Chiefs Rooting Rankings: Week 3

Arrowhead Guys tells you who to root for this week!

Have you ever been sitting around on a Sunday after the Chiefs have pulled off yet another victory, watching a game between the Lions and the Cardinals and wondering who you should root for?

Then today’s your lucky day!

In this series we’ll go through the games each week and explain, from a Chiefs fan perspective, who you should and shouldn’t root for and which games are the most important.

If you want to know how I determine the rankings, or why not every game is included, see the explanation here.

Rankings:

1: Jets over Patriots

We’ve gotten to the point where it’s the Chiefs and Patriots and then everybody else in the AFC. Unfortunately the Patriots have an unbelievably soft schedule, so we’ll be rooting for some big upsets.

2: Rams over Browns

This is an interesting week for rooting interests, since the Browns are the top team playing where there isn’t some reason for Chiefs fans to root for the other team. The Browns are still a mystery, and mystery means a chance that they can challenge us. Better to shut their dreams down early.

3: Bengals over Bills

Like the Browns, this ranking says more about the other games below it than that the Bills are necessarily a major threat. But starting 2-0 means winning the division isn’t completely crazy. Like the Patriots, they get to play the Jets and Dolphins twice, and if the Patriots run into some bad luck the easy schedule may propel the Bills to a record far above their actual talent level.

4: Vikings over Raiders

Yet another game that is ranked highly due entirely to the fact that Chiefs fans have a clear rooting interest. The Raiders aren’t completely out of it yet, so while it’s a very, very long shot for them to seriously contend for the division, it’s still best for them to be beaten down early and often.

5: Jaguars over Titans

While I personally think the Jaguars are the better team, we’re up 2 games on them and have the tie breaker. They would need to be 3 games better than us over the rest of the season to jump us in the standings, which doesn’t seem likely.

On the other hand the Titans aren’t terrible and are within striking distance if they get hot. It’s in the Chiefs’ best interest for the AFC South to beat each other up and keep their win totals low.

6: Texans over Chargers

The Texans are better than the Chargers right now, so in theory represent a bigger threat, but the appeal of wrapping up the division is just too strong. Winning the division is so important that at this stage of the season you don’t want to take anything for granted.

That being said, if the Chargers do win, I won’t be sad that the Texans got that loss.

7: Packers over Broncos

We haven’t quite gotten to the point of rooting for division rivals in order to hurt their draft position, but the Broncos are nearly there. They almost beat the Bears, but are going to need to do better than almost winning if they want to be considered a threat in the division.

8: Falcons over Colts

It’s hard to imagine the Colts seriously contending without Luck, but they did get a good win over the Titans last week.

8: Steelers over 49ers

A little change to the rules. As was pointed out last week in the comments, I foolishly forgot that we have the 49ers 2nd round pick, so the more they lose the better that pick will be. With Roethlisberger out after an 0-2 start I’d rather let the Steelers get the win if it means that draft pick is a couple spots higher.

Surely the Texans beating the Chargers should be higher

The beauty of Mahomes is that we no longer have to score board watch – a constant activity when we had Alex. F the Steelers and the PATS. Want Chargers to lose, Denver to be embarrassed, and the Raiders to be exterminated. Other games – I can live with whatever results happen.

Earl Thomas on Chiefs: I plan on eliminating all the big plays

1st to admit…
I’m not a supporter of Ramsey – joining Chiefs

But, if Ramsey joins Chiefs – I’m in
Just don’t give up too many draft picks & sign him to SAME contract as #10 (you F up or cause headaches – Chiefs can cut & not be on hook for $$$)

I keep on referring to Broncos beating Pats & winning superbowl 50 – they had 2 EDGE rushers, DT & a THUG NASTY (attitude CB) in talib. IF Chiefs get THUG NASTY 2.0 — Chiefs will need someone to setup on EDGE besides #55. It’s all about beating PATS, this year! Chiefs will roll over any NFC team

Pay #95 as well

You make some valid points, but we disagree on Clark. IMO Spags’ D-line scheme hasn’t been fully installed yet, as shown by very few blitzes/stunts in the first game and not many more in the second. Meanwhile, Clark sets a solid edge against the run and is a threat to break up/blow up screens to his side. Those things were a weakness last season, but even without the D at its full potential they’ve greatly improved there.

I don’t want to replace Clark with a Dee Ford lookalike, especially this early.

Rooting for the Bills over the Bengals. Maybe they can catch the Pats. A boy can dream

If there was more than one report of the Chiefs hat, I might get excited. Not yet. Probably just click bait.

A Magic 8 ball or the local fortune teller are more credible than a fake Twitter account

It looks like Gordon Helmick might be the Jacksonville version of the Abandoned Place Mr. Weeney, so maybe theres a slight bit of truth to this and not just anonymous internet postings?

Are you really this gullible? Try googling his name–it takes 30 seconds. I hate to break it to you, but the Internet is full of lies.

I obviously want a great pick with the 49ers 2nd rounder, but I can’t root for the Steelers. If they lose every single game this year I’ll be happy.

Sorry, gotta root for the Bills. Only team in the AFC least that has a chance to keep pace with the Pats.

Yep. You root that the Bills will be good enough to at least give the Pats some tough games, and maybe a loss. Josh Allen in January doesn’t scare anyone.

Brylowman

I mean the description for why to root against them is the exact reason to root for them. In order for the Patriots to lose ground, another team in their division must gain ground. The Bills are that team. They are our hope to battle for the AFC East.

Armychiefj
Armychiefj

Yep. I don’t believe the Bills are a threat even if they somehow managed to win the division with some bad Patriot luck (though that won’t happen because clearly this is a godforsaken timeline in the multiverse), so I will root for them to win right up until they are a serious threat for the #1 seed in the AFC.

Fully concur. We want Buffalo to be as close to a legitimate competitor to the Pats as possible.

Please be Buffalo not buffaLOL
