Game Summary

1st Quarter

In a game that served as a test of the suddenly improving Chiefs’ defense, they got put on the field immediately and showed up with a 3 and out (although partially thanks to Dak missing a wide open Gallup after the defender fell down). The Chiefs took the ball and, as they’ve been doing all season, moved the ball down the field with runs and short pass plays, ending with an Andy Reid special touchdown run with a direct snap to Kelce. But Butker missed the extra point, so it was 6-0 Chiefs.

The next drive was even more dominant by the defense, as the Cowboys lost yards on their first two plays before Frank Clark got a sack and forced a fumble, which Chris Jones recovered. Despite the good field position the Chiefs failed to get a first down, largely due to a play that was close to being interference and then a Josh Gordon drop. But Butker made the field goal, so it became 9-0 Chiefs.

On the next drive the defense finally gave up a first down on a play where the defense looked a bit confused. The Cowboys built on that to continue moving the ball, including a big play on a kind of trick play that faked a reverse to Dak on a direct snap to Pollard. But the defense managed to hold in the red zone, limiting the damage and maintaining a 9-3 Chiefs lead.

The Chiefs ended the first quarter by finally getting a big play, this time a 37 yard reception by Pringle.

2nd Quarter

After the big play to Pringle Hardman was inches away from scoring, but put the Chiefs on the 1 yard line, seting up and easy touchdown for CEH on the Mahomes pitch for the touchdown. CEH got a taunting penalty on the play, but Butker made the 48 yard extra point anyway to put the Chiefs up 16-3.

On the next drive the Cowboys were able to move the ball, but it didn’t look particularly easy. For example, a reception that was inches from being picked by Willie Gay. And a 3rd and 19 conversion thanks to a hands to the face penalty. After seemingly hundreds of 3rd downs (ok fine, I think it was 4) the defense did finally manage to get off the field, but a nice punt put the Chiefs on their own 8.

The Chiefs got a big play to Hill to get out of their own endzone, but a drop from Hill on 3rd down forced the first punt of the game from the Chiefs. But the defense continued to show up, forcing the 3rd 3 and out of the game. The Chiefs got the ball back, but a hold and then an unsportsmanlike conduct on Trey Smith gave the Chiefs a 2nd and 29, which was too much even for Mahomes to overcome, so Dallas got the ball right back with 2:39 left in the half.

But it was no problem for the defense, who forced the 4th 3 and out of the game because of pressure from Jones and Clark.

A bad punt and offsetting penalties later the Chiefs got the ball with 1:43 left on their own 45, but Mahomes got strip-sacked and the Cowboys got the ball right back. Thankfully the defense continued showing up, this time in the form of an absolute clutch interception by Ward to end the half.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the 2nd half, and after starting hot Kelce dropped an easy pass that went right to the hands of the Cowboys defender for an interception. Despite the short field the defense managed to hold on and the Cowboys were forced to settle for a field goal to make it 16-6.

The Chiefs offense continued to struggle as a sack made it 3rd and 14 which was a bit too long to convert. But the defense came up big again, forcing yet another 3 and out on a great read by Willie Gay on 3rd down. This time the Chiefs offense moved through the Dallas defense like a hot knife through butter down the the Cowboys’ 35, but then stalled as Mahomes faced lots of pressure again. Butker made the 53 yard attempt look automatic, putting the Chiefs up 19-6.

On the ensuing drive the Cowboys actually started moving the ball and making it look easy, getting the ball to the Chiefs’ 21 to end the quarter.

4th Quarter

The quarter changed and the defense suddenly remembered how to play, as they forced the Cowboys to move backwards and forcing another field goal to make it 19-10. On the next drive the Chiefs had a similar drive, moving down the field quickly, until suddenly they couldn’t. On 4th and 2 at the Dallas 33 Reid made the questionable call of kicking the field goal instead of going for it, which Butker unusually missed.

Again the defense showed they’re suddenly reliable, as they forced (say it with me) a 3 and out as Chris Jones got his 4th sack of the game on 3rd down to force the punt.

With nearly 8 minutes left in the game, the Chiefs offense expertly burned clock as they slowly but surely moved the ball down the field. Butker did a surprise punt to pin the Cowboys deep, and suddenly the Cowboys only had 2:35 and one timeout trying to overcome a 10 point deficit from their own 3.

The Cowboys did manage to move the ball down the field, but Sneed got the pick off a Jones tipped pass to seal the victory for Kansas City!

That defense is nice! The O is streaky but serviceable. Got to get Mahomes to not forget the short and intermediate routes.

Hope we keep Ingram for next year. Our line came alive once he joined.

I didn’t think I’d say this this year, but I was impressed, and confident, in the defense.

Four weeks ago, I think they were historically bad. Now, they are simply the strength of the team. 3 of the last 4 wins are because of the D, not in spite of them

HUGE win – could have dropped out of first during our bye – the pressure is now on the rest of the division to win.
