Chris Jones, Willie Gay Jr. define Chiefs’ new defensive identity | usatoday
Veterans Chris Jones and Willie Gay were asked to explain the defensive unit’s identity during Wednesday’s press conference. While it’s still quite early, there is one word that Jones feels defines what this defense aspires to be.
“A gritty, gritty(defense), if you want to sum it up in one word,” said Jones, “You’ve got to be a gritty defense, and that’s from the coaching staff to the players on the sideline to the players are starting. There’s got to be grit. Don’t let go of the rope. We’re always fighting. And once we attain that mentality, I think we can push for it from that.”
Chiefs RB Ronald Jones reveals similarity between Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady | chiefswire
Newly acquired Chiefs RB Ronald Jones played two seasons with Brady and now is set to play with Mahomes this upcoming season in Kansas City. Jones shared his take on one similarity between his new quarterback and his former Bucs quarterback during Wednesday’s minicamp press conference.
“Just like the command, you know, that presence in the offense,” said Jones. “Like Coach always says, you know, he’s got the keys. Yeah, I guess (them being) a student of the game was probably the biggest comparison.”
WATCH: Chiefs premiere final episode of ‘Work to Win’ | chiefswire
This particular episode is titled, “Rookie Arrival.” Based on the trailer, this episode will provide fans with a look at how the rookie draft picks get accustomed to their new team. They seem to spend a lot of time speaking with some of the team’s draft picks. They also show an impassioned speech from Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt at the rookie welcome dinner.
Chiefs DT Chris Jones provides update on last season’s wrist injury | usatoday
Jones missed Week 4 through Week 6, revealing upon his return that he was dealing with torn ligaments in his wrist. At the time, he took a few weeks off to let the injury subside, but he didn’t anticipate being 100% at any point during the 2021 NFL season.
“For the most part, just rest,” Jones said of his recovery. “Right now I’m feeling really, really good. Let’s knock on wood. You know how this game goes, the physicality of it. Right now, I’m feeling good. Attacking, running around.”
WATCH: Highlights from Day 2 of Chiefs mandatory minicamp | chiefswire
The Kansas City Chiefs completed their second mandatory minicamp practice on Wednesday. Video access remains sparse as it was during OTAs. Media members are given a very short period where they can record video at the onset of practice. The best clips with plays from team drills are sometimes shared by the team, while local media members get their opportunity to record during individual drills.
Chiefs Rookie Named ‘Player of the Day’ After Round 2 of Minicamp | heavy
“Player of the day.” “Standout.” Those were just a couple of the words and phrases used to describe rookie safety, Bryan Cook, out of Cincinnati. Drafted around the same time Tyrann Mathieu chose to sign in New Orleans, the youngster knows he has massive shoes to fill someday and he’s off to a great start.
Chiefs LB Willie Gay Reveals Reason Behind Mental Health Issues | heavy
Speaking to the media on June 15, Gay revealed the reason behind his mental health struggles last season.
“I learned from some things… I had my baby boy being born 16 weeks early,” Gay said. “He’s healthy now — doing good — so that’s some weight taken off my shoulders. So I just keep my head down, man, stay focused in this building, and try to keep everything outside of here in line and stay focused.”
Chiefs Camp: NFL Insider Explains Frank Clark’s Notable Absence | heavy
“The Chiefs have excused Pro Bowl DE Frank Clark from mini-camp,” informed Rapoport, “as he’s expecting the birth of his child any day.”
Outside of the versatile Chris Jones, who joked that learning the D-end position was “hard as hell” during his press conference this afternoon, Mike Danna’s three years of experience are the next most in the DE unit. For better or for worse, Clark has become a leader of this group and that makes his absence notable.
He’ll also most likely be incredibly important to this pass rush in 2022, starting across from rookie George Karlaftis. It looks like we’ll have to wait until training camp to truly see that duo in action but at the end of the day, that’s really no different than usual for the D-line.
