Winners and Losers: Chiefs versus Steelers

Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh was a less than stellar team showing. Yes it is preseason, yes these do not count, but hey it is material for me to use in articles such as this, so here we go.

Winners

Herb Miller: This is a name some Chiefs fans might want to keep an eye on. Another impressive preseason showing from Miller. If he keeps it up he might just crack the 53.

Cody Thompson: He led all Chiefs receivers on the evening, tallying 69 yards.

Darwin Thompson: The rookie running back certainly looks the part, and he is showing it during this preseason. Where he eventually lands on the depth chart is still up in the air, but so far he is having a great preseason.

Mecole Hardman: Responsible to Kansas Cities lone score on the night, another rookie who is having a great start to his preseason. It will be fun to see what Andy and company scheme up for Hardman come the regular season.

Losers

Quarterbacks: All of them. A very uninspiring team effort from the Quarterbacks. They will have a lot to discuss in the meeting room this week, but after this game the tape is going to be ugly.

Khalen Saunders: I left him off last week after his no show, and just figured it might be the rookies nerves. Again this week he was a no show, so he makes the list. Need to see something soon from the rookie third rounder.

Injury Bug: From the looks of it, Marcus Kemp has the most significant injury of the 5 Chiefs who went down Saturday night. Still not confirmed but it is feared he suffered an ACL injury. Also Tyrann Mathieu, Deon Yelder, Breeland Speaks, and Justin Hamilton exited with injuries which we will continue to monitor.

Carlos Hyde: So far this preseason Hyde has not impressed, and added to that Saturday by fumbling. If he is looking to make this squad, he really needs to step it up the remaining preseason games.

Team as a whole: When you have a team a good as the Kansas City Chiefs have right now, there is no reason you should muster only 7 points, especially in a preseason game. We all know what this squad is capable of, and when Mahomes is in the game for a full 4 quarters, yet the preseason is for stuff just like this, evaluation. When you need to see clear winners and losers, Saturday night nearly the entire team took the evening off.

I don’t think offensively we are as bad as the showing lets on. The Steelers were blitzing all game hoping to see some of our playbook against that type of D. I say Reid is the biggest winner because he didn’t fall for it and ran only vanilla stuff. I think the O line is the biggest winner because they held there own against one of the better fronts in the game.

You forgot to make the fans Losers lol, just for watching that snooze-fest

Hyde vs. Thompson
Per PFF through 2 games Darwin Thompson has forced 5 missed tackles on 10 touches, Hyde has forced 0 missed tackles on 7 touches.

Josh Caldwell got picked up by the Bears. Good for him. I hope he makes it for the long haul.

Former Chiefs RB Josh Caldwell signs with Bears

Tarkus

This is why we cut him when we did, to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere. Read that Veach was working the phones pumping him up to other GMs.

I’m sure he understood what was going on with the timing, even if it did suck.

Tarkus

Yeah, he had to know that he had zero chance in KC.

Having said that, a Bears fan told me they don’t have room for him either, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back on the practice squad at some point.

I concur with Tony’s conclusion that the game wasn’t as “bad” as it appeared, but for different reasons. Mine do nothing to invalidate Tony’s take; to put it simply, the Chiefs weren’t working on their primary offensive style. To my eye, they were playing something much closer to MartyBall than AirReid, which could easily be because they wanted to work on the running game and evaluate RBs and maybe OLinemen for their run blocking.

Did it look good out there? Of course not, but keep in mind the buzz about all the INTs Mahomes was throwing about a year ago; Reid uses this time for teaching and development, so the tape from this game will probably be very useful to those ends. Another thing is that – and I don’t know if this applies to Hyde or not – the tape will help them sort out which problems a given RB has in his game and which of those can be fixed by teaching and training by the time the season starts. The flip side of that are the problems that would take a season to work on, such as strength/weight gain, and which are basically insoluble, like speed. Gotta keep in mind that this won’t be a one problem/RB analysis, either. There are going to be a variety of things that need work in most cases, maybe all cases, so the importance of the issues will vary.

I should’ve turned that into a full-on post, shouldn’t I. Oh well, maybe next time. I’m not sufficiently caffeinated yet.

