Chiefs news for 15 September 2020
In Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Bengals, Taylor completed 16 of 30 passes for 208 yards. He ran six times for just 7 yards.
Rookie Joshua Kelley had 60 yards in 12 carries (5.0 ypc) and the Chargers’ only touchdown. Kelley, who was taken in the fourth round, also broke open a 26-yard run.
A shoulder injury left star receiver Michael Williams’ status for the opener in doubt in the days leading up to the game. But he played and was targeted a team-high nine times with four catches for 69 yards.
The Chargers had three sacks, five tackles for loss, six quarterback hits and a forced fumble on Sunday. Also, defensive lineman Melvin Ingram intercepted a shovel pass from the Bengals’ Joe Burrow that stopped a late drive with LA up by three.
“Yeah, so you can’t leave the hotel,” Reid told reporters. “So, we’ll leave a little bit later, get to the hotel a little bit later, and then we won’t have the individual meetings we normally have out there. But we’ll be able to knock out our team meeting, then grab a bite to eat and get on with the evening. So, we’ll spend a little bit more time here with our morning meetings and get those done.”Patrick Mahomes: Proposing to Girlfriend More Nerve-Wracking Than Super Bowl
Question: “What’s more nervous, fourth quarter of the Super Bowl or finally proposing to your longtime girlfriend?
Mahomes: “Probably proposing, I would say. You don’t think it’s going to be nerve-wracking, especially when you’ve been with someone for so long. But before you get on that knee, your heart is racing, I promise you that.”
“We wanted to kind of get the run game going, is what we wanted to do,” Reid said. “Especially with a younger back, I think that was important to get him used to the speed of the game. But at the same time, you want production. You’re striving to put points on the board. So, a little bit of everything there that you mentioned — yeah, part of it was we got in there and it was working so we stuck to it. On the other hand, it was also good to get our young back some carries and experience, which I thought was important.”
In addition to their effectiveness in the passing game, the Chiefs run game also dominated. Clyde Edwards-Helaire started his NFL career with 25 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown, while Darrel Williams grabbed another 23. This largely had to do with the blocking up front by the Chiefs offensive line, who were finding their way four or five yards down the field almost every time CEH touched the ball. Left guard Kelechi Osmele especially has gotten quite a bit of credit for controlling any play in front of him.
If Reiter is unable to play on Sunday, the Chiefs have several options at their disposal, depending on how comfortable they feel with a lack of experience. Nick Allegretti was the team’s seventh round choice last year but played only 8 offensive snaps in 7 games for the Chiefs. He does, however, come with significant starting experience from years at center at the University of Illinois.
“He had some work done on it,” Reid said Monday. “We’ll just see where he’s at when it’s by game time. … We’ve just got to see how it feels.” Reid didn’t divulge specifically what was done with Ward’s injury. But the head coach made it clear the Chiefs will closely monitor Ward in the days leading to Sunday’s game before determining his availability.
