A recap of the Chiefs Vs Packer Sunday Night Football game.

Just when you thought maybe it could happen, Aaron Rodgers.

Game Summary

1st Quarter:

We all probably got a little too overconfident in the Chiefs for this game. Offense comes out sputtering with awful play calls and the defense gave up two touchdowns. It got so bad we saw Anthony Hitchens in man coverage on Aaron Jones for an almost touchdown. The defense did flash some with a sack by Kpass but overall, a rather lackluster start from this team. This quarter by quarter summary is going to reflect my feelings, I apologize in advance.

2nd Quarter:

What just happened! Andy Reid finally started calling the game we thought he was going to coming into the game! Matt Moore has settled down and hit Travis Kelce for a huge touchdown and then there was a jet sweep touchdown by Hardman that went for a 20+ yard touchdown. The defense put the clamps on Aaron Rodgers and they even sacked Rodgers to end the half! Finishing the half with three sacks on Rodgers. The Chiefs go into the half with a lead 17-14. Some of the play calls from Reid in this half have been absolutely great. The defense didn’t know what hit them.

3rd Quarter:

Ooof. Chiefs start the half off moving the ball well then the offensive line gives up a sack, but Colquitt pins the Packers inside the 15-yard line to start their drive. The Packers drove down the field draining a ton of clock and wearing out the Chiefs defense but force a field goal. What a stand after a long drive. Then McCoy fumbles the ball…Not looking good from here.

4th Quarter:

The defense just couldn’t keep up staying on the field and the Packers make the Chiefs pay for the fumble, ugh, thanks McCoy. Matt Moore is coming up clutch along with Sammy Watkins, the Chiefs drive down the field and punch it in with Damien Willaims. Rodgers is identifying linebackers in coverage and killing the defense, Aaron Jones is having himself a game and another long play, this time for a touchdown. Looks like the Chiefs are starting to get tired and then they pin the Packers offense at the two-yard line. Packers just wore the defense down in the fourth quarter, injuries were devastating for the Chiefs defense. Couldn’t stop running backs in the passing game. Chiefs lose 31-24

Box Score Champs

Passing Leader: Matt Moore 24/36 267 yards 2 TD 0 INTs

Rushing Leader: L. McCoy 9 carries 40 yards

Receiving Leader: T. Hill 6 receptions 76 yards

Tackle Leader: A. Hitchens 7 total

Sack Leader: T Kpassagnon 2 sacks

Interception Leader: none

Hard to be upset about the way the team played but this game felt like a game they should have won. Disappointing for sure.

Completely off-topic—I’m listening to an interview with Neil DrGrasse Tyson. That dude is such a badass.

1) Shady…damn.
2) Andy…go for it, man.
3) Spags…quit trying to cover RBs with LBs.

Otherwise, the game was pretty enjoyable and competitive.

Really impressed with Matt Moore’s contributions considering he was out of football for 2.5 years and has two weeks in the system.

Also impressed that the positive trend of the defense continued against a GOOD offense.

Chickennpickles

When Shady fumbled, I knew it was over, not including some miraculous ‘2 KC picks for TD’s’ kinda thing..
It’s the 2nd time that I’ve felt he’s cost us a game. Now, I understand it’s a team effort & all that, but if you have to play a mistake free game & pretty much everyone does that except you, that puts it on you.

BleedingRedAndGold

3rd shifts about to begin. See you there.

HawaiiFiveOh
HawaiiFiveOh

I actually don’t think it was the Shady fumble that was the defining moment. I think it was the decision to punt on 4th and 3 at the KC 40 was the decisive moment after the they had already moved the ball pretty well. Take a chance. The worst that happens is you fumble and turn the ball over anyway. I trust our running backs to pick up 3 yards on the ground. Or Moore hits Kelce over the middle. Or Reek takes it to the house. But to not even try was a waste of time.

EAFOX

AND Moore was incomplete to Kelce on third and three.

HawaiiFiveOh
HawaiiFiveOh

This was the first two downs:
1st & 10 at KC 33

(6:38 – 4th) (Shotgun) Dam.Williams left end to KC 37 for 4 yards (B.Martinez).
2nd & 6 at KC 37

(5:59 – 4th) (Shotgun) Dam.Williams up the middle to KC 40 for 3 yards (D.Savage; B.Martinez).

They picked up 7 yards right there just doing their thing.

EAFOX

Last comment for the night – It may not be a coincidence that our defense is becoming more aggressive and effective these last two weeks. With a healthy Mahomes, does Spags believe his best chance is to play more soft and hold the opposition to FGs? With Mahomes out, does he feel that he needs to make something happen? When the MVP returns, does Spags go back to the old way or stay with the new? Granted we cannot blitz every down but, hopefully, Andy tells him to bring that shit more often.

BleedingRedAndGold

But is Spags just rolling the dice more or is his scheme finally allowing to make more complex calls and have them work?

legal_kush
legal_kush

Third shift?

EAFOX

I would say both.

