Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Chiefs stepped out on the chilly field seeking their 12th playoff win in 6 seasons against Miami with the offense getting the ball first.

The cold seemed to effect Mahomes early as he missed the first two easy throws high. But that’s all the offense needed to get warm. On the 3rd and 10 Mahomes hit Kelce perfectly for 11 yards to convert. After that Reid let Pacheco beat up on the Miami defense, as he gained 39 yards on 4 carries of the next 5 plays (the other was an 8 yard screen to Kelce) before Rashee Rice took the short pass into the endzone to make the score 7-0 good guys.

The Dolphins looked like the cold was effecting them more, as their first drive was a classic run-run-screen-punt. The Chiefs also punted after 3 plays, but on 3rd down Mahomes nearly had Hardman deep but he couldn’t track it (possibly because of the wind). The next drive the Dolphins actually managed to move the ball a little, getting close to midfield, but Tua still struggled in the cold as he missed a screen that would have been a big gain and on a 3rd and 6 threw the ball to Mike Edwards to give the Chiefs the ball on their own 42.

The Chiefs continued to look like the weather was only on the Dolphins side of the field, as on the 2nd play Mahomes found Rice wide open for a 23 yard gain, which was followed up by an 11 yard Pacheco run. After Kelce had a drop the Chiefs faced 3rd and 7, which Rice picked up on the crossing route (needing a replay to prove he actually got it). Two Pacheco runs picked up 4 yards and the 1st quarter came to an end.

2nd Quarter

The Chiefs opened the 2nd quarter facing a 3rd and 6 deep in Dolphins territory, but a bad snap ruined the play and Mahomes was forced to throw it away. Butker kicked the field goal to make it 10-0

The Butker kickoff was a knobbler that was picked up on the 19 and returned to the 38, giving the Dolphins the ball almost exactly where they last had it. That seemed to inspire the Dolphins, as on nthe 2nd play Tua lofted it up for Hill, and McDuffie badly misplayed it, leading to Hill scoring an easy touchdown to bring the score to 10-7.

The Chiefs offense remained hot on the next drive, starting with a 22 yard pass to Kelce on the first play. A couple plays later on 3rd and 3 Mahomes found MVS for a quick 7 to convert. A couple more plays later it was 3rd and 1, but the Dolphins were able to sniff out the reverse and forced a 4th and 5. In no man’s land with a long field goal being questionable in the cold the Chiefs went for it, and Mahomes scrambled for a huge 28 yard gain. Unfortunately an apparent Rice touchdown a couple plays later was called back on a Jawaan Taylor block in the back. Mahomes did a nice job finding Watson on the sideline to make it reasonable, but the 3rd and 10 pass was deflected, forcing a field goal to make it 13-7.

Miami went run heavy in their next drive, giving Mostert the ball on the first 4 plays and gained a combined 20 yards, but he dropped the screen on 3rd and 2 to set up a 4th and 2 which was incomplete thanks to pressure by Omenihu on an unusual 2 man rush and McDuffie knocking the pass down. Unfortunately the Chiefs couldn’t take advantage as on 3rd down a hold on Hardman wasn’t called, forcing a punt.

Thankfully the defense held strong, thanks in large part to a Karlaftis sack on 3rd and 13, and the Chiefs got the ball with 1:43 on the clock and 2 timeouts on their 39 yard line. They faced a quick 3rd and 10 after a Jawaan Taylor false start cancelled out a 5 yard catch by Rice, but Mahomes found Rice to beat the blitz who ran for a massive 39 yard gain. That’s about as far as it went, as facing time pressure in field goal range Mahomes decided to throw it away on 3rd down rather than risk running out of time, and Butker kicked another field goal to make it 16-7.

Miami had just 14 seconds left, and were aggressive as Tua found Waddle close to midfield with 6 seconds left. But they committed a hands to the face on the next play, so a reasonable coach would have taken a knee but McDaniel for some reason decided to go with a hail mary, which was not even remotely close so we went to halftime.

3rd Quarter

Miami got the ball to start the 2nd half, but couldn’t do anything as Omenihu blew up the attempted pass play on 3rd and 5 and Bolton stopped Tua on his attempted scramble. The Chiefs did better, as Mahomes had a nice pass over the defender to Gray for 20 yards on the 2nd play. Two plays later he found Kelce for 10, but the defense stoped as Kelce laid on top of the defender, and he was able to run for a gain of 13. A couple plays later Mahomes found Rice along the sideline for 10,. The next play CEH got stood up after 3 yards, but got pushed for a 12 yard gain. Two plays later it was Mahomes with the big run, squeezing through tackles and chipping his helmet on a 13 yard gain down to the 3. But that’s all they got, as Mahomes was forced to throw it away on back-to-back plays and it was yet another field goal to make it 19-7.

