Chiefs Trade for LB Darron Lee

The Chiefs trade for Jets LB Darron Lee

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded for Patrick Peterson in a blockbuster deal Jets LB Darron Lee for a 2020 6th round pick, per Terez Paylor.

Lee is a former 1st round pick of the Jets in the 2016 draft, taken 20th overall. At 6’1 and 230 lbs he looks like he will be a fit at WILL in Steve Spagnuolo’s 4-3 Under defense This raises questions about Hitchens playing the position, as previously reported, or moving to MIKE and Ragland potentially being replaced. That still leaves Chiefs fans to wonder what’s going on with fan favorite Dorian O’Daniel, who many want to see in the WILL backer role.

Or its very possible that new Jets Interim-GM Adam Gase didn’t like Darron Lee going 50 Shades of Steven Nelson with his tweet shortly after Jets GM Mike Maccagnon was released, a tweet that was soon deleted.

And just because I can, here are a look at his stats from his three years in the league. Nothing to write home about, but not the worst I’ve seen. Also you can check out Terez Paylor’s draft evaluation on him below.

Dwayne Bowe retiring as a Chief. Anyone else craving some Sonic all of a sudden? I wonder if its open.

Tyrone

I was pretty surprised by that. He was very good for us during some very bad years, so congratulations to him.

ForeverRanger91
ForeverRanger91

This was more surprising than both JC and DJ because Bowe has been out of the league for a couple of years.

Berserker

He saw his buddies do it, so he wanted some too.

Branden Albert next.

Bowe is also worthy of this too because he was one of the best players on terrible teams.

Berserker

Agreed.

He gets quite a bit of unfair criticism from some fans. His numbers only really dropped off in 2013…funny that…

hmills110
hmills110

His best years were after Andy came, and they started using him more intelligently. Not the big stats, but much more consistent, which was his main strike when he was racking up 1,000-yard seasons.

starry1

Yay?

This is the most boring off-season I can ever remember for awhile now. I’m not really down on any of our pick-ups (except Clark’s cost and fees), but the only one I’m truly excited about is Honey Badger.

You were not down on the Mahomes pick up, so of course this is boring

Apples and mangoes, dude.

KC Dude (A.K.A Zif)

I’m a little disappointed because we only grabbed one guy from the AAF that had already played for us. Missed out on Bausby, and Farrow II. Next off season we will get the XFL which, judging by the rules I have seen will be a crapfest.

Looks like PP just got suspended for PEDs. I feel like that could make a trade more likely, AND lower the comp. Thoughts?

Team Player

Think the price just dropped to a 4th. Make it happen

tsv0728
tsv0728

100% good with that comp. His PEDs would reduce his leverage to get a new contract too. Not that it would stop him from demanding it, but it will make it harder to follow through on any threat to sit.

PP failed his PP test while trying to sit?

Let the Meme wars begin!

The Chiefs should offer a 5th since Peterson will be missing the first six games while coming in to a new scheme and will probably spend the first two to four games back getting up to speed which only gives the Chiefs around eight to six games of productive CB play for the season. If the Cardinals bite I would be happy.

Anyone want to shed some light on his character concerns? I’ve seen some pretty sketchy shit mentioned on Twitter.

Late to practice once , verbal altercation with gf in public 3 years ago, suspended 4 games last year for drug abuse last year

Basically, he’s outspoken and didn’t hide it – it rubbed JETS fans the wrong way.

Oh, and everything Mitko mentioned.

Alright.

I’m actually ecstatic about this right now. Literally giddy when I saw the news. I giggled for probably 45 seconds straight.

So, I can see either Lee or DoD being the starting WIL, and the other one subbing in for the SAM in nickel/dime. That should improve our coverage vs RBs bigly, which might have been the single worst aspect of our defense last season.

I do like DoD still. But there’s a good chance that the “sub” SAM will end up playing more snaps than the “starting” SAM, so I won’t be heartbroken if Lee wins the starting WIL spot over DoD.

I do wish we’d gotten a more obvious MLB instead of somebody who will probably play WIL, because MLB is by far our weakest spot. But, Jamie Collins is starting to get old, and is more of a SAM than a MLB, so I’m not too disappointed that we passed on him. And…who knows, Spags had good success with Antonio Pierce, who was considered way too small to play MLB at the time…so maybe Lee does wind up taking Hitchens/Ragland off the field in the end.

Adding to the LB corps can only be good. I know nothing about him but I’m all about improving. Even if he ends up being only depth, a 6th is a good deal.

Really? I think we have something like 87 LBs at the moment. There is way more need to fill other positions first, like CB.

Berserker

87 LBs….?

I laughed way harder at this than I probably should have. Rec for you sir.

EAFOX

Adding a possible starter for a sixth round pick is a great deal. If his pass coverage skills are that good, it becomes a much better deal.

stjoechief

Fits the Veach profile of picking up high draft picks that have underperformed for late round picks. Similar to the Ragland and Erving trades. If it works out, great. If not, the cost was low. This does make me wonder where DoD fits into Spag’s plan, though.

Severely Concussed
Severely Concussed

DOD is a low cost backup, that could still steal a starting spot. I think we now have depth/competition at all three spots. I could see Attachou/Hitchens /Lee.

Berserker

Disagree. MLB….well, I guess we have depth at that spot, but we don’t have a starting quality player there. Unless maybe Lee ends up winning that job.

ChiefOfTheWolfpack
ChiefOfTheWolfpack

I love that strategy. The best investments are low-risk and high ceiling, and Veach seems to be killing it in that department. It worked with Erving, Lucas, and Ward.

Anyone else notice this trade went down right after the Pats agreed to terms with Collins?

go_saleaumua
go_saleaumua

Collins probably wasn’t coming here. There never seemed to be a shred of interest. Nothing.

Cruised the Jets’ site on SBN…apparently we had this deal teed up for weeks, but the NYJ wanted a five. The GM gets tossed and the HC takes our offer of a six.

Tarkus

But Veach the Reach!

Z00keeper

The Jets obviously weren’t keeping him since they didn’t pick up his 5th year option. Don’t think Collins had anything to do with it.

Look at the price tag on Collins as well versus that on Lee.

Knew he had got better but hadn’t thought jump was that massive from the analytics side…… The difference from Ragland/Hitchens to Lee/DOD in sub packages will make world on difference on passing downs

So… New name for the Chiefs D – Badger pack?

Why did I ever hate this guy, besides being LSU and SEC? He has very loudly became one of my favorite players on the team and he hasnt even played a down yet.

Glad they got a guy who can fill the leadership vacuum on the D.

WTF_Chiefs

Fast and athletic linebacker for a defensive scheme that relies on them……..guy is good in space…….will be interesting to see where he ends up……. Would think his superior athleticism to Hitchens would make natural fit to Mike but history says it’s been a roller coaster for him there….wouldn’t feel terrible about Lee to Sam, Hitchens @ Mike and DOD to Will with Hitchens Lee rotating at the Mike in Nickel

According to ESPN, his salary guarantee was voided by the suspension. They also speculate Wilson will be one of the starting LBs?