Texas Chief
Texas Chief

I dont think that thought process is accurate.
This is a brand new defense, with a brand new coordinator, and a LOT of brand new players to the scheme.
They HAD to start the season with vanilla fundamentals and base defense responsibilities as the main focus, and then build on it week by week. They have been adding a little more, and getting a little more complex in coverage’s and blitz packages each game.

Were about 1/2 way into the year now, and the players are getting comfortable with the defensive scheme and mentality….and so they are able to do more “outside the base” things as the players understand their responsibilities and play together as a unit more.

EAFOX

Rankin seems to be doing well at LG – course, I tend to follow the action so I could be wrong. Did LDT ever come back into the game?

EAFOX

Would also say that Ward is becoming a more dependable corner.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

This team’s depth is really being tested.

EAFOX

Good for us in the long run.

legal_kush
legal_kush

Yep,
Defense sucks, need to trade, can’t compete, yada yada yada.

EAFOX

KPASS had an exceptionally good game. Might be seeing him turn the corner since Green Bay’s linemen are pretty decent. Saunders making progress and saw Pennel level someone – might be good as he adapts to our system.

BleedingRedAndGold

I think KPass’ sudden progress is an indictment of Sutton’s later years in KC, and an indication that he abandoned/neglected players that didn’t fit his needs. I’ve defended Sutton on other points, but not this one. Bob owes some folks apologies, because I suspect that this carried over to other players. Players who’ve been bashed a lot, but are starting to look good.

EAFOX

I cursed Bob for ignoring the young players – KPASS could be our next rising star. If you remember, it was Andy that benched Scandrick and started Ward last year as well. Speaks and DOD could be busts but thanks to Bob – we have no clue.

kcfreak725
kcfreak725

Matt Moore played a pretty good game. I was super impressed with his composure and ability to move the ball, especially after we went down 14-0. The defense played well overall. I love seeing the team get pressure on the QB finally. The run defense also stepped up again. The blame for this loss is on Shady (dude needs to learn how to protect the football by tucking it in) and the short pass defense. The LBs are not good in pass coverage, especially on the RBs. That needs to change. Otherwise, I feel comfortable going forward with Matt Moore. I didn’t expect us to win anyway.

legal_kush
legal_kush

Missed FG when Moore shit his pants early was big, too.

kcfreak725
kcfreak725

That certainly didn’t help. But KC wasn’t out of it until late.

EAFOX

The trade off for extra pressure and better run defense is sticking linebackers on running backs without any safety help. Hitch got burned as he reacted to what he thought was going to be a short pass. Niemann played too deep in the end.

kcfreak725
kcfreak725

They just need to figure out that short pass game, because that’s what killed the defense, imo

EAFOX

Every defense has a weak point. You have to be willing to live with the result. Hitch being burned and Niemann playing too deep – take that away and we could have lived with the results.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Our defense also got caught in some lose-lose situations.

kcfreak725
kcfreak725

Aaron Rodgers also showed us why people compare Mahomes to him

EAFOX

We had him on the run but he showed why he is an all-time great.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

This is why I am not really upset at the way the defense played. It is Aaron Rodgers and we are starting some 3rd and 4th string guys along the DL and secondary. All things considered and you couldn’t have really asked for a better game.

EAFOX

Sans fumble

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

That fumble and Kelce’s drops hurt but I don’t think anyone expected the Chiefs offense to remotely keep up with GB. I’ll go ahead and that while the drops sucked, I really wonder if it is a comfort and familiarity issue. Also a couple were tough with good coverage.

kcfreak725
kcfreak725

I agree.

Sudden

Moore proved he could provide Alex Smithesque competence in a pinch. That won’t win us games against the Rodgers and Bradys of the world but could be enough against the Cousins and Tannehills

EAFOX

Moore did enough to win.

It’s encouraging to see the defense looking so salty after the first several games. Pair that with Mahomes and we could have something special.

As far as this game goes, we hung with a contender with both hands tied around our back and that says a lot of good things about the team. It came down to mistakes and making (or not making) plays that may very well go another way on another day.

– Shady’s fumble
– missed FG
– the punts on 4th and short
– Breeland dropping an easy pick
– Aaron Rodgers getting some huge assists from his receivers making crazy tough catches

That was the difference. The game swung GB’s way because of a play here or there and I’m ok with that considering how many of our best players were missing.

EAFOX

I agree with the fumble and Rodgers pulling some throws out of his ass and his receivers making plays. Cannot blame Butker on a 50 yd miss with wind and Breeland almost had a difficult interception. The punt was not necessarily a bad decision. Covering running backs with linebackers certainly hurt. Love Niemann but who cares if you get beat long when the game is over with a first down.

Cheat Code
Cheat Code

The punt was an awful decision, but that’s Andy Reid so you take the bad with the good I guess. Not a whole lot can be done about the lb’s in coverage. If you’re identity is becoming a blitzing defense who loads the line to stop the run, you’re gonna find yourself with bad matchups in coverage.

