Monday Night Open Thread

Well here we are, back to the grind of the work week. Monday Monday Monday, all day and half the night. On the bright side I have Good Friday off from work as a holiday, which worked out as I have a party to cater on Saturday. You know what that means? Time to fire up that pit!

I’m smokin’ up some burnt end and party chicken. I’m guessing I’ll prolly end up throwing a few extra things in for fun. Any ideas?

New on the Tube

I remember when I used to care about things like QB’s in a draft class. No longer. Now I can just laugh at this sort of non-sense. Sorry not sorry Brandon.

3rd shift. Go there, go to bed, or go somewhere else. Or stay here, while the rest do those things.

BleedingRedAndGold

So the Royals lost, with zero help from the starting pitcher leaving the ‘Pen to take the blame again. Starter blew his lead, leaving the game to the ‘pen and the offense. One pen pitcher blew it, and the offense couldn’t score a single run to keep it going after that.

The narrative says that the pen lost the game. I say that one and only one bullpen pitcher lost the game, by giving up 2 runs, but the batters did nothing to help after putting them up by one. Starter couldn’t win it, but escapes blameless. One bullpen pitcher threw two good innings, catches part of the blame, because reasons. Offense only did enough to ensure the entire bullpen gets blamed collectively by the fans. This, apparently, is baseball fan logic. I dislike it. Boxxy blew it, sure, but the O could only generate 1 run in support of the pen, and IMO the previous three don’t count. Starter pissed those away. But the narrative demands that people say that the pen blew a 4-run lead to lose the game. I call bullshit.

There really isn’t much to say- the pitching staff is just bad. Lopez and Keller the next two so it should be a lot more favorable, but this bullpen is gonna need a lot of help to get by.

A Lunar Ting

Pick almost any reliever and are we really confident we’re getting a good result right now? It’s just a collective of suck, and the rotation just isn’t that good from top to bottom. Don’t need to look at their FIPS, ERA, etc (it’s April, relax) to know it’s been bad.

BleedingRedAndGold

I’ll disagree with you to an extent. There are good pitchers on the staff, but there are also soft spots amongst all the pitchers. However, and that said, the O couldn’t give the pitchers much help tonight. One run for the pen in how many innings? Wasn’t enough, and I don’t want to hear about the first three, WRT the bullpen. Fillmyer ensures that those didn’t count for the win.

Net result, offense generates one run, one bullpen pitcher coughs up two, compared to Fillmyer’s three. Apparently the bullpen isn’t allowed to give up any runs at all, or they suck. Wait, what? Oh, right. Baseball, so with three batters up in the 9th and needing a score to tie, and three batters in a row striking out, only the third batter’s to blame for the loss. #baseballfanlogic Not for me, thanks. My mind doesn’t work that way, despite accusations of using strawmen on a regular basis. Except I didn’t. I left a shoe, somebody found it a good fit, and declared “strawman!” because they could force their foot into it, despite the outs I left scattered about. Funny, I thought that the strawman fallacy was overridden by taking offense where none was offered.

3 certainties in life Death Taxes and Royals bullpen will blow a save opportunity

A Lunar Ting

Looks like another likely loss where the offense scored 4 or more runs. Tsk.

Tony Sommer

8 losses where the offense scored 4+ runs, most in the MLB.

A Lunar Ting

Pretty shocking for an offense as bad as the Royals on paper coming into the season, small sample or not.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Good ol Boxberger

BleedingRedAndGold

Nicely done Billy, even if the ChiSox catcher blew it. Stole two at once.

BleedingRedAndGold

And with that run. it’s the bullpen’s game now. They’ll still need run support, but the O managed to get them a bit of a lead back, after Fillmyer blew his lead.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Need the bullpen to step it up now!

BleedingRedAndGold

Two scoreless innings from Barlow, can’t step it up higher than that. Of course, if Fillmyer hadin’t blown the entirety of his lead, the lead would be bigger than one. The rules of baseball might award Fillmyer the win, presuming, but IMO he didn’t win. He left early and with a tie, not a lead.

So it’s the ‘Pen’s game, win or lose, but so far, they’ve held the line.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Many people despise the W-L stat for pitchers

A Lunar Ting

It’s logically incoherent.

BleedingRedAndGold

Maybe it’s Seth Keysor’s influence, but I’m losing trust for a lot of MLB stats. I mean, maybe I’m missing something, but why does getting a walk count against a player’s batting average? And that’s just for starters.

A Lunar Ting

Walks don’t count against BA as they are not ABs if it ends in a BB. They are instead added to OBP, and categorized into the broader category of PA’s.

Baseball has a very rich (probably the richest) library of stats that quantify what is going on in the field if you know where to look. Won’t have them posted on the broadcast, but they are there.

A Lunar Ting

Especially now, there’s very little you can’t find out about nowadays if you put enough effort and research into it.

BleedingRedAndGold

The operative word being “enough”. I’m not getting paid to work hard at becoming an expert on MLB statistics, especially in comparison to the way the games are called. But thanks for the update, appreciate it.

A Lunar Ting

Understood! It’s a very old game so there’s an odd bit of anachronism, majesty, and the modern all intermingling with each other. It makes for a funny relationship.

BleedingRedAndGold

I get that. I mean, Ronald Reagan used to call games on the radio basically from the box score reports – and as I understand it, was pretty good at it, too. OTOH, /one/ bad outing can make a pitcher who’s otherwise pretty lock-down look bad for a long time. Look at Peralta. Dunno his current ERA, but at one point, it was 9, and from what I’ve seen of him, a 9 ERA isn’t a good take on him. He’s better than that.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Agreed Peralta is better. But Boxberger ain’t. He was toast last year.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Lol Barlow just balked.

BleedingRedAndGold

Still escaped the inning scoreless. I agree with The Wonder Dog, give him a chance at another inning. I’d like to see him with a chance to settle down, and for all that fans argue with some of Yost’s decisions (and he’s no more perfect than anyone else), he tends to take a longer view when it comes to his players.

CHIEFSandSABRES

Yeah he has pitched really well tonight.

Tony Sommer

After that exciting first day, the NBA playoffs have been largely predictable. Philly is destroying Brooklyn, and the Clippers are unlikely to put up much of a fight against Golden State tonight.

I guess it might just be because I am a Knights fan and we are turning the Sharks into soup.

The announcer just hyped the crowd getting free Frosties as if it was a huge play.

That’s good news. Sorry I’ve been out for a few days and I think I missed what it was all about, but all the same I’m glad to hear she’s back.

BleedingRedAndGold

Fillmyer’s pitching a beauty, especially compared to his outing against SEA. Been really efficient tonight, closed out the 4th having thrown only 52 pitches.

BleedingRedAndGold

Well, he did until the 5th. Now the offense4 has to support the ‘Pen from a tie position.

CHIEFSandSABRES

You jinxed him!

BleedingRedAndGold

Starting pitching wasn’t good enough to win, though, regardless of the BS Fillmyer had to deal with. Fillmyer let the circus get into his head, so seems he needs to toughen up mentally. I couldn’t manage it, but I have MH issues and have never had a future as a pro pitcher. He’s the one getting big bucks to play baseball.

I shudder every night I see Ned Yost puts Chris Owens in the lineup, not a fan of his at all. But the homer helps…

Working on a new series to get ready for the draft. Let me just say that the first one is going to be a doozy.
