SLATE: Byron Pringle gettin’ paid | bringonthecats.com

https://www.bringonthecats.com/k-state-slate/2021/4/30/22411582/slate-chiefs-byron-pringle-getting-paid

The Chiefs love Byron Pringle. His teammates even pressed Andy Reid to get him more involved in the offense before the Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay.

They showed that love yesterday, signing the former Kansas State wideout as reported by Charles Goldman at ChiefsWire. Pringle inked a one-year restricted free-agent deal which will pay him $2.133M. It’s a non-guaranteed deal, and that it’s only one year indicates that Pringle is probably going to have to have a career year to remain in the red and white in 2022. But it’s a pretty nice payday.

Broncos’ Aaron Rodgers-Free Draft Day Disaster | westword.com

The NFL draft, which kicked off yesterday, April 29, is a hopeful time for terrible teams such as your Denver Broncos, with fans fantasizing about a return to glory led by a new quarterback — either a ballyhooed rookie or veteran signal caller who could jump-start the squad in a manner similar to Peyton Manning, whose acquisition in 2012 resulted in two Super Bowl trips and one league championship during a spectacular four-year run.

Sometimes you know what you are going to do is wrong, but for some reason you do it anyways and can’t explain why. Usually you outgrow that around 12 yrs old…

Hill, Drob, Hardman – no rookie is going to crack the top three until the latter part of the season. Pringle – a rookie might drop him down the depth chart. After that, anything goes.

Yeah but people keep telling me that we drafted Creed as a long term investment. So why shouldn’t we have the long term in mind for a WR prospect?

Next year’s draft, we will still be saying that no rookie WR is going to crack the top three. And the draft after that. And all the drafts after that.

Exactly. DRob and Hardman are probably gone after this year anyway. A good rookie WR could displace either of them.

I will try not to overreact with the Chiefs picks from this point on – anything we add at this point is icing on the cake. We should consider it a win if we find one player who might see significant snaps on offense or defense this year. We have added a starting LT, a soon to be starting C, and a probable next year starting Mike linebacker – Hitch and Gay will see most of the action this year as we play more two linebacker formations than not. Any defender that we select – no matter the position – will be battling for a spot at the tail end of our depth chart. Any offensive lineman we select would most certainly be a developmental prospect. A running back prospect could nail down a spot in our rather weak collection of backs and there is certainly room on our receiver depth chart to do the same. Look for a speed candidate with return experience – our return game has sucked since the days of Tyreek. Tight End is another spot that a rookie could catch hold – we have room for someone who is a reliable catcher of the ball with some blocking skills.

You know, I get everyone wanting a receiver – I do as well – but, overall, the second tier of receivers in the draft all dropped as a whole so the Chiefs were not the only ones that passed on them with an initial pick. There was nobody that stood out to me as aha – this has to be our pick.

Terry Mclaurin, Tyreek Hill, Antonio Brown, Adam Theilen etc. etc. There’s still a chance to draft a guy with upside.

The thing is that I’m sure that WR is one of our top needs. If it’s not a big need, then waiting to “draft a guy with upside” is just fine.

Anyway, we’ll see. I hope our Tyreek + JAGs WR corps is good enough.

Not a scout so I do not know this answer – were any of the receivers drafted last night significantly better than Drob or Hardman? If the answer is yes, then we dropped the ball – no pun intended.

That’s the wrong question. Because nobody knows for sure what a prospect will turn into.

The point is, that was our best opportunity, opportunity, to get a better receiver.

This reminds me of all the times when people said we shouldn’t draft a QB in the first round unless we’re sure he’s better than Smith (or Cassel). It’s fake logic, because if you actually applied it consistently then you would always trade all your draft picks for “proven” vets.

Brady Quinn – Johnny Manziel – have to draft a quarterback no matter what in the first round. I trust Veach and company have done their homework and determined that Bolton and Creed were the BPA at the time.

Yeah I’m sure they were seen as BPAs. I like both of them.

Thing is, BPA isn’t always the same as MVA (most valuable available).

Yes – and quite a few went in the third round – many of which were projected to go higher and there are some still on the board that were projected as second round picks. The traditional rush on wide receivers started later this year than in years past.

8 OL vs 4 WR – second round picks before the Chiefs selection so all of those 8 teams passed on a potential game changing wide receiver you keep talking about.

So to sum up, a five-pick stretch with four of those picks being receivers.

Yesterday was a lot of fun, and criticism of our 2nd pick should be considered. The bottom line for me is that it would be great if Patrick had another solid target, but it doesn’t mean anything if he is in the hospital with a dislocated body.

There are a few that kept hammering how they didn’t like the positional value of our picks. I get it. LBs and OL are not sexy flash picks. But let’s say you have a top tier RB, QB, WR and TE on the team and there is no blocking. Does it really make sense to go and grab another splashy position player all the while, the QB runs for his life, the RB gets no push and no time for a route to develop? If you have to seal the leaks with your first few picks, then maybe some need to reconsider what a value pick really is. When you can finish the deal on your offensive line early in the draft and then probably not have to ever draft for more than depth for the next 5 years, then that is truly a value pick. In the same vein, we have complained about how our LBs have been slow to read and respond and haven’t brought much attitude for the last few years. The weakest link on our defense has come from our LB position. When you have the ability to go out and grab a top rated LB in the draft to fix that problem, then that is value. I know some of you wanted Cox, but from what I have researched, that means we would have drafted a near duplicate of Willie Gay and we already have one of those. Bolton has brought the wood for Mizzou against top tier talent for a few years and looks to fill a position of need. If he was available to us as our first pick, 58 picks into the draft, then you did well. Also, the Covid effect on the rest of this draft. A lot of teams and players in college were not able to display their best effort and some simply did not play. I think there are going to be a lot of late round picks that may turn out to be real gems because of what we didn’t get to see and no one will… Read more »

There was discussion last night about teams valuing next year’s picks, plus what it might have taken to do that would not have been worth it. Nonetheless I half expected to wake up this morning and see a breaking news post here about just that given Veach’s aggressive approach. I’m going to add Safety to my wish list for today, it seems there’s some good ones still available from what I’ve read here, and, while Thornhill was coming on strong at the end of the year, what is said about the impact of a Kelce injury can also be said about the honey badger.

Here’s a thought. On the day we draft a LB and C, we also sign an RB and resign one of our WRs. No clue why we signed the RB bit doing it on draft day makes you wonder if there was another RB in the 1st or 2nd we had our eye on. Plus, our WR signs the contract he had we had to have given him much earlier. Is it because we didn’t draft a WR in the 2nd?

Yes, it is a beautiful day, blue sky and sunny here, good conditions for finishing up a job started two days ago: clearing the underbrush, hawthornes and wild grape vine from a stand of spruce. And Veach&Co have given the day a greater glow for me but the job’s not done, Sneed was a fourth rounder. Hoping for a pass-catching TE, but we’ll see what happens. Saw above that Pringle was signed for the year but that doesn’t mean they won’t draft a WR they really like. Last thought, Andy Reid’s presser, on Nick Bolton: “It was a no-brainer.”

My only real concern at this point is whether a good WR will be available when we pick. I’m starting to think Veach may end up trading for a veteran. Anthony Miller (Bears) was on the market last month. I could see Reid wanting someone with starting experience lining up opposite Tyreek.
