Five Things We Learned from Thursday’s Media Availability | The Mothership

3. On defense, Spagnuolo provided his thoughts on how rookie safety Juan Thornhill looked in his first game action last week.

“I thought he tackled really well – I really did. That was encouraging,” Spagnuolo said. “There is always a learning curve with a rookie, but for the most part, I thought he did a nice job.”

Spagnuolo went on to explain the decision to start Thornhill – who led Kansas City with eight tackles on Sunday – over fellow safety Dan Sorensen in the game while emphasizing that the team still values the veteran defensive back’s contributions.

“A lot of different things go into that. I visited with Dan, and he’s a great team player,” Spagnuolo said. “He plays on a lot of special teams and there are a lot of reps there…I thought Juan did a good job during training camp and earned the starting spot, but we’re going to need all of those guys – all of the safeties – back there.”

Patrick Mahomes Offers New Details On His National Ad Campaign With Troy Polamalu | Forbes

Mahomes had never met Polamalu before, but doing so might have been even more thrilling for Brittany Matthews, Mahomes’ longtime girlfriend, who grew up a Steelers fan.

“She was excited to be on set with us,” Mahomes said. “Troy is awesome … I was always a fan of his game and his work with Head & Shoulders, so it was sweet to get to work with him.”

Although meeting Polamalu was the highlight for Matthews, Mahomes said the best part of the ad was when he pulls out the mini fan at the end to get his hair to blow in the wind as if it’s a modeling shoot.

“That was hilarious,” Mahomes said.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their first Coach of the Week honors for the 2019 season. The awards go to Center [High School] coach Bryan DeLong and Blue Valley West coach Josh Koerkenmeier.

As a result of this honor, both schools will receive a $500 player health and safety grant from the Hunt Family Foundation. Additionally, both coaches will be presented congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and a certificate recognizing their selection.

QB Index, Week 2: Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott rocket up ranks | NFL.com

#1 Patrick Mahomes

Individual Rank: Bhanpuri: 1 | Blair: 1 | Filice: 1 | Parr: 1

2019 stats: 1 game | 75.8 pct | 378 pass yds | 11.5 ypa | 3 pass TD | 0 INT

Parr: The reigning MVP didn’t even need two healthy ankles to slice and dice what many think is potentially an elite defense in Week 1. Sure, losing Tyreek Hill for at least the next month is going to be a new test, but this superhuman pigskin distributor (and Sammy Watkins) did just fine without him against the Jaguars (18 of 25 for 216 yards and 2 TDs after Hill left the game). We’re full speed ahead on Mahomes at No. 1.

Chiefs’ specialists get an assist from the Royals as they prepared for Oakland’s unique playing surface | The Athletic

Like many of his teammates, Butker, the Chiefs’ kicker, watched Monday’s game AFC West rivals the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders. In preparing to play against the Raiders, Butker felt his usual preparation would need to be altered ahead of Sunday’s game in Oakland. Butker found special teams coordinator Dave Toub in the Chiefs’ practice facility and asked if the team could contact the Royals’ groundskeeping crew.

Why? Because Butker wanted to kick footballs on the infield dirt inside Kauffman Stadium, something he had never done before in his three-year career.

“It was a really good idea,” Toub said before Thursday’s practice. “He said, ‘Hey, can I go over there?’ We looked into it, we called over there, and they were really accommodating.”

Four members of the Chiefs — Butker, punter Dustin Colquitt, long snapper James Winchester and special teams assistant Rod Wilson — rode golf carts Wednesday for the short trip across the parking lot between their practice facility and Kauffman Stadium. They took their usual equipment and a large duffel bag of footballs. When the three specialists entered the field through the Royals’ dugout, they were greeted by Trevor Vance, the Royals’ senior director of groundskeeping, and two of his assistants, Jonnie Reed and Clint Elder.

LeSean McCoy could see bigger role with Chiefs based on Week 1 | ESPN

McCoy was given only a limited amount of plays to learn for last week’s game, and he has expanded that list this week.

“I probably had one mess-up mentally, but other than that I was locked in,” he said. “I want to earn my [place] on this team. I don’t want it just because of my name or what I’ve done in the past. I want to earn it. These guys are already established. It’s been a great offense before I got here, and if I wasn’t even here it would still be a great offense. I just want to be a part of it, earn every play I get and every possession.

