Game Summary

The game started in butt-puckering fashion with Patrick Mahomes’ first attempt being picked off but ultimately, and correctly, it was overturned for hitting the ground. The Chiefs put together a solid drive capped off by the famed tight end shovel pass to Travis Kelce for a score. Not to be outdone the defense showed up with a Chris Jones strip-sack of Ryan Tannehill on 3rd down recovered by Tanoh Kpassagnon. Despite some remarkable plays, including a would-be Kelce touchdown, the drive was thwarted by penalties and the Chiefs settled for a field goal. The quarter ended with the Chiefs up 10-0.

The Chiefs opened the second quarter with a drive stalled by near misses to both Hill and Watkins that could have both likely ended up in the end zone before Dustin Colquitt came in and shanked a 26 yard punt to the Titans. And then…then the…I don’t know what happened. Simply put Charvarius Ward got burned for a 73 yard reception to Kalif Raymond. Three plays later and the Titans were in the endzone with a 9 yard pass to something called a Firkser to pull the Titans within three of the Chiefs. The Chiefs looked to respond and were systemically driving down the field when Damien Williams fumbled the ball which Tennessee returned for a touchdown. Former friend Ryan Succup missed the PAT putting the Titans up 13-10. On the subsequent Chiefs drive the strangest of oddities occurred with 3 injuries as Hill, Schwartz, and Schwartz’s replacement Martinez Rankins were all injured on consecutive plays. While Hill and Schwartz look to be ok, Rankins appears to be done for the season. The Chiefs ended the drive with a field goal to tie the game at 13 before the half.

The Titans opened the second half with a rash of their own penalties that resulted in a punt and continued the trend, extending the Chiefs drive with a costly holding call on a 3rd down incompletion. The Chiefs capitalized on the Titans mistake when Patrick Mahomes floated an 11 yard rainbow to Hill in the end zone. In a game of matching efforts, it was Harrison Butker who missed the PAT this time. The Titans wasted no responding as Derrick Henry scampered 68 yards for a touchdown to put the Titans on top 20-19. Tyreek Hill dropped a pass on 3rd and 1 that hit him in the hands but the Chiefs we able to convert on 4th down with a 10 yard pass to Damien Williams and the Chiefs retook the lead on a 43 yard field goal from Harrison Butker. With the Titans driving the clock expired on the 3rd quarter.

The Chiefs defense stepped up with another Chris Jones sack that ultimately led to a punt. The Chiefs answered with another classic Mahomes highlight reel play where he lobbed a jump pass to Mecole Hardman who streaked into the endzone for a 63 yard score. But the Titans weren’t done yet as they responded with a 10 play 75 yard drive capped off by a 1 yard Henry score. The Chiefs moved down the field on the back of a 39 yard strike to Tyreek Hill but on the following set of downs Hill had two passes hit him in the hands that he didn’t haul in and the Chiefs had to settle for three. On the following drive the Chiefs defense made a stand as Frank Clark sacked Tannehill on 3rd down and the Chiefs took possession when the Titans went for it on 4th and 17 and failed to convert. However a botched snap on the pursuing field goal attempt gave Tennessee the ball back with good field position and the Titans sliced through the Chiefs defense going 61 yards in 58 seconds to score a go ahead touchdown and converted the following 2 point conversation. The Chiefs moved into the edge of field goal position but the game winning kick was blocked. Titans win 35-32 despite being dominated in every statistical category.

Hi AG.

Can I suggest an alternate thread title?

“Andy Reid predictably calls screen to ice game on 3rd & short, which was predictably shut down by the defense, which predictably cost them the game.”

It’s not as if this is the first time Reid has pulled this nonsense. I hated it when he pulled that crap with Alex at QB. When you have Mahomes, it’s even worse to call that play. If the defense guesses screen, which they will if they know Andy Reid at all, the QB has no other choices than fall down or throw it away.

ProfChesterTQ
ProfChesterTQ

Mahomes just needs to politely tell Reid to stick his late game OVERconservatism in his ball cap and smoke it after the game.
(He’ll get there; ala Tom Brady and Peyton Manning; He’s still green behind the ears)

Maybe add a little Hasselbeck Swagger to his breakfast cereal…

Oh great the Cowboys are on prime time tonight. Sure don’t see enough of them.

Certainly have seen enough of the Chiefs for one day ;(

Oops 🙁

Fumbles, penalties and special teams. Special teams has screwed this team in almost every game. Fair catch at the three….Colquit trying to pass when he just should have fell on the ball…..penalties on almost every kick off return. Two successive special teams miscues. This team does not focus when they should. That is why they’ve lost to teams with less talent than them.

Just my rant….

Oh yea….Erving should not be on this team.

But so glad the defense showed up today..

Only cuz Foles got hurt.

