Saturday O/T: Lil’ Titans Defensive Preview

I apologize for not getting a full review in, I had some issues with a squirrel taking out my internet for a few days but hopefully, that won’t happen again going forward. The Chiefs are going to welcome Patrick Mahomes back to the lineup with a better and healthier team than when he left it and I think we are going to see a determined and surgical quarterback ready to re-enter the MVP race.

The Titans just lost Malcolm Butler for the rest of the season and I think that will force the Titans to play more zone than they may want to. You don’t want a backup player forced into a situation where he has to play man coverage on Tyreek Hill or Sammy Watkins. As a lot of you may have seen on my twitter feed the Chiefs, even with Matt Moore, eat up zone coverage. The Titans don’t have the team speed to keep up with the Chiefs receivers and this is an example of the Panthers exploiting the zone and speed advantage.

I have a voice-over on this play and I go into detail about how the Panthers attacked the right side of the field with trip formations. Trips really give the Titans trouble and the Chiefs could exploit that with the weapons they have. The Titans possess the 20th ranked passing defense in the NFL with Malcolm Butler and now without him, they will struggle to keep the Chiefs off the board. It seems like every week someone if going over 100-yards receiving against the Titans. Running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends alike have all registered a 100-yard game against the Titans and I think the Chiefs could get Travis Kelce his second of the season utilizing play-action to get him open.

Kelce has been a chain mover lately and there’s nothing wrong with that, but he wants to contribute more than that to this team and Mahomes is going to look to get him some big plays. Lastly, the Chiefs play another team that is very good against the run. Ranked 3rd in DVOA against the run, their front seven is physical and fills holes well and pursues. They will be without Jurrell Casey up the middle but they will still be a force in the run defense.

The Titans have a few safeties that are great in run support in Logan Ryan and Kenny Vacarro. They come up and are not afraid to hit. The Chiefs will have to find creative ways to run the football if that’s what they want to do to limit the hits on Mahomes his first week back. I don’t expect Mahomes to be all that limited but the Chiefs will have to avoid turning the football over and stopping Derrick Henry in the run game. Do that and I think they win big. What are you looking forward to most?

I know, I’m surprised I’m here too.

Have a good night everyone. I won’t get to watch the game tomorrow unfortunately, but you can bet I’ll be wearing my white Priest Holmes jersey. Had it since I was 14… still fits, still looks good.

Just because you mentioned it, I’ll probably but my Holmes 31 jersey out for the game. Go Chiefs!

I’m busy switching between the same 3 websites, listening to Allman Brothers, and working on some nerd shit.

Just watched the Chiefs take down the Vikings. Again. It was as good the second time as the first. It’ll be an early night here, heading over to Nashville in the morning to see Superman live and in action.

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

Watching the OU game here.

Looks to be hockey for me tonight, though the Wild have gotten off to a rather sputtering start this season. Unsurprising after learning how badly the previous GM screwed up the team.
