Chiefs Win! Break Out The Practice Lombardi Trophy!

Obviously Arrowhead Guys, this title is a little facetious. But perhaps the Kansas City Chiefs should break out the practice Lombardi Trophy. Because the Chiefs are 2-0 in the practice realm of the NFL, but after watching a couple showings from our beloved red and gold, it’s obvious that the team can still utilize a little motivation towards reaching their lofty goals. Breaking out the Practice Lombardi Trophy does have a Super Bowl Ring to it, but that’s mostly because we were all so ready to have the Kansas City Chiefs back in our lives (at least I was). With football actually back, we have to move on to the coming 2021 regular season and the reality that the rest of the league isn’t going to just get out of the way for our team.
Even with this contest against the Arizona Cardinals, there were signs that it’s definitely still preseason. The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot to improve on, even if they simply want to keep their practice winning steak alive against the Minnesota Vikings next Friday Night to obtain the practice “dynasty” trophy. They have a few things that, as a team, they need to work on every season. Simple things like: tackling, catching the ball, hitting the correct hole, blocking assignments, running efficient routes and being in the right place at the right time, per play design. Just the same freaking basics that we’re posting about in game threads or yelling at the TV or even screaming about at the NFL Stadium. Nevertheless, for the cheap words I wrap it in, it’s still the preseason and the Chiefs still have some time to get it together before the real show begins on Sept 12th, 2021 at 3:25 p.m. in front of an Arrowhead crowd that’s primed and ready for a revenge tour. Before that, I want to make sure and recap this contest in the desert against the Arizona Cardinals, as the Chiefs did pick up the “W“.

The Chiefs did indeed get it done in Arizona, but how did some of the best plays go? Well, with the preseason, a lot of times it’s easier just to look at some of the highlights. So I’ll let you take a peek at some of those of the ones BRaG posted in the Into The Afternight Thread. Before I get to that, I just want to give a shout-out to Direct TV for it being 2021 and them still not having a signal in a storm. And then I want to give another shout out to entitlement and first-world problems–where would blogs be without you? Who knows? When I watched the game, I thought that some Chiefs performed very well at times: Pringle, Hardman, Hughes, Jones, the offensive line, Mahomes and Kelce (as always) and a lot of players on defense–especially Thornhill on that amazing INT snag. Obviously, Mahomes and Kelce didn’t have their best night, but I included them because they showed enough to allow us to see they’re still dominant. One thing I’ll throw out there is a Mitchell Schwartz tweet about Patrick Mahomes spiking the ball on what seemed like a terrible Cassel-esque throw:

In the moment–and in the Gameday Threads, I don’t think many people considered this, as it just seemed like Mahomes was having an off night and seemed a little rusty. Now, if you follow Schwartz on Twitter, you’ll know that him and his brother are both excellent at talking about and dissecting the game. That doesn’t mean Schwartz’ B.S. excuse is a good one. I’m neutral about it. However, you could make your dog tilt it’s proverbial head sideways if you think about it. For me, this whole game was kind of like that. We had some really quality Chiefs moments. Splash plays. Rookies living up to their potential. There’s “the-who?” players making you take note of their names, like Derrick Gore and Daurice Fountain. Or the “still-here” guys like Marcus Kemp, Andrew Wylie, Ben Niemann and Gehrig Dieter somehow finding little ways to still be here. Having analysis from people like the Schwartz brothers explain it all into logical existence when things like NFL replays exist. But that’s part of the joy of preseason gameday threads, it’s reactive, and it doesn’t give a shit about logic in the moment–it only wants another touchdown or turnover–it wants to know “what the fuck was that?”–it wants to know why that player is still on the team. It’s the Gameday comments, and here are some of our most recent examples. Let’s roll:

