Chiefs news for October 25, 2021

Good Morning AG! Let’s face it. The Chiefs aren’t that good. It’s amazing how fast things can change in the NFL. Let’s see how many others feel that way… And for my 2 cents worth, I don’t think its the GM’s fault. He got players that had been solid in previous systems, but not in ours. So… It must be our system! Come on coaches!

Titans rough up Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs in 27-3 victory | cbs

The Titans sacked Patrick Mahomes four times, knocking him out of the game in the fourth quarter, and Ryan Tannehill ran for a touchdown and threw another as Tennessee blew out Kansas City 27-3.

Derrick Henry causes Chiefs defenders to make obvious business decisions | yahoo

https://sports.yahoo.com/derrick-henry-causes-chiefs-defenders-193336028.html

The Chiefs and their leaky defenses decided to take things to the next level on Sunday. It’s hard enough to bring Henry down when you’re trying to tackle him; if you’re obviously not… well, you might as well go 7-on-7 in the parking lot and call it a day.

There was this sort of arm tackle from the usually outstanding defensive lineman Chris Jones…

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffers apparent head injury on fourth-down sack | yahoo

After a forgettable performance on both sides of the ball against the Tennessee Titans, protection issues on the offensive line gave way for the unthinkable. Dropping back to try and make a pass on fourth down, Patrick Mahomes was wrapped up, twisted awkwardly and shaken up going to the ground. He suffered an apparent head injury and had to be helped off the field by several teammates, looking quite shaken up after the play.

Let’s take stock of what happened Sunday as KC Chiefs lost so thoroughly to the Titans | kansas.com

https://www.kansas.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article255210581.html#storylink=mainstage

Any hope that the Chiefs might’ve been able to carry over some momentum from their Week 6 win at Washington was quickly dashed against a clearly superior opponent on Sunday.

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes Provide Injury Update on Star QB | si.com

https://www.si.com/nfl/chiefs/gameday/andy-reid-and-patrick-mahomes-provide-injury-update-on-kc-chiefs-star-qb

When he spoke to the media after the game, head coach Andy Reid announced that Mahomes cleared the obligatory concussion protocol tests. Reid also added that it was his decision to hold Mahomes out for the remainder of the contest. Considering the nature of the play and the scary aftermath, early indications are that the Chiefs dodged a bullet. Mahomes spoke on the injury, too.

2021 NFL season, Week 7: What we learned from Sunday’s games | cbs

https://www.nfl.com/news/2021-nfl-season-week-7-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games

Titans make a massive statement. Back-to-back impressive wins against AFC heavyweights for Mike Vrabel’s club. Tennessee dominated from the jump, controlling the ball with ease against a struggling Chiefs defense. Ryan Tannehill‘s offense scored on all five of its first-half possessions to leap out to a 27-0 halftime lead. Derrick Henry continued to be a field-tilting beast and started his day with a jump-pass TD on the opening drive. For the first time since Week 1, Henry didn’t hit the century mark on the ground. It speaks volumes for the Titans that they didn’t need to ride the back to blow out the Chiefs. K.C. stacked the box to slow the RB — Henry faced seven-plus defenders in the box on 26 of 29 rushes. Tannehill and A.J. Brown then ripped the defense apart with chunk games. It’s the type of dual-threat offense that allows Tennessee to bludgeon opponents. Fun note: Henry threw more TD passes than Patrick Mahomes this week.

okay. I’ve had enough. This is like googling obituaries. Times yours…

Seth’s newsletter today is very good. I hope the Chiefs’ FO is taking some honest looks in the mirror.

I know that their “we’re gonna get this stuff all figured out” press conferences are for public consumption only and rightfully designed to not throw any of their own players under the bus and don’t reflect their real process behind the scenes. Probably. But, god damn, just the slightest chance that they might actually believe that complacent nonsense they’re putting out to us…that’s enough to make me start to wonder what it will look like the next time Clark cleans house.

Five weeks to get Sorensen’s snaps reduced. Five weeks, for something that even Sorensen’s mom must’ve seen needing to happen. Pulling teeth doesn’t even describe that level of stubborn, that’s like….pulling the same god damned tooth for five god damned weeks.

Now sure, the Sorensen/Thornhill switch isn’t THE problem. It’s just a small thing, in the grand scheme. But, I’m concerned that it might have been just one visible sign of a much bigger problem. Maybe even THE bigger problem.

We didn’t sign Whitney Mercillus. I dunno, maybe he’s not good anymore. But then, our current defense is even worse than not good.

The thing that worries me about the Mercillus non-action, is that he apparently chose GB because there he could be more of a linebacker. Well, he could have done that here. A rush DE who is competent in zone coverage – Spags could easily have offered to play him at SAM. It wouldn’t be traditional, but also wouldn’t be all that unusual. Spags himself has done it before – Matthias Kiwanuka, a high level player who swapped between SAM and DE, playing for the best defense that Spags was ever a part of.

Of course there’s not really an obvious hole at SAM right now. They’ve been grooming Gay to play that position. It would be work to switch Gay to another role, say primary WILL, because I’m sure they plan to move Bolton back to that role when Hitchens heals.

Of course Hitchens might not be here next season, and Bolton seems destined for MIKE, and Gay is more than athletic enough to be a WILL, and Mercillus at SAM would help with our lack of pass rush around the end, and a LB line-up of Mercillus-Bolton-Gay could be so fucking awesome. But, re-arranging things like that right now could be troublesome, and maybe embarrassing for the current leader of the LB room, and the coaches are already so busy prepping for the next game…..

