Friday Night at the Movies w/ Adam and Dan

Its Friday Night! Adam and Dan take you to the movies and argue for alien movie supremacy.

Dan: Hey what movie do you want to do this week?

Adam: I’m not entirely sure but I have a general idea. Hear me out …

…Aliens

Dan: Ohhh… okay. Yeah I like that idea but what exactly do you mean?

Adam: I’m not sure. I don’t mean we have to do the Aliens series just in general “aliens”.

Dan: You got a problem with the greatest alien movies ever, the Alien Series?

Adam: No more than the average, better than Aliens, Predator.

Dan: Oh I see how it is.

Dan’s Pick

Daniel Harms

There will never be a bigger disappointment in the cinematic universe than what they did with the Predator series. You have the most badass alien of all time and you cast Danny Glover to go up against it after Arnold? It’s just absolutely head-scratching. But the Alien series? Sigourney Weaver is the definition of a badass in these movies. After being the lone survivor and being afloat for 57 years after the first movie, she is forced to go back to the same planet she came from to try and save colonizers that have been on the planet for some time now.

Watching this movie reminds me how much better put together they were than the Predator movies and how the story even came together better, for the first two at least. We take a second to mourn the late great Bill Paxton, RIP Bill… There is a reason the second installment is called Aliens. There are a TON of them in this movie, and Weaver even has to fight the Queen. Tell me what Glover can possibly do to make that movie better than this one? He can’t. Weaver not only is a badass, but she’s also lowkey hot in these movies. Go get ’em Sigourney.

After the major success of the SciFi Action Thriller Predator, someone decided it was a good idea to film Predator 2. And boy were they right. Regardless of what you may have heard or seen,  Predator 2 is actually a pretty good, and cheesy, flick.  It got hammered by critics like many sequels  for not living up to the original but I’m here to tell you otherwise. In fact, this week’s movie selection is much like last weeks article. I’m here to talk you of the “this film sucks ledge.” Now with open minds we dive head first into Predator 2.

Predator 2 is that classic 90’s bloody action movie. There is tons of cursing and blood with some quality old school film special effects. When I say “they don’t make movies like this anymore” its because they literally don’t. Studios all across the states switched to computerized special effects shortly after this movie was made and personally I think they sucked for half a decade.

After the first predator movie I, and many others, was left  wanting more Predator details.  This movie delivers a bit of that towards the end. You get to see some predator civilization, even an “alien” head mounted on the wall as some sort of art/trophy. Its a nice touch and spawned the Alien Vs Predator talk. But enough details, time for the plot.Basically the story for Predator 2 goes…

In 1997, the city of Los Angeles is in flux from dealing with a massive gang war between a Columbian Gang and a Jamaican Gang. After a string of strange killings begin occuring across the city, Police Officer Mike Harrigan, played by Danny Glover, begins to take interest. A fellow officer is killed and Harrigan decides to hunt down the killer regardless of what his superiors say.   FBI Agent Peter Keyes, played by Gary Busey, tries to slow Harrigan down and talk some sense into him. Keyes tells Harrigan that what hes dealing with is a specialized alien hunter. Keyes even shows him video from a run with a similar predator in the with jungles of South America. Together they formulate a plan and try to save the city from the predators.

Listen the story is pretty basic, but the story isn’t why you aren’t pushing play here. You’re vesting your time because it’s the friggin Predator and  have Gary Busey in his prime. This is a late night movie classic and deserves respect. Buy it, rent it, just watch it and vote below.

I got to go with Alien here. If for no other fact than the Swiss artist, H R Giger, was responsible for the design of the alien. His airbrushing, sculpture and the such , single handily transformed a certain portion of tattooing into the bio mechanical works of people like Aaron Cain and Guy Aitchison, which has now revolutionized how tattooing is done today. I know that’s off topic of the movie part, but I figured because the alien was designed off his artistic mind, it was at least a bit relevant.

Godzilla over King Kong every day.

The xenomorphs had no motivation or weakness. What did they want? Other than drooling all over and bleeding acid they didnt really do anything.
Arnold and the first predator was epic and what kid didnt imagine being the Predator sitting in a blind? The series fizzled with Glovers Lethal Weapon crossover. I thought he was too old for that sht? Then Predator 2 ends with a Back to the Future moment and gets our hopes up for a decent origin story.
Predator 1 > Aliens > Alien >the rest.