“I’m a little rusty still. I didn’t play a lot, even in Buffalo. They would monitor my reps. I only had one preseason game where I really played. Everything is different here, from practice tempo to the amount of reps. I still have to get used to that.”

Californians aren’t betting on the Rams or Chargers | LA Times

The Rams may have made the Super Bowl last season, but Californians aren’t standing in line to bet on them to win it this season.

According to data provided by BetOnline.ag, more bets have been made in California on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl than on any other team. The Chiefs are the top pick in 14 states. New England is second with five states. The Cowboys are third with four states.

Chiefs’ RB LeSean McCoy to Support Cancer Research With On-Field Performance This Season | The Mothership

But every time McCoy trots into the end zone or tallies triple-digit rushing yards this season, it’ll mean a lot more than just another impressive performance on the field.

McCoy is one of 14 players to join the fight against pediatric cancer this season through the “Still Strong Foundation,” which was created by former NFL linebacker Devon Still when his daughter was diagnosed with cancer. Each week, participating players will dedicate their performances to the cause
by encouraging fans to pledge a pre-determined donation based on certain statistical achievements, such as catches or tackles.

For McCoy, those checkpoints will be touchdowns and 100-yard games.

Ramsey: ‘Everything’s cool’ with Hill after injury | ESPN

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey said he reached out to Kansas City receiver Tyreek Hill to check on him after Hill suffered an injury when Ramsey tackled him during last Sunday’s game.

Ramsey said he and Hill had a conversation and that “everything’s cool” between the two.

Hill suffered a sternoclavicular joint injury that will sideline him this week and possibly longer. Hill was hurt when Ramsey tackled him near the sideline after a reception late in the first quarter of the Chiefs’ 40-26 victory.

Ramsey also said he wanted to make sure people knew that he did not intentionally bump into the injured Hill after the play. Ramsey said he’s seen several slow-motion replays that appeared to show that, but said the contact with Hill came after he’d bumped into and bounced off Chiefs lineman
Cam Erving on the sideline.

Man, I am so glad we’ve got Shady here now. Love the attitude and work ethic he’s got. Hoping he’s got a lot left in the tank.

Nick’s not wrong. It’s a bit ignorant to write the Chiefs’ defense off because they were bad last year and didn’t look great last week.

Funny seeing fans from every fan base saying their team needs to trade for Minkah. We’re not alone in our worry for our corners my friends.

Part of me just thinks that it’s the nature of the beast. The NFL is going the way of the offense full speed, and has for years. Passing is exciting, so of course they tailor the rules to favor that. I don’t think it’s all of a sudden we have a plethora of crappy DB’s around the league…I think that playing DB is probably one of the most tough positions on the field due to the way the rules are positioned against you.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Anyone else think Cam Newton looked completely off last night?

jmgunn0124
jmgunn0124

Worse than normal, yes, but in my opinion he has been overrated most of his career. I go to Charlotte a couple times a year and my coworkers there think he’s the best QB to ever play. He’s been really underwhelming to watch for a while

CHIEFSandSABRES

His throwing is just terrible this season so far.

Chickennpickles

His shoulder is pretty much held together with bubblegum & baling wire at this point.

He didn’t look off, he just looked like Cam Newton.

He’s never been very good.

he had that one MVP level year. Then has shit the bed since.

Chickennpickles

Yeah, I remember when he 1st came on. With that size, arm & scrambling ability, he really looked like the future of the position…For about 14/15 games..

if by last night you mean the last 5 or so years, yeah. What was with his homeless meth head babushka lady get up, does he seriously think he looks good or is he crying for help and people are ignoring him?

There was so much talk about Fitzpatrick that I thought we had already traded for him.

jmgunn0124

I saw somewhere that he played 200-300 snaps at outside corner last year too. I’m not interested in giving up a 2nd for a safety or slot though

<>I guess Fitzpatrick comes with a Mother

During Miami’s joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in August, Fitzpatrick’s mother, Melissa, mentioned on Twitter that he was being incorrectly used at strong safety to suit other players’ skill sets.

That’s exactly why I don’t want him. He is not getting traded for performance or maybe even his own concerns, his mother seems to be driving a lot of this.
