Into the Afternight, Our 3rd Shift Open Thread.
16 repliesIf you’re still up and want to talk Chiefs, or just hang with fellow citizens of the Kingdom, this is the place.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m tired and drawing something of a blank for something to say, so how about a couple of the late, great Billy Preston’s best.
See? Now for round 2.
Guy deserved better than life gave him, is all I can say. For myself, right now I’d settle for a nap, so if I’m not around at first, that’s why. Oh, and he and Clapton have something in common, so for a trivia question, what’s that?
With that, time’s yours.
I like the afternight terminology, gonna borrow that! As far as music not being common on afternight threads, that surprises me a bit, and typically why I am up all hours.
I’m better known as JimsRedhead on twitter, and he’s arguably the biggest Chiefs fan on the planet.
Heh, guess I phrased that poorly, as what I meant was that the comment about the songs isn’t common, as I like to toss up a song or two, or some other sort of interesting stuff. I recognize your Twitter name, though, and glad you found your way here. While I expect things to pick up as the season nears, we don’t always have a “critical mass” to have a regular group on 3rd shift, but I believe that will come, in time. Until then, I’ll be working on keeping my unbroken streak going, because I think the Kingdom community that doesn’t live by USA dayshift hours is badly underserved. As the movie put it, ‘if you build it, they will come’, or so I hope.
In your question you mentioned a connection with Billy Preston and Eric Clapton, other than performing together, is there another one?
Was ironically speaking to Jimmy about another connection involving Eric Clapton earlier today, and that was The Average White Band.
The answer to that is that they both played on Beatles albums. Clapton sat in with George on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on the White Album, and Preston played keyboards on Let It Be. Preston was there at the insistence of George, in fact.
How cool is that!
The connection I was referring to with the Average White Band is they had worked with so many, but had fallen on hard times in the UK, and Eric Clapton bank rolled bringing them to the US in the early 70s. Although not all original members, they still tour, and were at an event just over the weekend with the O’Jays.
Nice. Harrison has another lesser-known connection as well, since he basically bankrolled Monty Python to make ‘Holy Grail’. He was also associated with Badfinger, and IIRC they drew their name from a working title of his, “Badfinger Boogie”.
Love Monty Python! It’s amazing the many layers and help the music family has. I’d liken it to our Chiefs family, and football families as a whole.
Then if you haven’t seen this, I expect you’ll enjoy it:

I feck’n loved it, thank you. Seems I have another song to add to my funeral playlist! Wonder how many attendees will fight to be the last to say fuck before they kick me in the hole, lol.
Glad you did, as my “hobby” of spending my time hoovering up information across a broad range of topics is of considerably less value to me if I can’t share interesting stuff with those who are interested. Unfortunately, it’s here I will bid tonight’s thread adieu, because I’m yawning enough to threaten my jaw from dropping right off. Since I’d hate to follow the example of Baron Unterbheit, I’m going to wash my bedtime meds with the last of my last beer and get some shut-eye.
I have enjoyed talking with you, and if you also enjoyed, I invite you to join us again tomorrow at circa 2300 AG time (US Central), or even earlier during the evening open thread. If Python doesn’t offend you, I think you’ll find the company there rather convivial. Sleep well, in your turn.
Thank you so much. Ttys
I’m up, and always game to talk football, or music for that matter. Enjoyed the Billy Preston stuff btw
Not what I’d call an expert on football, but I have shared my thoughts on the topic, both in articles and comments. If you have some thoughts, by all means share them. I also appreciate your mention of the music, as it isn’t common on the Afternight threads.
“Afternight” is a word I coined myself, BTW, as when you’re up past midnight on a regular basis, what do you call the hours between then and dawn? Night and morning are both used, but that can lead to confusion, so after(mid)night seemed a good companion to afternoon.
No nap for me. Blech.
See you on the morning huddle comrade.
Arund noonish, perhaps. I don’t see myself stayiong up that late or getting up that early.