Are we really going to leave the Rowdy Piper out? They Live gets the nod.

This would be a better argument if it was franchise versus franchise.

Aliens was James Cameron. And Jimbo makes some of the best movies of all time. Predator 2 was a good movie. But it lost it’s best character besides the Predator, in Arnold. Giving the movie the Speed 2 treatment before Speed was even made.

That loses points for me.

Aliens had Paul Reiser playing one of the best schmuck roles you’ll ever see. It had Bill PAXTON in arguably his best side role. It had the marines with a Rambet character that was another badass female role. It had the Android. It had Newt to play with your parental and child emotions. It had some of the best practical effects ever. They filmed the alien face attacks in reverse to make the attacks seem faster… So creative. Weaver was never better except in maybe Ghostbusters. But that’s a completely different character.

It had one of the best lines in any movie ever. With, get away from her you bitch.

It even years later used its moxie in Avengers: Infinity War to get our heroes Spider-Man, Iron Man and Doctor Strange out of an impossible situation…

It is a no contest battle against Predator 2.

If it was the first Predator. Maybe it’s a better fight versus, Get to the choppa and you’re one ugly mother*****r. Or the classic, I ain’t got time to bleed.

But versus Danny Glover? Versus the cool visor additions? Versus the Alien trophy (only made a great feature because Aliens was so great)? Versus Danny Glover’s disk action? Versus prime Gary Busey?

All wonderful, watchable things.

It’s still no contest for me. Because Predator 2 could have been so much more just with an Arnold cameo or flashbacks to other deceased characters… while Aliens was practically perfect and added so much more to the original.

Aliens. All day everyday. Except on Sundays. That’s for the Chiefs!

Great topic guys.

Alien is Ridley Scott. Not James Cameron.

Aliens was great, we need to watch it again with the boys.

James Cameron is great. You know how I feel about Titanic. We need to watch it. Then maybe the original Predator.

Great stuff guys.

The original was. I believe James Cameron did aliens

Chief-Blinders-On

The first one is. You are correct.
The second one is James Cameron.

And you can tell. They’re both great in completely different ways.

Can a demogorgon be considered an alien? Because I dig that flick.

That was a TV show, not a movie. And no. It is closer to a demon then an alien.

There will never be a bigger disappointment in the cinematic universe than what they did with the Predator series

I think the die-hard Star Wars fans on this board would disagree with you. Episode VII, and especially Episode VIII, are both garbage.

workingmansdead

No, we are not turning this into Star Wars talk. Everything always has to turn into Star Wars talk with you people. Star Wars sucks. I’m going to edit any other comment that tries to start discussion about Star Wars.

Leaf
Leaf

I think we’ve had like two or three SW discussions on this site. And one was designed to be that so it didn’t detail into one.

Nasrani
Nasrani

With all due respect to you, isn’t that the beginning of the kind of heavy-handed censorship that caused the consternation at Another Place?

This is an open thread about movies, which means I can put in my two cents about any cinematic franchise I choose. Yes, it’s true I mention that particular one quite a bit, perhaps to the point of overdoing it, but I don’t watch all that many movies. I never did growing up and it’s not really a habit I have developed.

There are also open threads about alcohol. Alcohol sucks. It’s what killed my mom a couple years ago. But I don’t take every opportunity I have to lambast those who partake in a brew or three. It’s their hobby, it’s their life. Let them do what they want. “Live and let live,” as the saying goes.

Any topic is fair game in open threads, even those that other users may not personally agree with, enjoy, or want to see talked more about on these boards. And yet, they’re there all the same.

With that being said, I will honor your opinion and try to dial back talking about a certain space opera/cinematic franchise, and won’t come to these “Friday at the Movie” threads anymore if that is what you want.

I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your day.

workingmansdead

I was mainly just joking, but I guess it fell flat. Sorry if that irritated you, Nas. Re-reading it, I can see why. My bad.

