Deon Bush Suffers Achilles Injury, Starters Impress in 17-20 Preseason Loss To Cardinals

It always sucks to lose a player to injury in a meaningless game.

Game Summary
The game started fast as the Chiefs recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. A Pacheco run and a PI forced by camp start Thornton set up a quick 1st and goal from the 1, and Mahomes wasted no time to find Jason Brownlee who made a spectacular catch for the touchdown. Arizona responded with a nice drive down the field until Hicks apparently put on his invisibility cloak as Murray threw the ball right to him for the interception.
Apparently that short drive was enough as Minshew came in for the next drive. The offense managed to pick up a couple of first downs, but a fumbled snap and a blown up screen set them back and caused a punt.
The Cardinals put together a good drive, but rookie Jeffrey Bassa made a great play to stop them on 3rd and short and force a field goal. The backup offense responded with a touchdown drive highlighted by Robert Tonyan took a short pass 20 yards and Gardner Minshew running in for the touchdown.
At this point the 3rd stringers came in. Zappe threw an interception despite Royals being surrounded by Cardinals. Arizona took advantage with a screen call against the blitz that went for a 43 yard touchdown. Matt Araiza had a monster 67 yard punt to flip the field after the refs robbed Brownlee of another nice catch. Deon Bush suffered a nasty leg injury that forced him to be carted off the field.
In the 2nd half not much of note happened. Roland-Wallace got an interception thanks to a Tune overthrow and Bailey Zappe threw another interception to end a promising drive. The most exciting play of the 2nd half was Oladukun picking up the snap, running around defenders, then finally finding Presley along the sidelines for the 1st down, although it was unfortunately called back since Presley’s heel was just out of bounds.

I would certainly like to see more of Brownlee. I didn’t even know that guy was taking first-team reps. Tonyan looked really good. I’m very concerned about FAU…he couldn’t seem to get any pressure going, even against 2nd and 3rd string QBs. Losing Bush sucks because our S depth is already not great. Ultimately, Arizona’s 3rd and 4th stringers won this game. WOO PRESEASON
Good possibility that FAU might be a bust. Unfortunately it happens. The important thing is for us to hit on way more picks than we bust on. And if we hit on a later round pick like Gillotte then we end up making up for the early round bust.
