Well, here we are Arrowhead Guys. The end of yet another week is fast approaching, and with it the end of one of the biggest TV series ever made.

Hot shit, I’m going to puke.

While much has been made about the rushed feeling of this last season, even more-so than the last, and the head-scratching plot-lines, this is still the day we’ve all been waiting for. To see how it all ends. And yet…

I’m hoping for one of two things tonight. I want to either be completely satisfied with how the show ends or completely pissed off. And not by the rushed timeline or out of character writing, but by the actual outcome of the story. The only true failure for this show, in my opinion, would be to end up delivering a product that fell somewhere between the two ends of the spectrum. Make an impact.

And for those of you who #DGAFGoT the end is also near. You will now have to find something new to tell everyone you don’t do.

Tonight’s Afternight thread has been scheduled, and I will have y’all know that I slaved away over a hot keyboard for fifteen, perhaps even twenty minutes to put it together for you. In my fatigues delirium, I lost track.

Be there or be square, boppers.

Does it mean we had a good draft when your first pick, who was chosen in the second rd., is already in the conversation about ROY?

I think it speaks more to the situation with hill, the QB, and the system tbh

interesting how important ‘fit’ is. Veach looks much better when you figure that in

I mean Kits not wrong, sure the writing is horrible but that doesnt take away from the hard work the actors have put into the last 10 years. As for the petition what do you really expect to come out of this because theres no chance HBO spends the 10s of millions it would take to call back and refilm the entirety of the season, not touching on the fact that they would have to find a writer and they would have to rewrite the entirety based off the same George RR Martin notes, and the fan base would still hate it because everybody has their own version of the ending and you cant appease them all.

The person that we should all be pissed off with is none other than George RR Martin himself, because hes to busy enjoying his newfound fame, and writing new nonASoIaF books, he cant be bothered to finish writing the 5th book that was promised to be finished 4 years ago much less the final 6th book. You dont like the past 2 seasons, blame him. Its like people begging to bring George Lucas back into fix Star Wars forgetting the fact that hes the one who gave us nonstop CGI and The Intergalactic CSpan trilogy, not to mention has anybody ever seen his original ideas for the Journal of the Whills?

Leaf
Leaf

Who says we aren’t mad at Martin? Doesn’t mean we have to like the BS season this had been.

slackator
slackator

Like it, no. I just think the petition is dumb because even if literally every person on Earth signed it, it wouldnt change anything and nothing would come of it. Do people really think HBO and D&D dont know what we think of it without the petition? I mean even the actors have come out and bashed the writing of this season.

BleedingRedAndGold

And even if they took losses in giving the fans a re-done “final season”, due to the expense of re-starting the production, the fans would view that season with eyes that are less forgiving and more critical. Trying to please a mob is a mug’s game.

I was looking at this tweet below, posted by Mitko in the Morning Huddle, and the other pff tweets for the rest of the NFL. They’ve gone through 28 of the teams so far, and they only have 9 OL who were rated 80 of higher, projected to start, but they have 36 DL (3-4 OLB included) who were rated 80 of higher.

Why do they hate OL so much?

Mitko
Mitko

So in their rating system, I believe they rate every snap of an individual player from a score of 1-100. I’d assume it’s easier for DL to bottom out their score than OL. What’s the worst play you’ve seen a DL make? Getting pushed back slightly or maybe getting Stone walled? Now what’s the worst play for an OL? Getting run into the QB or whiffing on a block? Oline problems are more obvious and noticable where even a bad DL play is still holding his gap.
Another way to look at it: say a play takes 6 seconds. The OL blocks the DL for 5 seconds, but at the last second the DL spins and sacks the QB. It only takes 1 second for a DL to make a play and get a 90 grade, while it only takes an OL 1 sec to ruin a play and get a 50.
I don’t know if this is true , but my best guess

Tyrone
Tyrone

This makes sense, but isn’t it supposed to be part of their grading that they are weighted so all positions are equal? If you just judge it by those gradings, there’s very few really good OL, yet almost every team has multiple really good to great DL. The Dlines should be dominating the Olines.