EAFOX

Conventional wisdom says to punt. If our backup quarterback does not make a first down, it is inevitably a two score game and we lose. If that is Mahomes, I would have went for the first down.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Especially where the Chiefs were at on the field.

EAFOX

If it was midfield, I say go for it.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Exactly this. Do you trust your offense being run by a backup QB to get 3 yards or your defense that has played exceptional all game to get a stop? Can’t blame Reid for his decision.

1wombat
1wombat

Easy?

SuperMegaChief
SuperMegaChief

One positive from this is to see how much better our backups are than the Raiders starters.

EAFOX

AND how much better our backup quarterback is to the Denver quarterback

pompano

All things considered I think it was a fairly solid game.
shit happens

Just like the old days. We can’t lose the turnover battle and win with moore at qb. Defense did some good things but still had some off plays. Cant ask for more than 24 pts from a moore led team but also cant turn it over.

legal_kush
legal_kush

I know at least one guy is proud that KC could put up more than 20 against that POS defense.

legal_kush
legal_kush

Wait! Your lead is “we all got a little too confident” in the Chiefs? Where the fuck have you been?

EAFOX

I assumed he misspoke.

legal_kush

Let’s hope so.
A missed field goal and a Shady fumble kept the snowflakes in their safe place.

Oh wow, if anyone has made plans for tomorrow night, cancel them.

slackator

As good as hes been for us McCoys fumbles have been decisive factors in 2/3 of the Chiefs losses. Maybe NOW he’ll learn to tuck it away and quit carrying it like a dumbass now that Reid benched him for it

EAFOX

He will not change. Andy benched him and ultimately could cut him if he feels like Shady is doing more bad than good.

MasterChief
MasterChief

That was my first concern when we signed him. I like his game but holding the ball it like that is plain stupid.

EAFOX

That is the nature of the NFL – Does the good that a player brings outweigh the bad?

MasterChief
MasterChief

Very true. I just don’t think he’d be any worse if he properly tucked the ball.

MasterChief

Yes I did 6 years

EAFOX

Old habits die hard. Exceptional athletes rise to the NFL with some good and some bad habits. There talent lets them overcome at the lower levels and, in this case, the first half of Shady’s career. Would you bench or release Tyreek Hill if you knew that he was going to fumble once a game? Not many would considering everything he brings to the table. Shady will need to change if he wants to last longer as the bad is catching up to the good.

legal_kush
legal_kush

Watkins dropped two passes.

EAFOX

Bell dropped one and Kelce as well. Happens to all. Still think that Watkins provides more good than bad.

KCChef

Kelce Dropped More Than One … : (

legal_kush
legal_kush

I’ve been as vocal a Watkins supporter aa you can find on this blog. Still gotta help out your QB.

EAFOX

True. Not excusing the drops but not judging the player either.

Chickennpickles
Chickennpickles

Honestly, I don’t care how scintillating a player is, if he fumbles 16 times a season (not counting playoffs), he’s not playing on my team. That’s way too many turnovers.

SuperMegaChief
SuperMegaChief

I didn’t think we would win. But we played much better than I thought we would. If we keep that defensive fire when we get our first stringers back. Look out. And then add Mahomes and Fish, I’d say we’d be looking pretty good.

EAFOX

Adversity can certainly define a team.

QuackTastic
QuackTastic

How in the hell is Bienemy/Reid not all over McCoy’s ass for the way he carries the ball? I dont give a shit if that’s the way he’s always done it. His lack of ball security is a major vulnerability to this team. Wheres the accountability? Its inexcusable.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

Reid just said McCoy “isnt a fumbler, that hasnt been his deal” so apparently he has his head buried completely in the sand and I guess has never watched any tape ever?

EAFOX

Reid is not going to call his players out in a press conference.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

And that’s why part of the reason his players completely lack any discipline or accountability. Even if you think he shouldn’t, he also
shouldn’t piss on the fans and tell them its raining either. We all know McCoy has a fumble issue. He has always had that issue.

EAFOX

What is the success rate of head coaches who call their players out in a press conference? Andy is taking the hit for Shady on this one which is why his players like him so much.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

which is why they do things like not commit dumb penalties and protect the ball for him? I give exactly 0 shits about how much the players like Andy. Why would any fan care about that? No one likes Belicheck. Hes a complete asshole. A complete asshole with 6 superbowl rings

EAFOX

Belichek does not throw players under the bus during press conferences – he barely says anything at all.

MasterChief
MasterChief

I guarantee Andy Reid chews ass just not in public.

EAFOX

Did everyone notice Mahomes trying to console Shady on the sidelines? Leader at work.

MasterChief

“Hey, keep your head up. At least 53 other guys that stuck with the plan died because you can’t master fundamentals. Good job, jackass.”

He hasn’t, historically, through his career, been a fumbler.

I think this is the first time he has fumbled in multiple games in quite some time. He is loose with the ball but that usually hasn’t bitten him in the ass.
