Saturday Night O/T: How the Offense Gets Right

This weekend the Chiefs welcome the Colts to Arrowhead for a Sunday Night matchup. The Chiefs coming off a win where the offense looked a little out of sync but put up 27 points. The Colts come off a loss to the Raiders which is a bit of a head-scratcher, but the Colts were dominated in the trenches. The Raiders established their physical style of play and won the turnover battle. The Raiders were able to put up 31 points without passing for over 200 yards on the day. So how can the Chiefs exploit this banged-up Colts defense? They can take a page out of their playbook from a season ago.

The Chiefs spread out the Colts cover 2 defense and Mahomes found the windows it creates. It’s an easy Slant for Watkins and then he’s in open field and creates yards after the catch for 30+ on the play. They can also advantage of the aggressiveness of the Colts linebackers in the run and play-action game.

The Colts linebackers have shown to be very aggressive on tape and it’s surely helped them in some areas but hurts them in these. With the Chiefs RPO offense being a huge threat to linebackers that over pursue, there is also a bit of misdirection that the Chiefs can use to find some success in moving them around. There should be lanes that open up for the Chiefs in the air and on the ground.

Cover 2 defense’s typically create natural open pockets on the field and the Chiefs can use that to their advantage with the weapons and speed they have on offense. I think the offense gets back on track this week and Mahomes takes advantage of the coverages as well as the personnel the Colts will be rolling out on Sunday. I think Mahomes throws for over 300 yards and 4 TDs. Chiefs win 42-27. What about you?

Maybe I’m becoming bigheaded… but I don’t worry about this game. At home, the offense is likely looking to bounce back, defense looking to make a statement at home. I see KC putting up a 40 burger tomorrow. The Colts can’t match that.

Sorry. Maybe I’m getting drunk on these Chiefs, but we have the best player in the NFL and a ton of good talent around him. Tomorrow night will be a slaughter

Tony Sommer

Agreed, this should be one of the easier games of the season.

which should instantly make you nervous that this is the game they Chief up. Primetime helps though as I dont think this team will Chief up a Primetime game

BleedingRedAndGold

It’s a quirk of football that, oddities and low-probabilities aside, it’s generally safer to carry through with your hits than to go easy on one. That has some obvious limitations in the NFL, but if you exclude “kill-shot” situations I think it’d still apply.

Likewise, if I were giving the team a speech, it’d include that the likelihood that it will be an easy game is the precise reason you need to bear down and focus on executing – because nothing makes for a long day like underestimating an opponent. Everyone in the NFL plays at a level of skills and abilities well above every other level of it.

Which is probably why I don’t write inspirational speeches. Also, Third Shift, folks. The Afternight awaits.

Optimism is good – unless you are a pessimist. Then the optimism of others is intolerable.

How does our offense get back on track? One word:. Cheetah.

But seriously, having as many miscues as we did last week makes for extra motivation in practice this week. I expect to see our offense clicking very early. Also helps having a home game.

Leaving for Charlottesville VA tomorrow for a couple day getaway with the wife. OF COURSE it’s a sunday night game and the cabin we’re staying in has no cable or wifi (in the mountains). So I will have to miss the game. Any other gametime and I probably couldve talked her into seeing it from a bar. Oh well, Colts suck. Go chiefs!

Tony Sommer

That’s why I only take vacations during the offseason.

Good video clips and rundown, Dan, but I’m a little unclear on the pass-to-run thing with the Chiefs, or is it the other way around?

BleedingRedAndGold

My mind can be an awkward place to live, at times. Tonight as I was watching the Wild one announcer said something about the Wild trying to get physical, where does my mind go..?

Let’s get physical, physical…

Please kill me now. (j/k)

To resurrect an old SF&F convention saying – on a strictly tongue-in-cheek level; don’t try to out-weird me, I get stranger things than you for free in my breakfast cereal. 😉

The mental image of 70’s Olivia Newton John in leg warmers is not a thing to be resisted. Just relax and enjoy it.

Tony Sommer

Usually I don’t care about baseball, especially if it doesn’t involve the Royals, but the Twins have now lost 15 postseason games in a row. That’s unbelievable, one of those record that will be impossible to beat.

legal_kush
legal_kush

Most of those against the Yankees alone.

Tony Sommer

I heard 12. And I thought we had it bad with the Colts.

legal_kush
legal_kush

To be fair (sorry, don’t know why I use that phrase), the late seventies/early 80’s Royals couldn’t get over the hump against, yes, the Yankees until they did — lost to Phillies in five in ’80 series then finally broke through in thanks large part to Bret Saberhagen. But they didn’t get swept by them every year. It just felt like it, although I am going off memory here.

This year is the Yankees last chance to win a Series this decade, which would continue an impressive streak. They will beat a 100+ win Twins team, then give home field advantage away to a 100+ win Astros team, and could potentially give away home field in the Series to a 100+ win Dodgees team. Not sure that has ever happened.

