An idea was presented earlier this off-season on how we, as a community can honor our most beloved Kansas City Chiefs players and coaches. So today we are releasing the first ballot of twenty names to be selected upon by you.

You will get five selections, and once the top five names have been tallied we will release the inaugural 2020 Arrowhead Guys Hall of Chiefs class. Each of the five inaugural winners will have an article dedicated to their achievements while being a member of the Chiefs.

Below is the first ballot of twenty names. Next year we will add five more names to replace the winners and continue this tradition.

This poll is now closed.

I voted Hunt, Stram, Dawson, Thomas. for my 5th vote, i voted Buck Buchanan.

i think of the defensive juggernaut of the 60s, Buchanan & Bell will have to go in first, before Willie Lanier. Buchanan was the AFL #1 overall pick in 1963, so i picked him b/c he lived up to it.

Tony Gonzalez is a cool pick, but he isnt a Chief. in his mind, he is a Falcon. so be it. he played 12 years in KC, and 5 years in ATL. has 1 postseason win to show for it. he has something he is holding back that he doesnt like about KC. so we shouldnt reward him more. lets get the 60s Superbowl more recognition over people who didnt want to be here.

Quite a few Chiefs played elsewhere. Granted, I love those that played their entire career here but JC was a Bronco and DJ was a Raider. Do we withhold votes for them down the line because of that fact? Lenny started in Pittsburgh and Stram coached in NO – are they not considered? I think several are being too harsh on Tony G.

BDChiefsFan

Tony’s attitude is what separates him from the other guys.

JC was emotionally hurt (Chiefs doctors told him to retire), so he spited the Chiefs by signing with the only team that wanted him. he was a husk of himself, and retired after a year.

Same with DJ. he got cut, and he signed with the only team that wanted him. no hard feelings there. mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

Tony? he wanted out from the Chiefs to win a championship. not a good start, but ok. sometimes players want a ring. but after he retired, there were numerous incidents he showed his preference for the Falcons.

Tony Gonzalez downplays his Chiefs run, says Falcons made his career

this wasnt some heat of the moment thing. this was years after his retirement.

i think this is when Chiefs fans finally tuned out. before that, they took the slights in stride. but this was the final straw.

Tony Gonzalez is a Chief like Joe Montana Marcus Allen is a Chief.

Looking at the results it’s obvious that there are 4 no-brainers listed. If the 5th one had been there as well there wouldn’t be any drama.

Neck and neck race for #5 between Gonzalez and Lanier right now…

EAFOX

Do we have a tie breaker?

MasterChief
MasterChief

A good tie breaker… which one has a Super Bowl ring?

KCChef

Dang … I Voted for Both … ; )

EAFOX

Are people prevented from voting twice? Hopefully so cause, when I came back to this article, it went from the results back to the list of candidates. I hope nobody took this so seriously that they would try and stuff the ballot box.

tony gonzalez was a falcon

They made his career

And he made our offense, for a little while.

Will one of the Tony’s show up at their hotel room to let them know they made it (assuming they are still living)?

Should statistical leaders like Jamaal Charles, Derrick Johnson, Dwayne Bowe (?) be included automatically?

Should we include only players/coaches that have concluded their NFL careers?

Btw, I think the AGHOC a GREAT idea!

As much as I don’t like like the guy (and it’s a LOT), Carl Peterson deserves to be on this list long before Nick Lowery.

Berserker
Berserker

Or definitely before Jack Steadman. Peterson literally had to clean up the mess that Steadman made.

I’d agree with Peterson before Steadman, but the argument can be made that Lowery should be on there before Stenerud.

EAFOX

Both before Lin Elliot

The next list might be the five guys who replace the five who get elected.

Who DIDN’T vote for Lamar? Literally wouldn’t have a team otherwise, wouldn’t have about half the NFL. Wouldn’t have the NFL the way it is now. He is an obvious first ballot HoFer for any pro football or general sports hall of fame. Hell, he should be in the HoF for the Pats, Broncs, Raiders, Chargers, Bills, etc.. as well

I was aligned with 4 out of 5 of the top voted guys (Lamar, Hank, Lenny & Derrick). The only person I voted for who I figured was probably a 2nd/3rd year vote was Christian Okoye, but I did it cause I love that fuckin’ guy.
I was really tempted to put in for Joe Delaney too, but decided to go old school & maybe put him in my vote next year instead.