Mitko
Mitko

Yeah, it could also mean that OL just isn’t as good as it used to be. There’s a lot of talk of RPO and spread in college limiting the growth of oline too. I have no clue if this is true, I would say no as the NFL is a lot of RPO and spread now too.
My theory is that with human error an Oline loss looks worse and leads to a worse grade.
I actually applied for a job with PFF today so if they hire I’ll let you know

BleedingRedAndGold

I’d say that you’re on the right track, but it’s the other side of the coin that tells the tale; the Dline guys simply have more and better opportunities to “win” in their grading system, while the Oline guys have more opportunities to lose. Perhaps also the fact that an Oline “loss” is a big negative, while a Dline “win” is a big positive, so it stands to reason that for one unit a little success will cover for a lot of not-successes, while the other’s stuck with huge “oh shit” moments and no way to recover credit quickly.

My guess is that it’s a combination of things, because the AAF had developing Olinemen as a selling point for the league. And while that plays a role, IMO there’s bias in t6he system, too. The nature of the game virtually dictates that it has to be that way.

Tony Sommer

The Raptors and Bucks going to OT after the Raptors blow the late lead.

Speaking of which, they have to have the lamest team name in sports. Like Raptors are cool and all, but it has literally nothing to do with anything. It’s literally just an animal nobody would know about if it wasn’t for a movie. Could they really not come up with anything Toronto or Canada related?z

Tyrone
Tyrone

The pitfalls of starting a sports team in the mid 90s, when sports teams (especially NBA) were marketing themselves to little kids for some reason. That’s how half of the NBA ended up with dumb cartoon jerseys.

Tony Sommer

I can’t believe they haven’t rebranded by now.

Tyrone
Tyrone

They’ve changed everything except for the name. I can’t recall too many major sports teams changing names, no matter how dumb the name is.

Tony Sommer

The New Orleans Hornets did, so did the Charlotte Bobcats.

Tyrone
Tyrone

Yeah Bullets > Wizards (but that was driven by gun violence concerns)
Hornets > Pelicans (But that was sort of a delayed re-brand after moving cities)
Bobcats > Hornets (but they were going back to Hornets when is got freed up)

Are there any that were purely changed because they realized they made a terrible choice?

slackator
slackator

oh yeah you reminded me of another worse than even the Banana Slugs or the mighty Ham Fighters of Nipon (I know, its a joke among my friends) The Pelicans! There is no making cool a dumb flying annoyance that is a Pelican

Tony Sommer

slackator
slackator

funny but like I said dumb nonflying annoyance

Also just realized I got Gulls and Pelicans confused but it doesnt change my opinion

slackator
slackator

I dont know, I always found the Jazz to be pretty stupid even more so now in Utah, Lakers is dumb especially in California. Then you have the teams named after clothing: Knickerbockers, a variety of Socks. Trees and Banana Slugs in California, a color in Syracuse, Magic in Orlando, Nets in Brooklyn to maintain the NYNJ area team rhyming scheme. All the “Real” teams. Raptors seem pretty cool comparatively in my opinion

Tony Sommer

Jazz and Lakers were cool names for their original cities. The clothing ones are old school cool. Magic is because of Disney World at least.

I’ll agree with Nets.

slackator
slackator

I know why they are what they are but still a form of music, a fish or local style of boat, and magic? The clothing ones are old school for sure but they werent cool then and not now.

Tyrone
Tyrone

I much prefer team names that have proper meaning, even if it is something like Jazz (which I think was very cool for NO), Nets, Knicks. They sound way better than a stupid “cool” animal that has no significance.

Mitko
Mitko

I still maintain that if KC ever gets an NBA team they should be the splash as a nod to both the city of fountains and the three pointer

BleedingRedAndGold

And for the ensuing “splish-splash” jokes taken to the most juvenile extent the internet can manage. But I’m not saying no to the idea.

Tony Sommer

And it’s 2OT now.

Tony Sommer

And Giannis just fouled out. The Raptors really have no excuse not to win now.