TNCHIEFS

This wasn’t a hard-fought slugfest. Nor did the Chiefs get shamed out of Nashville for not showing up. But it was an entirely avoidable loss. That’s the hard part for me.

Yeah, that game ended like our entire team was suffering from Diarrhea !

Fact: If Reid called a run on that 3rd & 2 and it got stuffed, the posts would all bemoan having the best QB on earth & not letting him try to get it. “Conservative Andy, playing not to lose”.
Gotta stop the fumbling.

SuperMegaChief

Exactly.

No kidding. Kareem Hunt runs with the ball dipped in gorilla glue and wrapped in duct tape.

I know….woulda coulda shoulda.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Let’s not simply gloss over the fact of the play they called. There are probably 25 better plays in that playbook than a screen to Blake Bell on 3rd and 2.

Tyrone

25 is very conservative.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Have to be conservative around here or someone will demand you to list them or something nutty like that.

Jdklks
Jdklks

EXACTLY.

ProfChesterTQ
ProfChesterTQ

The only problem I have with the play call was that Mahomes was instructed not to throw it unless his guy was 100% open… Mahomes had Hill (I believe) on a corner route in tight coverage, saw it, but took the sack instead of risking the time-stopping incompletion on a tight throw. (even though that completion would have been a game-ending TD)

If you’re going to play that scared with the pass, then RUN !

(ie Tom Brady and Bill Belichick take that throw deep in an attempt to step on the neck of their opponent;
instead of the fingers-crossed approach that the opponent runs out of time to come back)

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

A one receiver screen play is just as conservative, it’s also even less likely to work.

I agree with this comment

EAFOX

People keep saying that this is the same old story year after year

Mahomes got us into game tying FG position with just over 20 seconds left in the game. Which other past quarterback could have done that?

chiefsfan1974
chiefsfan1974

I think the same old story is this team can only seem to have only one good side of the ball and can never be balanced or close between offense and defense. I just hope they are not going to turn Pat into the next Marino.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Outcome, my friend, outcome.

Sudden
Sudden

People keep saying that championship teams don’t lose these games.

Those same people seem to forget that last year the Patriots lost at Tennessee in week 10 and went on to win a championship.

EAFOX

We needed that reminder.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Yeah, the Patriots. The Chiefs are just like the Patriots. Wait, how do I enable sarcasm font on this site?!

EAFOX

I have listened for years as many bash Fisher and wanted him gone. Look at what we have with Erving. I can understand frustration but lets not get rid of the entire team before we have someone better to replace them.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Until he got hurt today, Rankin was likely better than Erv.

EAFOX

I probably agree with that assessment.

MasterChief
MasterChief

Agreed. I’d move Erving to G where he belongs.

EAFOX

Guess I am always going to lean towards the positive as some here are always going to lean to the negative. This team can win a Super Bowl as long as we have Mahomes as long as some others show up which is a possibility. Our defense can stop the run even though they did not today. Winchester is normally reliable. Running backs can hold on to the ball.

Jayhawks_6872
Jayhawks_6872

Seriously it’s not even close to how good mahomes is, he jumped in the air and was able to deliver a strike to Hardman for a TD, no other qb can do what mahomes can do, we can still compete for a sb this year

NobodyLikesDonkys
NobodyLikesDonkys

Agree with you but running backs holding onto the ball seems to be a real challenge for this team

Jdklks

This team is one and done. What would you like to bet right now?

Time to re-frame this negativity. It’s more fun to believe than to doubt and I still believe in Mahomes and Reid.

Jayhawks_6872
Jayhawks_6872

Oh no! We suffered our first true bad loss of the season ! The seasons over pack it up boys! Just curious did you believe our season was over when we started 1-5 a couple years back, and fuck that was with Alex smith and we still won out. Calm down in mahomes we trust

KCRowdy
KCRowdy

Calm down in mahomes we trust

Obviously so does this defense.

NHChiefsfan
NHChiefsfan

Aww…do you still believe that Reid can actually win a Superbowl? Do you still believe in the tooth fairy too?

Mahomesisgreat
Mahomesisgreat

We are in every game. We screw up and fumble but don’t quit, and we still have Mahomes. There is still hope.

EAFOX

Let me be clear – It is okay to be critical of bad plays but it is ridiculous to castigate good players. If Hill drops a pass, get on him about needing to pull that one in. Calling him a bum that needs to be cut is asinine.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Not sure I’ve seen that hot of a take yet. He did have some bad drops, as did Sammy and DRob…which really hurt.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

did anyone say Hill needs to be cut? If so I missed that and yeah thats insane. He dropped a few but I think all of them were after he got shook up.

EAFOX

Yep – way back in the thread. I cannot stand Cam Erving but I do not want to see him go until we get someone better. Every player – even great ones – make some bad plays.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Nobody is saying cut Hill what are you talking about?