The Dolphins desperately needed some offense, which is why they went for it after facing a quick 4th and inches despite being deep in their own territory, but they managed to pick it up with an Achane run. But the risk ended up not paying off at all as a Karlaftis set up a 3rd and 14, and the short pass to Achane was not even close, forcing the punt.

The Chiefs ended the 3rd quarter with another solid drive. On the 2nd play the Dolphins roughed Mahomes in the Brady Rule way to give them a gain of 15, then Mahomes found Watson for 10 on the next play. A couple plays later a dangerous pass to Richie James was almost picked, but James redeemed himself on the ensuing 3rd and 5 when Mahomes found him for 6. One Pacheco run later and it was the final quarter.

4th Quarter

The first two plays were up and down. Trey Smith got called for a hold on the first play, but Mahomes immediately made it irrelevant by finding Rice deep for 28 yards on the next play. The drive almost stalled thanks mostly to a blitz hitting home and forcing an intentional grounding, setting up a 3rd and 20, but the Dolphins bailed out the Chiefs as Mahomes was roughed again on a completely unnecessary shove (on a play where Justin Houston forced a hold that wasn’t called). A couple plays later on 3rd and 4 a checkdown to CEH looked like it’d be stopped short, but CEH powered his way across the imaginary yellow line, setting up Pacheco to score the touchdown on the very next play to give the Chiefs a dominating 26-7 lead.

It was too little too late, but Tua finally came alive on the next Miami drive. on 3rd and 4 he lofted it up to a wide open Wilson for 19, then the very next play was another 19 yard pass to somebody named Cracraft. After a short pass to Mostert lost yards Tua scrambled for 14 yards to pick up the first down anyway. The next two plays weren’t as good though, a deep shot to Hill was nearly intercepted by Sneed, and Tua’s pass hit a lineman’s helmet and bounced backwards, and on the 3rd down McDuffied destroyed Hill after he caught the checkdown to make it a 4th and 16. For some reason Tua threw it short, and the Chiefs got the ball on downs.

Now it was all but over, with the Chiefs looking to burn the rest of the 6:22 on the clock and get back inside to the warmth without injuries. It was a run-run-pass(overthrew MVS, what’s new?)-punt 3-and-out The Dolphins offense looked like they just wanted to go home, facing a quick 4th and 6. They did manage to convert as they did a nice job picking up the blitz. They faced another 4th down a couple plays later, this time needing 10, and again they woke up for one play as Tua found Waddle on the sideline for 14. They again faced a 4th and 10 4 plays later, but this time Hill couldn’t handle the deep pass on the sideline and they finally turned it over on downs.

The Chiefs were running the clock out, and were doing a pretty effective job, but with 1:08 left on the clock CEH fumble the 3rd down run and the Dolphins recovered. The Dolphins got some garbage time yards to make themselves feel better, but it didn’t matter and the Chiefs won!

Miami never ran a play in the red zone. Closest they got was the 25 yard line.

I’m really surprised how aggressive Andy was down the stretch. With a 12 point lead late in the 3rd I thought he would just try to hang on from there. Credit to him he stayed aggressive.

Felt like he was trying to get the offense some rhythm for next week.

Dolphins have to be sick with that game. Reminds me of our wild card game against Baltimore about 15 years ago.

The one we had no business playing in? And somehow hosted a vastly superior team?

Yeah. Outside of one big play that went for a TD (JC). We didn’t score and got our asses handed to us.

You could tell from the get go – Reid and Mahomes were playing aggressive and Miami started with the very conservative don’t lose approach.

You should look into AI. That’s all I could find lately. Difficult too get past searches with all of the AI hub-bub images. Kinda lame for just hot chick coffee pics. I do like this AI generated image though:

I actually played around with it for today before I found something, but if you follow the link, you’ll see why I didn’t for one of them. That hands thing, again

Nice.
You’d have to download it to your computer, then either host it on something and link to that (I think that would work) or load it to the special section of the site that images are stored and link to that (which is a total pain)

Loved it. Loved the effort, loved the focus, did not like the penalties and those not called (how??) but I liked how they just didn’t matter.
For those (you) whining about the late fumble, please shut the fuck up. Kelce dropped not 1, not 2, but 3 tonight. In fact, I think he was the only guy who dropped something he touched.
They played liked they should have been all year.
