ahead of Schedule Through Two Games | SI

In years past under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs’ defense has gotten out to slow starts and improved as the team got deeper into its season. With plenty of new faces across each level of the defense in 2022, it was expected that this would be the case again.

Chiefs snap counts: Rookie Skyy Moore plays just 2 snaps on offense | Chiefswire

A pretty even share of snaps, with 70 total offensive snaps and 75 total defensive snaps in this game. We’re starting to get an idea of who will contribute frequently in 2022 and who might need some things to happen before they get a bigger snap share.

4 underrated Chiefs performances in Week 2 vs. Chargers | Chiefswire

While there were plenty of clear standout performers that we’ve already discussed, there were also quite a few underrated performances that contributed in a big way to the team’s win over the Chargers. Here’s a look at four of the team’s underrated performances in Week 2:

Chiefs felt they were the better-conditioned team in Week 2 vs. Chargers | Chiefswire

“The way (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid does things it makes it easier for us during the season so a game like this, we’ve had back-to-back days like this in training camp, so you know when you take that in hindsight…that’s what it’s all about.”

Five things that stood out in the Kansas City Chiefs’ thrilling win vs. LA Chargers | KC Star

And to think — he was only starting Thursday because of an injury to first-round pick Trent McDuffie. Don’t ever listen when someone says picks in the late rounds of an NFL Draft don’t matter.

It is nice to be able to watch the weekend games unfold with a Chiefs win already done. I don’t like Thursday night games, they screw up game prep (and mess with my weekday mornings routine). I suppose a well-coached team (like the Chiefs) will fare better. And of course there’s the advantage of extra days rest/prep before the next game. I’m glad the Chiefs’ appearance on Thursday night occurred this early in the schedule.

Reading how some Chiefs players were saying they were ready for the short week and also reading observations that some Chargers players were gassed underlines the importance of good coaching.

Good articles today. As far as underrated performances. I was pretty tough on Townsend 1st 2 punts but he really turned it around. Especially the first one, he needs to get that one pinned deep.

I just can’t put Mecole on there because of the drop. Jugs machine all week.

As far as the defensive progression, I think we’ve played great considering who we have played. Murray can be a total nightmare and we completely neutralized him. Obviously, Herbert is damn good too. I want to see a little more creativity out of the front 7. Outside of Chris Jones our pass rush is pretty flawed (not exactly the word I’m looking for). Furious has potential but is still learning. Dunlap looks good but is old and can’t play 70% of the snaps. Danna looks better but still like a rotational guy. Frank looks washed to me. I don’t see anything pass rushwise from the other DTs.

Sneed seems to be spags go to dB Blitzer and for good reason. Chenel had a chance this week. And I think that’s what we need to see more of, ILBs coming on blitzes. Maybe a safety blitz or 2

I didn’t see Townsend’s first two punts the way you did. The first one Townsend was standing on the Chiefs 40 yard line and he punted to the LAC 3 yard line. The ball did not skip into the endzone but bounced up a little giving the cover unit a chance to down the ball. The LAC return man astutely blocked the first Chief to arrive (Justin Watson) or it would have been downed inside the five.

The second punt he punted from his own 3 yard line and the receiver caught it at his own 37 – 60 yards – and the returner advanced 5 yards. As a perspective, averaging returns on punts of 4 yards is exceptional in the NFL.

Last year Townsend led the league in percent of punts downed/tackled inside the opponents 20 with 54%. No other punter was over 48%. And his average return was 4 yards. He’s simply one of the best. Just my 2 cents.

I thought he did great after the first 2 punts.

That’s not how punts are measured, so your 60 yard punt is at best extremely misleading. They are measured from los. So 45 yard punt. Was it high and not allowing a return, I guess, but we needed a pick me up and that was at best an average punt.

The first one was not good. It happens but again from where he was he needs to be better.

My biggest issue with Townsend is that I think his inside the 20 stats are misleading. He seems to hit a lot of punts that should be inside the 10 to the 18 yardline. Plus he seems to perform poorly in high pressure situations.

easy to criticize, difficult to do … have you ever been a punter? can you do better than Townsend? if so, have at it … BE the Punting Hero God King that you want the Chiefs to have

that said, if you CAN’T go out there and punt a football 50 or 70 yards when half a dozen really big guys are running towards you wanting to separate your head from your shoulders and it all happens in about 2.5 seconds, then I might suggest that you give the guy a little bit of a break

Dak Prescott and TJ Watt were eliminated last week. The story line was all about the injuries though Prescott was playing like crap while Watt was being a stud once again. Mahomes and Herbert both performed well on Thursday so the others at the top must do well. Two more will be cut this week and here is the current bottom feeders

30) Joe Brady Burrow
31) Mitch Trubisky
32) Zac Wilson
33) Jacoby Brissett
34) Davis Mills
35) Carson Wentz
36) Daniel Jones
37) Trevor Lawrence
38) Mac Jones

Who will be the next two gone?
