How good/bad is this contract compared to most kickers around the league

Mitko

That Average would put him at 14th highest paid kicker in 2019.
1-13: Tucker, Gould, Gano, Gostkowski, Boswell, Lutz, Crosby, Succop, Lambo, Vinateari, Myers, Prater, McManus.

But Yahoo reports highest paid kicker and I’ve also seen 8th so IDK

Good for Hairry Buttkicker!…although to make this perfect I think I would have rather had Michael Dickson aka Michael son of Dick in the 4th in 2018 instead of Armani Watts….we are paying our punter too much even though he is very good.

Ps I’m gonna keep making this joke because low hanging fruit is my jam.

Cute family. Glad we’ve extended him especially considering how poorly the overall kicking talent has been in the NFL the past few years. Its smart to lock in a clutch guy.

slackator

Great news for him, but Im just not about signing kickers to multi year contracts when they can fall off a cliff without warning and are relatively easy to replace. Im not gonna pretend to know how this contract compares or what it does to the cap or any of that, I’ll leave that up to those who are much smarter than me, but I just prefer kickers getting 2 maybe 3 year contracts max and reworking when the time comes

BoJest
BoJest

Ask Chicago how easy it is to replace kickers.

Rule 1: don’t let a Lin Elliott type ruin your season
Rule 2: don’t hire someone named Blewitt to try to fix an incendiary kicking situation-that’s just kicking your fans in the teeth as they vomit

Rule 3 : Never Mention a loud “The Kicker Who Shall Not Be Named “‘s Name ! … : )

Say Lin Elliott three times fast in front of the mirror!

Berserker

…has lent some actual empirical and scientific credence to these ghoulish superstitions. In the study conducted by Dr. Caputo of the University of Urbino, participants were asked to stare into a mirror in dim lighting for ten minutes. Results demonstrated that 66% of participants experienced huge deformations of their own face, 28% saw an unknown person, and 48% saw fantastical and monstrous beings.

We passed that curse back to the Colts after The Old Man missed a couple of kicks he should have made.

starry1

Didn’t he retire after that game?

ForeverRanger91

Who Vinatieri?

starry1

Yup

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Nope. He is going to play one more year with Indy.

Fire_FG_the_moron

He was released of his curse. It now lives in Indianapolis.

BleedingRedAndGold

I agree with some others, the Elliot curse has been broken and returned to Indy. Also, after last season’s offensive success, now’s a good time to stop kicking him, he’s been down long enough. On top of that, he’s apparently always owned that loss in his own eyes and in what he says, so after this long, I’m inclined to let bygones be bygones and stop using slogans which have been used so often WRT Lin that they have basically become meaningless cliches.

I felt that way all the way up to last season, but as good as 2:15PM was, and after reading an article written about him that season, I stopped and thought about things. It’s been over twenty years now, after all, and a new era has dawned. That’s long enough, IMO. Besides, on the superstitious side, do you want the curse to return by invoking its name repeatedly? 😉

Sure good ones are great, and no doubt about Butker and his ability but like I said Kickers can get the yips and fall off a cliff over night so Im not really a fan of long term locking up of a kicker. Even if I had known 47 years ago how Vinatieris career would turn out, Id still only sign him to 3 year deals at the most. Sure he’d have signed 10+ contracts at this point in his immortal career but Id still want an easy enough out in a short as possible time span for when that cliff comes

CWil03
CWil03

this deal is essentially a 3 year deal, after 2021 it is year to year

Mitko

If I’m reading this correct, it’s an extension. That means this year at his $510,000 plus another 6 for $20 mil for a total of 6 years at 20.5 Mil, or 3.42 Mil per year.
That Average would put him at 14th highest paid kicker in 2019.

I’ll take it. This dudes leg is gonna be tired as hell from all the PATs hes gonna kick over the next 6 years.

Tyreek’s payday keeps getting smaller.

CWil03
CWil03

not really, if/when Tyreek is cleared I think the plan has always been to decide between him and Sammy as the number 1. Sammy is an easy cut next year to save a ton of money and give to Tyreek.

Z00keeper
Z00keeper

I just don’t see Tyreek getting a long term deal at this point.

starry1

Not worried about him, I’m worried this means we might lose Colquitt. Some $7-8m/year is a lot to have tied up in the kick squad.

Team Player
Team Player

Meh. Colquitt is stealing money until the backup QB plays. And it doesn’t matter then, either. For the opposite reason.

Mattl
Mattl

Colquitt is still the holder for Buttker too. Very important.

BleedingRedAndGold

Extremely important. Reid once called him the “place-kicker whisperer”, which to me he’s essentially another coach for the team, even though he’s officially a player. For someone who’s been consistently very good for as long as he has been, that’s no small thing, especially considering all the kickers he’s worked with since joining the team.

Kickers are a funny breed in the NFL, and are comparable to MLB pitchers in that mental stuff can really affect their accuracy. If DC’s been instrumental to helping kickers with that for years (and it sounds like he has), then he’s worth more than even a very good punter’s pay. Prolly something similar with long-snappers, as well. Colquitt also took less money than he could have gotten elsewhere to sign his current contract, out of team loyalty. IIRC, that was in part on his father’s advice.

ArrowheadRed
ArrowheadRed

I think they’re going to cut Colquitt.

Tony Sommer

More likely trade, once we eat the guaranteed part of his contract I bet a team would be willing to give up a 7th or something.

starry1

I know that PM makes Colquitt kind of redundant, but Colquitt is still the best at his job and I hate giving up even that small of an advantage.

CWil03
CWil03

Smart move, good kickers are hard to find, just ask the Bears.

Tried to be funny but it was kinda dumb and i know everyone’s going to click it.

stjoechief

So everybody gets extensions except the one guy we’re all waiting for. Sigh.

Simtex
Simtex

They have told him they won’t talk about a contract until he is at camp. So he just needs to report to camp and then sit in BV office until it’s done then go practice.

Leaf
Leaf

I wonder if all these recent signings are BV putting an exclamation point on that message.

Gersidi76
Gersidi76

Yuuup.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Makes sense. Butker was a deal that needed to get done but not right away. The Schwartz extension didn’t need to happen at all given he still has 2 more years left.

Berserker

Sure. They’re actively looking for Not Chris Jones guys to sign, just to show who’s got the bigger dick.

Slayer0810
Slayer0810

just to show who’s got the bigger dick

Probably CJ.

Berserker

Exactly.

BleedingRedAndGold

Fair to wonder about that, but I doubt Jones has any influence when it comes to getting rookies and non-DL players signed. Doing things that way would make the contracts he negotiated worse without significantly affecting the situation with Jones.

Leaf
Leaf

That wasn’t my point. It was more that this feels like BV saying “see what happens when you show up? I’ve got more important things then to play games “

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

Get the small guys done first.

CWil03
CWil03

small deals are easy to get done, Jones is probably asking for Mack and Donald money right now

Berserker

Heard somewhere that they’re about $25 million apart in guaranteed money. That is more than Butker’s entire contract.

slackator
slackator

$5 million is much easier to get done than $100+ millions
