Game Summary
The Chiefs offensive starters managed to drive down the field on their first drive mostly thanks to a 20 yard pass to Justin Watson and a 39 yard pass to Worthy that could have gone for more but Mahomes overthrew him a bit, but the drive ultimately stalled with Mahomes being conservative and they settled for a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Lions move the ball a bit on their first drive, but ultimately stalled at midfield. The Chiefs responded with a drive that featured Rice early, then they had fun with a Mahomes behind-the-back pass and a reverse to Worthy. Ultimately the drive stalled when Mahomes checked down to Carson Steele with a defender right in his face, and another field goal made it 6-0.
The Lions fumbled the kickoff, and the offense came back out (this time with Wentz at quarterback). And in just three plays Wentz found a wide open Worthy in the endzone to put the Chiefs up 13-0. In the 2nd quarter Justyn Ross almost had a big catch on 3rd down but had half a foot out of bounds, which led to a rare punt highlight where new punter Matt Araiza got to show off his leg on a monster punt. Later the Lions had a highlight when Keith Taylor missed a tackle and allowed a 61 yard touchdown.
On the next drive Prince managed to find a hole and had a huge 41 yard run. The drive ended in a field goal, but most important was that Noah Gray was the long snapper as Winchester got injured. Then on the ensuing kickoff Louis Rees-Zammit got a kickoff attempt and did a good job. On the first play of the drive Keith Taylor got an interception, a rare highlight for him as he’s struggled so far in the preseason.
The 2nd half saw Remigio almost get a punt return touchdown, but got tripped up around midfield. A little later Skyy Moore had a similar big kickoff return that ended close to midfield. In the 4th quarter Oladokun found Cornell Powell on a great throw and Powell took it for a 64 yard touchdown. Late in the 4th quarter Ian Book came in late in the 4th quarter looking to run out the clock but fumbled to give the Lions the ball deep in Chiefs territory. The Lions then fumbled to give the Chiefs the ball right back, but Book again failed to pick up a game-clinching 1st down, and a good return on the punt gave the Lions another shot and this time they made the game winning field goal.

that last game is pretty much for the bubble guys. their last chance, and they can get on film for other teams to look at
Yeah, but I’d love to see if we picked up some and could stick them in for a last PS game for reps. Now, no chance until it matters.
We should see lots of Toney Thursday, unless the make the decision he’s gone and don’t waste the time on him at all.

It’s so sad. I remember being so excited when he casually adjusted his gloves before making a catch that first year. Now I know it was because he hadn’t realized it was coming to him yet. (Joking. Kind of)

One thing to consider is that if you wait to cutdown day, the waiver wire’s going to be loaded. If you’re trying to hide from someone, the best place to hide from them’s in a crowd, not an isolated space.
The first cuts were never guys you’d hope to sneak by anyway, but that is a good point. Maybe we keep someone just because there were 31 other guys at the same position let go at the same time.
While you’re right about the low-hanging fruit, I think there’s something to be said for muddying their own PS waters, *shrug*.
And I think I get your concept, to cut the dregs early the better to focus on those with some promise. Viewed that way, it makes sense, it’s just that there are a lot of other considerations involved, including that Andy seems to want those who get cut to depart with as much tape as practicable. Dunno if that’d matter with Toney, but cutting him right now would make hiim stand out as damaged goods, and Reid doesn’t like doing that to folks.
I guess they COULD release him now, if they wanted, but has anyone been released from any team? After camps started, the only releases I’ve heard of were retirements. Might be a rule now. No cuts until after that 3rd game.
Whatever the reason, I trust Andy and Brett to be all over the best way to do it

I agree with you on Moore, and more so on Toney. Guy’s got the talent to be great, but apparently lacks the mindset/focus needed to make his gifts work on the field.
I think the last straw was lining up wrong. Again. Agreed. Lack of focus, and I can’t see Andy tolerating that a second time

Our 3rd string QB looked much more 3rd string than he did last week. Thankfully, our 2nd string looked much less like a 3rd string.
He played with the 1st string after Pacheco
looked good and then was all over the special teams packages
Limited exposure, but I thought he looked pretty good, and LRZ had a good pass pro snap, too. Picked up his guy clean, and while he lost a little ground, he stopped him long enough. I think he got into his guy too high or something, but regardless, I expect better technique would’ve gotten better results. But he managed the basics, so that’s a good sign.

I did catch something about that from last week on the broadcast. Seems the other guy was starting to walk away, not knowing that under the new rules, it was still a live ball, so Hardman was hard-pressed for time when he tried to salvage something from it. Not that it was a good decision, obviously, but it does show it wasn’t the product of stupidity or laziness, he just didn’t have time to sort through the new rules.
Now that he knows, and drawing that safety’s a good teacher, he’s unlikely to do it again, since the burned hand teaches best. If he repeats the mistake, that’ll be a dumb thing to do in my book.
I always tell my students to make their mistakes in the dojo so we can fix them and they work if/when its for real
And as a team leader, I always looked at the process before laying any blame, because if the failure’s due to things like process, positioning, or leadership, shifting the blame doesn’t help. In actuality, it only makes things worse, though that doesn’t mean it’s never the worker’s fault, just that in those cases, carelessness, indifference, or their own wilfulness tend to be obvious, once the rest’s eliminated.
One of the things my kids loved about me as kids what that if they messed up in a way I hadn’t taught them anything about, they wouldn’t be punished as severely as they would if I had. “You should have known!” is an unreasonable accusation when they had no opportunity to learn the dos and don’ts of a new situation. I know that I had less trust in my parents from all the times they played that card on me.
