Post Game: Chiefs vs Ref Texans

That was brutal.  The refs helped decide the game early and took the wind out of the defensive sails.  The flags that the zebras threw in the first half made a big statement that the Chiefs defense is not allowed to even look at a Texan offensive player funny.  I had a five-gallon bottle of Bert’s lined up for a get straight win for the Chiefs.  It is now being used to drown my sorrows.  It’s hard to single out just one thing that is going wrong.  It just seems like everything is in free fall, and there is no real answer.

One hot teak put up by me is that we should bring back Berry.  Some of you don’t agree, but on a one year prove it deal with our current defense what could it hurt?  He plays balls out in the box, and when he was healthy our run defense was better.  With our current cap bringing back Berry won’t hurt anything, and at worst could actually fix our run D.  Who else would you rather have back there?  Dirty Dan?

This team has spent three years with the knowledge that our defense needs some upgrades and has done nothing to fix it.  Truth be told, it looks like the Chiefs are trying their best to blow up the defense to make it worse than it was the last two years.  I get it.  We have had injuries on both sides of the ball.  But a good team will overcome those injuries, this team let’s those injuries stop it cold.  A lot of pundits were saying early on that the only team that could stop the Chiefs is the Chiefs.  It is looking more and more like they were correct.

As it stands right now there is no easy fix by trade that will help this team.  We have no pressure up the middle on the defense, the run up the gut is not getting stopped, and our DB’s are being tasked with doing things that no other team would ask.  Another corner will not fix this.  Another pass rusher will not fix this.  The only real fix I can see is a return to fundamental tackling.

On offense the line is at best really bad from the center out to the left tackle.  With that in mind the play calling shouldn’t be for long developing plays, or shots down the field.  We should be running short passes that will allow Mahomes to get the ball out of his hands, and into the hands of our playmakers.

When you see Kelce getting mugged on every play start throwing his way.  You will end up getting holding calls and DPI calls on almost every play.  Continue doing this until they stop mugging him.  Sure, you may end up with an interception or two, but make it obvious that you aren’t just trying to get those calls, make it obvious you are pointing out the ref’s non-calls on those plays.  Reid needs to get in the face of the ref’s on the non-calls.  Show a little bit of fire if only to let the fans know you realize things aren’t working.

With that said, a statement win this Thursday will go a long way.  It will help show the league, and us fans that what we saw for the last few weeks was just an anomaly.  A win should get the entire team back on track.

Until next time, the Granddude abides.

Thought the offense pass interference non call against Kelce that was challenged on a key 3rd down was about as bad as it gets.
The replay was clear interference.

LOL true, I did however watch the 4th quarter and Watson and co. were driving at will.

So you saw less than 90 seconds of Mahomes. Thats how long we had the ball in the 4th quarter.

Should have seen the Alex fights. Ho boy, that loss would have been a real doozy. This is tame as hell.

Dang have we been rival/arch enemies/somehow friends since Alex? Dang!

There will be so much to talk about this game in tonights podcast that it will likely just be this game plus a mailbag

Dirty Dan is able to play every Sunday. Berry is…tearing it up as a safety for which team? Oh. I don’t want Day-to-Day back on the roster, thanks. Love me some EB29, but he barely played at all over the last two seasons. Sammy Watkins played more games last year than EB did – but he’s “injury prone”, according to fans. Prime EB? yes, please – but unfortunately they’re all out of stock on that product.

Tweet of the day in my book has been someone arguing that we should have kept Ballard AND Dorsey (Presumably keeping Veach on as Co-Director of Player Personnel, a rather influential position). Not only is that a nonsensical position to take, it requires deliberately ignoring (downplaying counts for this) the problems Dorsey caused during his tenure. Remember those? And scapegoating Veach requires ignoring/downplaying the problems, caused by Dorsey, that Veach got saddled with. (‘Those don’t matter! He should’ve gotten a first-round talent in the ’18 draft!!!’)

I’m not sold on Veach, but I’m even less sold on the unfair evaluation of him, beginning in ’17, when all the problems became his but folks didn’t care, it was all his fault. The successes in ’17 were “all Dorsey”, OTOH. From there it’s been full speed ahead with the anti-Veach cherry-picking and confirmation bias. If I had a subordinate who evaluated their personnel in such a way I would fire them before they fucked up their team even more, but Veach anti-fans appear to feel it’s a superior job evaluation process.

C’mon man. We are evaluating him based on the lack of success in the moves he has made. The 18 draft class is awful with only one contributor. His FA signings and trades have all failed except for Mathieu.
He has overpaid in picks and dollars for them as well. Veachh may be better at managing the cap than Dorsey but has shown himself to be worse at finding depth and talent overall.