The tape never lies…

The tape never lies, but the people watching it can lie to themselves. Also, simply put, the decisions you make influence how you see things.

I think that you have to remember that this was the 2nd pre-season game and Andy like to keep it very vanilla. I also think Spags was doing the same thing.

I kind of feel that Carlos Hyde might have been the loser. I don’t think that the Chiefs will keep 3 RB’s and Carlos might be the odd man out. Damien Williams and Darwin Thompson are almost must keeps. I think that Darrell Williams has more upside and is hungrier.

O’Daniel is being disappointing this off-season. When he was drafted I pictured him as a hybrid Safety, who would take Sorensen’s place. IMO, DOD is bigger, faster, as good in coverage, and a better tackler. I question if he will make the Roster this season, kind of hope we can get him on the PS and maybe groom him for that move.

While I think that Miller and Fields looked pretty good, I question if they are ready for a lot of playing-time. I would like the Chiefs to make a trade with either the Falcons or the Dolphins. Both these teams need help in the interior OL. The Chiefs could trade 2018 Chiefs Rookie of the Year, Andrew Wylie, who did pretty good in place of LDT is contesting the starting OLG position with Allegretti. The word is that the Chiefs are planning to sign Jeff Allen. Jeff, McKenzie, and Jimmy Murray could provide backup The Falcons might trade Blidi Wreh-Wilson a 5th season veteran, who is supposed to have great ball skills and is a fine technician. The Dolphins might trade Cordrea Tankersley entering his 3rd season, who started 11 games as a rookie, but suffered an ACL last season.

Tarkus

I don’t think there’s any question the Chiefs carry 3 RBs (plus Sherman). The only question is whether Hyde or Darrell is the odd man out.

Before training camp I wasn’t sure Hyde would even make the roster. After trading up for Thompson it seemed like we would get a legit competition. That said Hyde has been even worse than I expected. For a vet who is supposed to be good in the passing game this has been a very disappointing preseason thus far. I don’t see a legit difference between what Hyde is providing vs what Darell is. I would assume that makes Hyde the odd man out but Darell should be eligible for the practice squad so that holds consideration as well.

Didn’t Litton also leave the game with an injury after a late hit?

Another loser: the Stealers.

They dialed up blitz packages and kept their starters in well after we went to second string and still didn’t look to be all that competent.

The browns win that division walking away

HawaiiFiveOh

I don’t know about that. The Ravens might challenge them

Sudden

The Ravens could but I’m still not sold on Lamar Jackson as a passer. But that’s the only real threat as far as I can see

Tony Sommer

This is why I don’t consider the team as a whole a loser. Our backups were going against their 1’s, and our 3’s were going against their 2’s. When you consider that it was actually a good performance.

Sudden
Sudden

I’d almost be ok w it if Tomlin has spoken w Reid ahead of the game to let him know “hey we’re gonna work on blitz packages and keep the starters in longer” but based on Andy’s postgame it certainly didn’t sound like that was known

Isn’t the way to combat ‘surprise’ schemes by doing the same thing you would do in the regular season…adjust?

Or in our case give Patty a quarter to figure it out then watch the fuch out!

Andy keeps his cards close to the vest. In the Pre-season he always keeps it very vanilla.

The Steelers were playing their last home pre-season game, so they tried to dial it up for the fans.

So is Darwin getting a new number when he makes the final 53 man roster? If not, no biggie. If anyone looks a worthy heir of #25 it’s him

Caleb Durland

That jump cut he did during the game brought back some nice memories.

Interesting article from the Redskins site discussing potential pick ups after cut downs in the AFC West. Lovett and Pringle are on their list.

Can’t argue with that. I think several teams will be looking at our roster cuts, especially at WR and OL.

I don’t see any reason to keep Hyde. He’s slow as shit and he will take PT away from Thompson.

DirecTV saved me a couple of hours by blacking it out, so I guess I owe them a thanks. Or a middle finger.

AT&T appears to want to supply the most overpriced and underwhelming cable alternatives. They’re succeeding if so.

NFL Network blocked it because it was supposed to be aired locally. But DirecTV and the local NBC fucks are apparently in a dick measuring contest right now and I guess I get to be the judge.