It’s sad in my eyes, baseball is HR or K these days. The Yankees pulled off a double steal in Game One and the announcers were all “you just don’t see that anymore” (putting pressure on the defense with base-running) when the Royals did it in ’14 and ’15 going to two Series and winning one. Short memories.

Tony Sommer

I looked it up and we lost 3 ALCS’s in a row to the Yankees, but at least the Royals put up a fight and won 5 games in those series.

legal_kush
legal_kush

As it turns out, it’s still one short of the record if you include NFL, NBA and NHL.

Tony Sommer

What’s the record?

legal_kush

Chicago Blackhawks: 16
but the Twins can tie it.

Hockey night in Canada, Leafs at home vs Habs, no better rivalry, Habs score first but Leafs hold the lead in the 2nd period.

BleedingRedAndGold

I’m awaiting puck drop for the Wild-Avs matchup. Last year I started an introduction to viewing hockey, wonder if there’s any interest in the explanations.

Right on fuckin que….when he mentions leaf…..

Leaf

Well I’m actually an hour late, and he was taking about the Toronto Maple Leafs, not me.

sydenham

So there we go, BRaG, hockey talk started. Leafs are looking good this year, not like the Loafs of old, so long as their goaltending holds up, they should make the playoffs along with the Bruins and Lightning in the East. Hadn’t heard anything about the Sharks, Leaf, wazzup in the western conference?

Leaf
Leaf

The Knights look to pick up right where they left off last year. They’ve embarrassed, and I mean embarrassed, the sharks two games in a row now. Half the sharks are new young guys so some rough patches was expected. But damn, if this keeps up, this season will be hard to watch.

Sabres looked good tonight. The Devils are garbage but I’ll take it!

Saw a video of Chris Jones talking to the media. 2 things

  1. He was wearing a sick stone cold Jones tshirt. I would buy one, if not for his contract situation.
  2. He said, “Spags is a players coach. He actually listens to us.”
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

I might buy one anyway. I can only cheer for the chiefs, but Chris Jones will always be one of my favorites no matter where he goes.

He is an awesome football player and seems to be an even better person.

Don’t worry about where he plays… “Sack Nation” is a movement. No matter where you are, it’ll be there.

I’m a ku fan, I know I’m just asking to get roasted here, but I have to be honest about it. That is sadly hilarious.

Tony Sommer

As a Mizzou fan I love it of course, but I have so many questions. Why would this person go to a football game by themselves just to knit? Is she the girlfriend of a fan who dragged her there and he’s in the bathroom or something?

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

All great questions, but its probably funnier to not know. Maybe in reality she is a diehard got in early by some means we dint know about and beat everyone else there and knew she would. So she brought her sewing stuff to get her ready for the excitement that is ku football.

I was with you until “the excitement that is ku football.”

This should be the official anthem for Arrowhead Stadium.

Only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud, so good I can’t believe it, screamin’ with the crowd!

I’m going to recommend this based on our main color being blood red….and my name is blood!

I don’t think the Chiefs score that much because Andy Reid. 32-27 with a garbage time TD by Indy to make the score closer than the game m.

Leaf
Leaf

Really? The chiefs scored 40+ four times last year.

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

Also last year I read a fan post or possibly just a comment where someone gave the stats for how many teams had won by more than 2 tds since AR came to the chiefs. If I remember right the chiefs were 1st or 2nd on that list (with AS11 as the QB for most of that time) during that span.

Apparently Reid is more willing to win big than we give him credit for.

BleedingRedAndGold

Four TDs? Quite possible, but they’ll have to protect the ball much better, because after the Detroit game, their D might have the idea that they can do the same thing on SNF. I recall back when Kelce was dealing with fumble-itis, and how he got a rep and teams started focusing on getting him to fumble. Barring the unpredictable, turnovers are the most likely way the Colts win.

They’re saying good things about Brisset, so the guy can play – but how he reacts to Prime Time Arrowhead ought to be interesting. More than one rookie QB has gotten in trouble because of the noise, and I expect it’s difficult to be ready for it if you’ve never been to the Loudest Open-Air Stadium in the World(c).

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

True but Brisset has been around for a few he isnt a rookie.

BleedingRedAndGold

Thanks for the update, but my point was more that he hasn’t played a game at Arrowhead as a starting QB. Apologies for the sloppy wording.

Additionally, sometimes seasoned pros aren’t ready for Arrowhead *cough*Patriotsmondaynightfootball*cough*, so I still think it’ll be something to watch for.

MidKan Chiefs Lifer
MidKan Chiefs Lifer

Totally agree, I think it will be hard on him for sure.

Tony Sommer

Brisset is a quality backup. He’s the kind of guy a championship level team can send out to win a couple games if their starter misses some time, but something has to go majorly wrong for him to come even close to out dueling Mahomes.

Tony Sommer

I love SNF games. They’re so much more convenient.