Nasrani
Nasrani

The fault is mine, my friend. I guess I do overdo it a little mentioning that franchise, for which I do apologize. I know there are many here who don’t particularly enjoy it, and hearing it always mentioned can be irritating.

I’m that way with the Marvel cinematic universe – I enjoy the first movie in any given series, and then after that it’s a re-hashing of the same thing. Many here like those movies but I guess I don’t get the appeal. “Iron Man 2” was, to me, the same thing as the first one, just with different AC/DC songs in its soundtrack. (shrug)

You opened my eyes to my needing to scale it back a bit, and for that I thank you. Have a great day my man!

And don’t sweat it; it’s really hard to convey emotions and feelings on the Internet, much less on a forum.

Side note: where does that saying come from? “putting one’s two cents in…” especially if someone ever only offers you a penny for your thoughts. Where does the other penny go?

Chief-Blinders-On

I thought it was a good point.

As with every scary monster / alien / horror franchisee ever made…… the movies just go down hill once they have the monster reveal. It’s the ‘scary in the shadows’ tension building ‘WTF was that?’ freak out that makes the monster.

Your brain gets to fill in all the details and struggle to decide what’s real. Once the monster is introduced…. everything goes down hill.

Predator was an okay flick (for an ‘Arnold never runs out of bullets’ action movie), and once that film was in the can, the rest of the series sucked wet arsehole. At least with the Alien franchise they introduced a semi-new horror in the second flick. The Alien queen mother/ breeder was a yet undiscovered monster to add to the scare factor. Predator 2 was just a rehash of a known monster, in a different setting. – It was ‘Muppets take Manhattan’ if the muppets had a stealth wristband and a laser gun. — Boring

It’s like the Saw series. The first film was utterly great. It was one of the best horror flicks I’ve ever seen. But starting with movie 2….. it just got progressively worse and worse. The big reveal had already happened. All the best ‘WTF is going on?’ tension snapping scares were gone. The rest of the movies had to rely on increasing levels of ‘gross out’ blood and gore situations just to try and keep the audience interested. I gave up completely after the 3rd movie (during which I fell asleep because it was so bad)

Scary-Mystery-Thriller > Bloody-Gross Out-Horror (Every. Single. Time.)

Alien Vs Predator was a hollywood crash grab that made me want to choke a baby. What a piece of shite.

The predator is the best character and the first predator movie is the best of either series imo. Also a big fan of AVP.

I had to go with Aliens, since I originally saw that in the theater & it blew me away. I will say that I never really understood all the hate Predator 2 gets, cause I enjoyed the hell out of it. In fact, I watched a few months ago (I watched Arnie’s as well) & I still think it holds up pretty good.

Leaf
Leaf

The hate is because they went from being a hardcore action film in the first one to a cheesy one in the second. In a vacuum it wouldn’t be so bad, but its not and so feels out of place next to the first.

Severely Concussed
Severely Concussed

They also went full blown comedy in the most recent one with Olivia Munn. It was fun, but had zero suspense.

Anthony Stratton

I thought that one was terrible. When an 8 year old is the best actor in a movie…

Anthony Stratton

Agreed, should have pitted the franchise as a whole against each other…

Chickennpickles

The 1st one is definitely superior, in part because it was the introduction to the Predator, and that’s a pretty awesome character. I always put that movie into the horror/thriller genre, even though it has plenty of action.

Severely Concussed

I love both of those series. Aliens is superior. Mostly.

But the best alien movie of all time.

Aliens was the better movie but the Predator was the better character… that’s why the AVP series was so much fun.

Tyrone
Tyrone

I was going to say, almost word-for-word, the same thing, up until the AVP part.

Daniel Harms

AVP one was well done, 2…we don’t talk about. But yes. Alien movies are better, Predator himself is the best character

Chief-Blinders-On

I don’t know about that. AVP was a decent popcorn movie, maybe (not if you loved both franchises). But they put in Antarctica. Added pyramids. Took away the Predators best feature in the laser cannon and had some of the worst lighting ever to save on special effects.

It was okay. But they had a chance to make a phenomenal movie and struck out bad while trying to bunt.

I’ll watch it. But I’m never not disappointed by thinking about what could have been.