Pelletman
Pelletman

All we need is to cut back on the penalties/turnovers, the Special Teams to just not fuck up, and get a top running back and we would be favored against anyone.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Lol, we just lost to the TITANS…nobody is favoring us against any team that is remotely worth a damn.

Jayhawks_6872
Jayhawks_6872

You’re right just like how NO shouldn’t be favored for any of their games right? By your logic the saints should miss the playoffs

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

Falcons are bad, but everyone knows division games can be fluky as the teams know each other so well. The Chiefs dont have that excuse today

EAFOX

How about when Romeo and the Chiefs beat the Packers?

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

dude. bring up points from recent NFL history. Also, you might note that the Packers did not win the super bowl that year. They did not even make the NFC championship game.

EAFOX

Guess I should not mention the Chiefs destroying the Steve Young 49ers on MNF

hmills110
hmills110

Was that the 44-to-9er game?

Yep – Chiefs ran them into the ground.

Dude the falcons bounced the saints at home, the falcons before this was 1-7, we lost on the road, it was an awful loss, but against a team that is far more worth a damn than the falcons

Jdklks

All I said is nobody is going to favor us against good teams. Feel free to direct my attention to the spreads the rest of the year when we play top teams and are favored.

I wonder what happened to the team that got blown out at Tennessee in week 10 last year…

They have a coach that holds them accountable for mistakes.

Sudden

Any given Sunday

The difference is the Patriots last year got beaten like the drum at Arrowhead before the game start. We beat ourselves with mistakes.

This season ain’t over and we’re done with the bane of our existence in the AFC South until at least the playoffs.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Special teams was atrocious today. Special teams has not played well this season. Penalties and more penalties. Has Toubs time passed?

ProfChesterTQ
ProfChesterTQ

penalties on returns is an every kick event throughout the NFL, not just the Chiefs…

now the FG snaps… and sitting there and watching both guys on the end run by you without barely moving… that seems to be a Chiefs problem…

I’m talking about THIS guy…

This team will scrounge out 9-10 wins and do just enough to give us hope come January only to disappoint us again. We have the best QB in the league and not a damn thing will change when it matters that’s what this loss tells me

EAFOX

See you next year.

EAFOX

We have been spoiled by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. We expect every game to be a dominant win. Some of you sound like little kids after losing a board game.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

we are 2-4 in our last 6 games. Thats bad. Its not like this is our first loss of the year.

EAFOX

I agree that it is bad but people who want to give up on the team after a loss are a bunch of morons.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Give up on championship aspirations =\= give up on team. Conflating the two is disingenuous.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Now there’s some perspective. 2-4 is not a good stretch of games no matter how you “glass half full” it.

Sudden

But 2-2 over our last 4.

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is enticing but what they conceal is vital.

NovaChiefs
NovaChiefs

6-4 over our last ten, too.

SuperMegaChief
SuperMegaChief

And we have been very injured but managed to stay competitive during this time. I’m not sure why everyone thought we were going to destroy the NFL this season. It was always going to be a fight. Injuries change everything.

Jdklks
Jdklks

“Destroy the NFL”…how about “improve on last year”? You know, like every fan should hope their team does every year. We’re not doing that, unless we win out and make the super bowl. Are you betting on that outcome? If improvement isn’t what you were hoping for, I’d re-assess the way you fan.

SuperMegaChief
SuperMegaChief

I don’t know what to tell you. You seem bound and determined to embrace the negativity. We played a crappy game. It happens. Unless you can see the future, your pessimistic assessment is just a blind assumption based on your current emotional state. Your guess is just as good as mine about what happens next. I’m not being a homer, just keeping it real.

Jdklks
Jdklks

You can be an optimistic person and I can be a pessimistic person, yes. Is any team mathematically eliminated? I don’t think so…that means that all 32 teams can still win the super bowl. Sometimes optimism is “realer” than pessimism, and vice versa.

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

Titans were more injured than us, just like the colts. It didnt matter we managed to offset that with ungood play.

probablyamistake
probablyamistake

Nah, we just thought this year would be different. Hopefully the end result is, but right now, it looks the same as it ever was.

Jdklks
Jdklks

So you’re not tired of the same outcome every year, even with a generational talent behind center? Okay, to each his own!

Pelletman
Pelletman

How is it the same outcome every year? Last year we had a first round bye and made the AFC Championship game. Literally an improvement.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

We will not have home field advantage. We almost certainly will not have a first round bye. So literally already a regression in results from last year.

Jdklks
Jdklks

Exactly. Unless we win out and/or make the Super Bowl, we’ve regressed this year. It’s difficult for some to understand, apparently.

