Know your Chiefs – Darian Kinnard

Darian Kinnard was born on December 29, 1999 in Youngstown, Ohio, but grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee.  There he attended Dobyns-Bennett High school, but moved to Cleveland, Ohio after his freshman year and attended Saint Ignatius High School.  He ended his career there rated as a four start recruit.  He chose to attend the University of Kentucky over offers from Penn State, UCLA, and Tennessee.

As a freshman, he played in nine games, starting two of the last three at left tackle.  His sophomore year he started all 13 games at right tackle, having only one penalty in 706 snaps.  In his junior year he was first team All-SEC.  In his senior year he was consensus First-Team All-American and a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy.

Besides being related to Dolly Parton, his other claim to fame was being drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2022 draft.

Because of Kinnard’s quickness issues and lack of agility, players were at times able to shoot gaps on him against the run, as well as the obvious problem of getting beaten in space on the edge as a pass protector. He also is not a player who is at his best getting into space in the screen/run game. While he’s functional in a straight line and does a good job engaging in space, he’s not going to be able to alter/move his direction in those scenarios (he’s very, very similar to Brown in that regard).

Is it bad or good to have both OTs with the same weaknesses and strengths?

On the glass-half-full side, it should make practices and game planning simpler.

I am remembering the glory days of Drew Brees’ stint in NO. On that Oline, the OTs weren’t really standouts, but the OG-C-OG lineup was one of the best in the league. The OTs just protected against inside moves, and Brees constantly had an open pocket to step up into.

So we have three OT’s that can’t move? Huh, that isn’t very encouraging.