Well the starters on defense are looking good.
In any gameday threads you’re going to get a ton of questions. Player names. Rants of all sizes–from one word to block paragraphs. Even though we’re all still in preseason mode, a lot of our comments were on point. This piece would be bloated like Charger expectations in the offseason if I included all of the ones I want to throw in this, but I wanted to stop and piggyback on what Tony Sommer said, “Sofa King Good!” and it’s a great way to describe the offensive line play, but “so fucking much better!” also works. Even with all the preseason talk, I think it’s important to note that seeing good play in the trenches in the preseason is always a positive sign, but still might lead to fool’s gold once the blitzing starts really happening in the regular season. Conclusion
Well obviously, for a freaking preseason game–this recap took way too long to create, but I kind of like including the game day journey in these posts. With the Kansas City Chiefs, we all take it so serious, and we get into the mission of the journey to win it all: the Super Bowl. However, I think we need to try and enjoy the little journeys along the way. Which of these Chiefs receivers are going to take the number two spot? Who is going to be CEH’s backup running back? Who is going to be among the starting front five on the OL? Who is going to be a better CB — Baker or Hughes (a good problem to have!) Who is going to pour the Gatorade [Ed. Note: Hank Stram aided part of the development of the product when he coached the Gators.] on Andy Reid? The point is that it’s the preseason, and even though we won the practice Lombardi, I’m still very much looking forward to one last preseason game, so the Chiefs can put it all together. Win that one, and we’re talking practice dynasty…

One thing being left out of the fullback analysis is that a hidden benefit of a 3-4 D is that it means there are more LBs available for ST duties, and that’s a good thing for ST play. How do you make up for that shortfall in a 4-3? Carry a FB, such as Sherman, even if you don’t use him much on O.

I was a HUGE Mike Hughes fan coming out of UCF. Burton made 2 adjustment catches that showed me he can be a factor in this offense. Again, look at the passes and then look at what what he did with those.
I didn’t expect him to appear as relentless. I remember watching this, but I had kind of forgot about the addition until the 49ers preseason game. He surprised me in a similar way Sherman did when we first traded for him.

I do believe in the golden rule though, I don’t always use it… but I believe in it.

I think that’s the best Thompson has consistently looked. I like seeing that kind of effort out of players in these do or die scenarios. I wrote about Fountain in this piece.

But Gore really impressed me with this aggression/speed and I was amazed that Fountain was so reminiscent of Dwayne Bowe in the same way Powell looks like Watkins. Both exciting performances. Thompson did it against better competition (debatably), but to me Gore looked just a touch better because he came out of nowhere. It was a true preseason splash game. Like Bobby Sippio or Casey J. Printers. It would have been awesome for Hard Knocks. Will Gore make the team? I have no idea, but I can’t wait to see him against the Vikings now.

So, if a dozen teams end up 3-0 in Practice Games, then you’ll have to award ALL of them a Lombardi Practice Trophy, in the interest of fair play
Seriously though, I urge each and every one out there to please not take the Chiefs or the NFL too seriously … bear in mind that it’s entertainment, similar to wrestling but without a pre-determined result (as far as we know,) and remember that the entertainers (players, coaches, etc) are human (yes, that includes Mahomes, Kelce and the rest)
Bottom line: if the team loses, don’t lose it … don’t go off the deep end because IT’S JUST A GAME and no matter how you slice it, that’s what it is
Do enjoy the games, the plays, the highs and even the lows … shout with joy at the INTs and pump your fists for the TDs, but remember what and who are REALLY TRULY important: family and friends

But–and it’s a big BUT! Like–Oh my God, Becky – BIG. Football is an escape, so it is supposed to be taken seriously! Very seriously!!! NFL gambling is now legal, fantasy football is huge and like a money factory for people that take advantage of fanatic passion. So it’s very real, but not real–like the preseason. I say just love the Chiefs (or your ______) and be thankful it’s football season again. Be grateful we have Patrick Mahomes and our tough arguments are about Fortson vs. Bell or Hardman vs. Pringle vs. Doritos. Whatever bag of chips (or tube) you want to celebrate “all that” with–just make sure you’re celebrating some of the time. It’s okay to rant and to break some fancy shit once in awhile about a backup OL play, but just remember to smile about it later–or don’t–football is back!
