FYI Schedule Update: Chiefs Play Bengals At Arrowhead Week 2

This is a follow up on the announcement that the Chiefs will open the NFL season by hosting the Ravens. What that means:

  • The Chiefs will open the season with rematches of the last 3 AFC Championship Games in the first 2 weeks.
  • The first game will be primetime on Thursday of course, then this game will be an evening game. Evening games are considered more prestigious as there are fewer games in the timeslot and thus more people watch each game. Before Andy Reid came to town the Chiefs mostly played at noon, but nowadays they mostly play in the evening when they’re not on primetime.
  • The past couple of seasons the Chiefs played the Bengals later in the year, so it’s unusual for this matchup to happen so early. In fact, playing the two teams who are among the favorites in the AFC so early is a bit weird.
  • As far as the desirability of the schedule goes, there’s good and bad. The good is that the Chiefs will have a rest advantage over the Bengals, which could end up being a key game for the standings by the end of the season. The bad is that after week 2 the Chiefs will only have 6 home games and 9 road games, so there’s going to be a lot of back-to-back road games.

Trying to throw the Chiefs off track by giving them a gauntlet right out of the gate.

Amazon Prime Video gets high quality Bills-Dolphins matchup to start its Thursday night slate

The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins will meet up in Week 2 for the first Thursday night game on the Prime Video package this season. The first Thursday night game, between the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, will be on NBC.

The good: Historically, the Bengals are slow to catch fire, so we may get them when they are still figuring things out.
The better: We finally get to play our main rivals with an advantage, 10 days off.
The not-so-good-if-we-don’t-start-2-0: That would be a big hole to climb out of, not only down to rivals for HFA, but likely down 2 in the division to someone

That means week 3 we play some road conference game

… or perhaps a “meaningless” road non-conference game

Week two is often the first divisional game for teams, so thinking they stuff ours there

Your first point is moot. Every season is different. Every team is trying to figure things out at the beginning of the season, including the Chiefs. Our WR corp is an unknown (again), and our D lost a couple of critical parts (Sneed and Gay). It would be nice to start 2-0, but not critical. We could start 0-2 (we won’t) and still be the team to beat. This team will get the threepeat, and there will be much rejoicing. 😁

Really? I seem to remember a team coached by one Herm Edwards that EVERY YEAR stumbled out of the gate. And I one of one team (two, actually) coached by one Andy Reid that seems ALWAYS ready from the start. As long as the staff is the same, the past is relevant.

Did they look ready to go last season? Maybe they looked ready to you. To me, they looked lost against the lions. They looked like a team not ready for primetime. I guess maybe you missed the opener last season?
Maybe you missed the entire first half of the season? If it wasn’t for our defense we probably don’t even make the playoffs.

Bangles are 6-16-1 in the first 5 games of a season under Zac Taylor.

6-11-1 if you remove his first season when they lost almost every game.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