I’m worried that the reason we didn’t make enough of a push to get Mercillus here may be because the coaches thought it would just be too much bother to re-arrange the plans they already have. That would be unacceptable, and a reason for a thorough house cleaning.

Maybe I’m all out of bounds here with my speculation. But to me, it seems very plausible and extremely depressing.

Our offense practices against our defense. I am sure everything the offense does in practice works great against our defense. Then game time, surprise! Nothing works. ( I know it ain’t that simple) Also Clark yuckin it up on the sideline pissed me off Id trade him for a ham sandwich

When do you cut him? I suppose you cant cut him until we are officially dead. Which may be Monday night. I see no point in keeping him on the roster once we are eliminated. I highly doubt he ever plays another snap in the NFL once hes cut whether it be in season or in the off season.

After stewing on this overnight, I think a move that would help is to get Alex Smith on the sidelines as a QB coach. He’s worked with Pat before, and can probably help center him. I think Pat is feeling the weight of the kingdom and he needs a personal coach that knows the system. Also, this will probably never happen, but if I was Clark, I would ask Reid to temporarily step away for a mental health break. I know Reid wants to work through family issues but a pattern is developing. If something happens with his kids, the season suffers. It’s completely understandable but they have a team to run. I definitely don’t want to do him like Philly did, but he needs some time away from the HC gig. The team can’t be his personal therapy tool at the cost of winning.

Also: Hardman & Robinson the BOZO brothers – would NOT be the 4th best WR on any NFC team, stats wise for 2021. Google it for the people that are denial.

Now we WHY Chiefs were pursing: JuJu Smith-Schuster

Also the ROOKIE Right Tackle should have been pulled after week TWO – re-sign Mitchell S
And ROOKIE Right GUARD…………NEEDS to be pulled: The DR or Kyle Long

Orlando Brown – NO COMMENT, just SMH!!!!

Hardman might be okay as the #3 receiver but I question the DRob love from the team. He is a fifth receiver at best. Remmers is a temporary upgrade over Niang who did need to be pulled. MS may not be the player that he once was but worth a look. Will defend Smith – he had one bad game but has been solid other than that for a rookie. The doctor will be traded and we will see what Long can do in the future. May not have a replacement ready to go for Brown. He had been improving but he needs to solve the speed rush quick.

Well, he isn’t great. He’s not terrible, like whoever that dude we had a few years ago…McSpin? He’s not McSpin, but obviously he’s not Prime Schwartz either. Maybe, the Mendoza line?

I wasn’t really high on trading for Brown before the season. But my plan-A then was to let Niang have a shot at LT, Remmers being the RT starter. My plan-B was draft a rookie LT. Because after Trent Williams (who is injured now) was off the table, there really wasn’t another likely option as far as I remember.

As much as we’re complaining about our tackles now, it could easily be much worse.

And its a freaking contract year. Unless theres major improvement I dont see him sticking at LT. Do you franchise him and move him to RT? Im at a loss.

He was abused big time yesterday – he has been at least average in the games before that. I do not think he would be willing to move to RT given everything I have heard. Move on and find another LT if Brown does not show improvement – Franchise is a possibility but I have not seen any evidence that we should sign him long term.

His weakness always has been a pure speed rusher, fully committed to out-racing him around the edge. He wouldn’t have to worry about that so much if the Chiefs were in a position to run the ball by those types of rushers.

It is therapeutic for me so I will drop one more set here before I leave for awhile.

80 – Jake Plummer
79 – Jim Plunkett
78 – Arnie Herber
77 – Neil Lomax
76 – Andy Dalton
75 – Don Meredith
74 – Bart Starr
73 – Milt Plum
72 – Bob Waterfield
71 – Vinny Testaverde

Commentary: I expect people to go who on at least three of these names – Herber goes back to the thirties, Waterfield the forties, and Plum the fifties and sixties. Bart Starr might have won with the Packers but there were several quarterbacks of his era that ranked much higher. I probably appreciate Vinny Testicleverde – aka Vinny Green Ball – more than the other quarterbacks.

For good measure, here is another set – I might post another on tonights game thread depending on when I get home – have a meeting that I have to attend.

90 – Craig Morton
89 – Ron Jaworski
88 – Jay Schroeder
87 – George Ratterman
86 – Tommy Kramer
85 – Joe Ferguson
84 – Troy Aikman
83 – Tobin Rote
82 – Mark Rypien
81 – Jake Delhomme

Commentary: Remember, this is what the statistics say – this is not my list. The obvious surprise is Aikman being that low. His statistics were not overwhelming and his record was good but not great. Having to retire took some years from him. You may not recognize Ratterman – He goes back to the AAFC – playing second fiddle to the legendary Otto Graham. I do not believe Delhomme is as good as his rank. Joe Ferguson was an underappreciated player back in the day.

That was hard to watch.

With regard to the unusually high number of interceptions, is it because the line is too porous, forcing us into hurried throws? Is the trust not there yet between Mahomes and the line? Or is it because Mahomes feels like he needs to carry the team on his back as he has had to do so many times before?

Mahomes is pressing no doubt – One Man Mahomes is the reason we have any wins. I break down his interceptions into three categories. 1 – Balls that bounce off receivers hands. 2 – Balls where he is trying to make something happen. 3 – Bad interceptions generally caused by pressure