The Francis Clark debacle is fireable by itself

Id be in favor of bringing Berry back if he were healthy but judging by the fact that no team has even looked his way tells me his not and even if he were he wouldnt make a but of difference on the woes of this defensive team. As for the throw the ball short until they inevitably call holding of PI on every play, I think the crew yesterday showed why you cant go that route with their I believe 0 DH or DPI against Houston despite the fact that we know they were looking for it at least against the Chiefs

I think one dpi on them, but otherwise I agree

Meanwhile Hopkins looks around and gets a late flag. There is no way you can defend this passing offense and not draw at least a couple of flags.

From my point of view the game yesterday was the or one of the most biased called games I have ever seen. The difference from the calls the chiefs were getting to the calls Houston was getting was unfathomable. It didn’t even feel like they were trying to hide it. I know I sound like a homer when I say those things but I really felt that way it wasn’t that I just wanted they called go the other way there was a lot of them that definitely should have went the other way or should have been called that were not called no. It was more than enough to change the game.

Outside of the refs I think even though the other team scored 31 our defense took the ball away from them a few times made them settle for a field goal and our offense didn’t hold up their end of the bargain I would actually put this game or on the offense then the defense. Most of that might be the play-calling or trying to go deep every play weather that is Mahomes or Andy Reid I don’t know. Also I needed to correct everyone on something else I’ve noticed, everyone keeps talking about our run defense our run defense can’t be the problem because it does not exist.

Why won’t the refs just come out and say that Kelce will never get a call? This goes back further than the 2016 incident where those refs had it coming to them. Look at his 2014 “fumble” for example.

What the hell guys? You are supposed to be running away with the division. Now you sitting here giving rivals hope.

HawaiiFiveOh

It’s hard to run away with the division when our defense keeps running away from the play.

No answers.. I wouldn’t be surprised if this Thursday Lindsey racks up 120+ yards rushing and we lose again. IF we do lose, the season is in serious jeopardy IMHO and wouldn’t surprise me to start seeing real cracks emerge within the “team” itself?
Sounds pretty grim, and I’m not giving up on the team, but what I’ve witnessed these past 3 weeks, this team is waaaayyyy overrated, and quite honestly is weak and has no other identity than “Well Pat is the reigning MVP, he’ll save us!” He’s hurt and he’s getting hit a little too much for my taste.

Only 120?

I don’t think it’s going to get any better this season.

KCRowdy

I don’t either.. By this time (Week 6), you’re pretty much who you are. Very little “corrections” can be applied. And the amount of corrections that this team needs apparently were done in the off season. And unfortunately, those corrections turned out to be HUGE errors. This defense unbelievably is WORSE than last season, it boggles the mind of how when you’re ranked 31st, you actually maintain that (and when put to the eye test, it’s actually worse) the next year despite player, DC and scheme changes. I’m at a loss.

This is not a Championship team, let alone a playoff team. Will we make the playoffs? Um probably, but I’m not confident after what I’ve witnessed the last three weeks.

Personally, I don’t know that the defense is worse. Seems worse? Sure. Better? Definitely not. But actually is worse? Not so sure.

IMO, the difference this year is primarily the offense. Our OL is about as stout as a rowboat in a hurricane. And our WRs have spent more time injured than they have on the field. If MVP Patrick Mahomes had time to make the throws that he made all year last year (and didn’t get friendly-fire ankle injuries) and we were up by 14-21 points early, the whole “run out the clock” strategy would lead to Chiefs’ wins.

Don’t get me wrong: our defense is horrible and needs major improvements. Definitely personnel change, and possibly DC changes. But if the OL can protect Mahomes and if the WRs can stay healthy, we’ll win a lot of games (barring the sudden-death OT games where we have to rely on the defense).

KCRowdy
KCRowdy

You also need to add Mahomes to hoping to be healthy list.
Defense, we’ve already done the personnel and DC changes, and like I stated above, IMHO they were HUGE errors. It is what it is now, and quite frankly, I think it stinks.. I’ll leave it to everyone’s own description of the stench, but it’s not roses or lavender.

Slayer0810
Slayer0810

I don’t think the makeover of the defense itself was an error. The error was that Veach has struggled to bring in impact players (and overpays non-impact players) for the player side of this makeover, and Reid went with Spags (who had a proven record of mediocrity) over a fresh face who might be able to change the culture of the defense.

I think a change was very much needed after last year. And from what I’ve seen so far, a change might be very much needed again at the end of this year. The key would be to get the right players and coaches this time around.

SuperMegaChief

It doesn’t seem like it now, but it will. We’ll get better if we can get healthy and Reid adjusts the game plan. I agree that we will not go far in the playoffs.