Berserker
Berserker

I voted Delaney. Just seemed like if you’re gonna put him in at all, he should be in the first class. Figured a foundation needs a character statement.

EAFOX

When I made my original list – Mahomes, Tony, Marty, Len, and Lamar – the only one that I did not contemplate replacing with another name was Lamar. He has to be on the list. I know you disagree but Mahomes was the next one that I was firm about keeping on the list. The last two that I cut was DT and Will Shields.

Tarkus

Same 4 of 5, with my last vote going to Marty.

I didn’t vote for Lamar. I agree he’s a HOF guy, but I’m not voting him in over players. Lamar deserves all the credit he gets, but it’s hard for me to forget what it was like to be a Chiefs fan in the late 70s and the 80s before Marty and Carl arrived, or really any of those years between Stram and Marty. Lamar really let this franchise become a joke during those years. It’s like putting a player in the HOF who was one of the worst at his position for 5 seasons. Lamar started strong and ended strong, but in the middle I think he let too much go wrong for too long. So he’s not a first ballot HOFer in my eyes.

Glad to see you following up on this, though I’m disappointed that you didn’t include Mahomes as a nominee since he WAS nominated. He deserves to be on the first ballot of our hall of fame and you know that he would get in if he was. Why are current players excluded when there is no way this is going to last long enough for them to be able to get on after they stop playing? I demand accountability on this gross mishandling of the issue and place my write in vote for Mahomes here.

DenverDonkeyHater
DenverDonkeyHater

Mahomes seems like the exception. How many people would for Mathieu even though he had half a good season (which ended in a super bowl), even though Berry had a far better career with the chiefs?

Brylowman
Brylowman

Right, Mahomes is the only active player that should be on the inaugural ballot. But my fear is that if he’s not on this one will he have to wait until he’s done playing to be nominated? This isn’t canton it’s just a website and there’s no reason to exclude great active players.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

This is a dumb take. It was dumb in the original article too. Of course, if something happened and Mahomes never played another snap (damn you for even making me consider such a thing), he is still getting in the ring of honor, no argument there.

But the hall of fame is reserved for players/coaches who are no longer active. 1 yr for the Chiefs ring of honor, 5 years for the NFL HOF. I was very glad they had no active players on the list.

Brylowman
Brylowman

Reality check. This ISN’T the hall of fame. It’s who is the greatest ever which includes the present.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

Its the AG Hall of Chiefs. Literally no where does it say what you just said.

Brylowman
Brylowman

This is not the first article about this. And nowhere does it say only retired players either. As I’ve said below, why do we need the same rules as Canton or the ring of honor when this a website and not as likely to still be around when Mahomes retires?

EAFOX CHIEFS HALL OF FAME

This is the mother thread and literally the first player nominated is Mahomes.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

Yeah I read it. Hence why I said “it was dumb in the original article too”

EAFOX

I included Mahomes simply because one could already make the argument that he is one of the five greatest Chiefs after only two seasons. How many MVP seasons, Super Bowl rings, and franchise and league records will be set before he is finally eligible for our Hall of Fame? I think he belongs but can get on board and roll with our results without him.

Brylowman
Brylowman

Right, Mahomes is the greatest QB the league has ever seen (if you disagree your wrong), but we can’t honor him because he’s still playing? Lord willing he will be playing til he’s in his forties, are you then going to wait 5 years to let him in? Why are we using these rules? This is the internet, the home of instant gratification not of waiting 20 years for something to happen.

NovaChiefs
NovaChiefs

The initial 5 simply HAVE to be from the 1969 team. They started what we have today. Everyone else can wait.

DenverDonkeyHater
DenverDonkeyHater

Somewhat agree. I voted for DT though.

vvet818

Exactly what I did as well, 4 old timers and DT.

EAFOX

Hard to ignore the old-timers but only voted for Len myself. I would imagine next year will be mostly old-timers for me.

MasterChief

Totally agreed.