BleedingRedAndGold

Birds of prey are also generally called raptors. As for how the Lakers came by the name, just look at the colors, gold trimmed with purple. Know an NFL team whose unis are purple with a little gold? (To address a part of what Slack was saying)

Mitko
Mitko

Fight me. I love the Raptors name

Tony Sommer

Ok, if I win will you cosign a letter to the Raptors to encourage them to change their name?

And I want to clarify what I mean. Sure he doesn’t have a system that is synonymous with his name but he isn’t afraid to bring in plays from the high school and college game that many deemed gimmicky. If he thinks the play will work on the pro level, he will add it to the playbook.

BleedingRedAndGold

I wonder at what point he will end up on Hoarders, because he’s got a considerable number of plays in his horde.

BleedingRedAndGold

Oh good grief. Me, the stickler for homophones, used the wrong “hoard” in that. Though he does have a considerable number of plays /for/ his horde.

Tony Sommer

I agree, but he won’t get love until he wins a Super Bowl.

The dumbest part of this petition is it’s just about season 8. I guess they were all fine with masterful writing like “you want a good girl but you need a bad pussy”.

Fucking proles

BleedingRedAndGold

It wasn’t always like this, but nowadays the ones who are hollering loudest for whatever change they demand are also the least willing and able to do anything about it other than yell.

Yeah, the switch in production and show runners really screwed things up. This should have run 10 seasons to really tell the ending the same way as the beginning

So is there another big finale tonight besides the season finale of Barry?

I kinda wish they would have waited for at least one more book to come out before doing Game of Thrones.

I haven’t seen the show since Season 1, so I’m probably the last person who is qualified to say anything at all about it, but I wish they had waited. Maybe it wouldn’t have come out as disastrously as I’ve read it has.

I wonder if George R. R. Martin wishes he hadn’t green-lighted this season…

Leaf
Leaf

The sad thing is they could have ended this generically and it would have still been one of the best shows ever. They got it into their heads that they needed to go out GoT style, with a shock and a spectacle. But they don’t have Martin’s ability so the writing suffered.

ArrowheadRed
ArrowheadRed

If what I read is true, HBO offered to make 20 episodes in Seasons 7 & 8, the producers did 13.

I have no issue with the major story points. I have issue with how the story has been driven at breakneck speed. Also the battle plans were so bad. They spent too much time exploding things and not enough time writing the story.

Sudden
Sudden

Last episode was the first good story episode in the last 3 seasons. The writers failed to sufficiently build Dany up to it but it was finally a return to style for the source material.

I’ve read the spoilers for this episode. It will be much the same.

Leaf
Leaf

This is where I am. The major sorry points are fine. Most have even been theorized in the past. But the focus on spectacle and ignoring character development really hurt.

Game of Thrones season 8 has been such a disappointment to me. I’ve watched all the shows, I bought DVDs, I’ve paid for HBO. And then Dan Weiss and David Benioff pull one of these on mecomment image

This season has been strangely uneven. There have been some great moments (Episode 2 was fabulous) interspersed with some of the craptastically contrived writing I hated in Season 7. I don’t expect to love the ending but there will be scenes that are amazing. The question is whether there will be enough of them to offset the rest of it.

Great HBO series have a history of subpar finishes. The Sopranos didn’t really end, it just stopped. Deadwood suffered the same basic problem as GoT: the showrunner got antsy to start another project and tried to compress three seasons of material into one. Rome just cost too much so it got compressed as well. And True Blood tanked when the showrunner deliberately wrote the plot into a cesspool then left it for someone else to mop up.

slackator

Most shows really should go the English/Anime model. One or two seasons and be done with it, if the fans really like something they can follow the cast and crew to another show because most writers cant plan out past a season or two without dragging things on horribly and losing everything that made the original seasons great

BleedingRedAndGold

Newsflash: In a completely unexpected turn of events, Chris Owings gets an RBI single. Witnesses are still too stunned to be able to recount how it happened; film at 11.

Today I realized that re-learning how to communicate is going to be a tougher row to hoe than I’ve yet realized. Might could be that I need a “spotter”, as in sniping plus weightlifting, but those don’t exist, I expect.