Pelletman
Pelletman

It’s not difficult…and I just made your same argument and somehow you’re on the opposite side.

Jdklks
Jdklks

I guess I misread your comment as supporting EA’s position. My bad if so.

Dave B.
Dave B.

Do you understand that every year 31 teams do NOT win a Super Bowl? That’s the reality of being a fan IN GENERAL, not just a Chiefs’ fan.

Pelletman
Pelletman

Unless we make the Super Bowl, then you’re wrong.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

sure. That will be the tasty crow Ive ever eaten. But nothing about this season or Andy Reid’s history suggests that will happen

Jdklks
Jdklks

It’s also disingenuous because he completely ignored me saying “or” go to the super bowl. WE CAN STILL IMPROVE ON LAST YEAR BY GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL. Nobody is saying differently. Will we? Not looking like it, but maybe.

Edit: meant to reply to you one sub thread up.

Pelletman
Pelletman

You didn’t say that in the comment I replied to.

EAFOX

Then the Patriots have regressed since going 17-0

Jdklks
Jdklks

I think everyone can agree that the Patriots get the benefit of the doubt considering their history compared to ours. Additionally, the use of “and/or” means the disjunctive “or” by itself is enough to make the point. So, 18-1 Pats improved when they won the Super Bowl(s) because they matched their record OR won the super bowl. See?

hmills110
hmills110

They don’t teach logic in school. “Or” includes both, and nobody knows what “and” really means, either.

Jdklks
Jdklks

“Or” includes both insofar as either is sufficient. And requires both conditions to be true. That’s not the point I was making though. The use of and/or is expansive enough that it should be self-explanatory.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

That was 12 years ago. A very disingenuous argument on your part. And they have also won 6 super bowls in the past 20 years. The Chiefs have won how many?

EAFOX

And they were not the ultra dominant team each year they won. I do not judge Mahomes on what Alex Smith, Trent Green, and Joe Montana failed to do. Until he retires, our 9-7 playoff team has just as good of chance as winning as our 15-1 playoff team.

hmills110
hmills110

KC’s better on the road, or has been. Their homefield playoff record is verschizzle, no matter how hard people push home-field advantage. Especially late in the year when the sun is low and they insist on putting the sun behind the ball for our receivers.

EAFOX

Year one under Mahomes – loss in AFC Championship Game
Year two under Mahomes – unknown

I do not compare this team to any from the past.

Pelletman
Pelletman

Seriously, even outside of Mahomes and Reid with the Chiefs…we LITERALLY got better last year.

hmills110
hmills110

Reid is a “steal wins” kind of coach, always compensating for having soft offensive lines. Except when for no good reason he’ll make the play depend on the LT holding up against a DE that’s been pushing him around all day. Less finesse. More basic football. Straight up hard running and play-action passing. He’s got a classically good QB-WR trio. He should pair that with pro set, Mahomes under center, old-fashioned football. Make the D pick its poison.

EAFOX

Andy prefers to have lighter, more mobile lineman. Great for the screen game and such. Yes, he should not gamble on one crucial play that his lighter linemen will push back a stronger defensive player. Thus, his 3rd and 2 call with Mahomes.

starry1

I watched the chiefs rewind. Andy is upset, as he should be. Schwartz looks good, I don’t think he misses any time.

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Andy better be upset with the reflection in the mirror. He is responsible for preparing this team…and it was NOT prepared today. Again.

WTF_Chiefs
WTF_Chiefs

SO. MUCH. THIS,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

will Andy change anything? Actually maybe chew someone’s ass and light a fire? I doubt it.

EAFOX

It is immaterial whether you are 15-1 or 9-7 as long as you make the playoffs. Mahomes gives us a chance to win any game. Last franchise quarterback we could say that about was an 137 year old Joe Montana. Yes, the defense and special teams need to contribute and we need to quit fumbling the ball but each game is a new one. I still like our chances of advancing deep into the playoffs.

hmills110
hmills110

I think the talent is there, but the coaches are cowards.. You can’t be afraid to lose. Our coaches are afraid to lose. They’re not coaching like a hungry team. They coach like they’ve never missed a meal in their lives, and Andy Reid is emblematic.

vvet818

I agree with you but the play calling at the end was terrible

EAFOX

Giving the ball to Mahomes on third and two is not a bad call. I am sure that Andy did not call for a bad snap or a blocked FG attempt

SCKSChief
SCKSChief

Giving it to Mahomes and making the play call a TE screen to Blake Bell IS a bad call.

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

The real problem is it looks like we lost one of our better defensive players and we really only have hope of getti g one back. The offensive side should get better with some OL returning, but probably not much better due to how good the offense has been. Personally I would make 31 the starting RB over fumblin, bumblin 26 not sure it would do much though.

In the end the defense and ST needs to improve but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
