How a wild offseason has affected the Chiefs’ Super Bowl odds for next season | The Kansas City Star

Despite moving on from veteran defensive leaders Justin Houston, Dee Ford and Eric Berry earlier this week, the Chiefs remain a favorite to win next year’s NFL championship game.
Kansas City is listed at 8-to-1 to win the 2020 Super Bowl, per BetOnline. Those are tied for the best odds on the sheet, along with the New England Patriots, who are also 8-to-1.

Chiefs reflect cold-hearted business of the NFL in their swap of Eric Berry for Tyrann Mathieu | Yahoo! Sports

The cost of getting what Veach called “the ultimate chess piece” for Spagnuolo in an effort to improve a 31st-ranked defense that cost Kansas City a Super Bowl berth last season came down to more than dollars and cents. For an organization that has largely valued continuity since Reid’s arrival in 2013, the signing of Mathieu came at the expense of Berry, who at his best boasts some of the same versatility as Mathieu. It was the latest sign of the team’s urgency to improve the defense quickly, and at the expense of sentimentality.

Since their 37-31 loss in the AFC championship game to the New England Patriots – in which the Chiefs surrendered 524 yards – Kansas City has
fired defensive coordinator Bob Suttontraded its best pass rusher in Dee Ford and released two team icons in Berry and outside linebacker Justin Houston, who set the team’s single-season sack record in 2014.

Chiefs’ defense now faces leadership void. Who must fill it? | KSHB 41

It will be up to Mathieu and Jones to earn it during the offseason, through training camp, and on a game-by-game basis by setting the tone with their work ethic.

I throw Fuller in that mix too, because it’s a big season for him. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal after two seasons in Washington and now entering his second season with the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a three-year contract with defensive end Alex Okafor, a source told ESPN on Thursday. According to NFL Network, which first reported the news, the deal is worth up to $24 million.

Tyrann Mathieu aims to lead new look Chiefs defense | 247 Sports

“When the Chiefs called, it was the easiest decision for me. Great organization, first class organization, great coaching staff, great people in the building, and then you have a quarterback that hopefully he’s going to play in the next ten Super Bowls. Like I said, my decision was easy. I think the hardest part is just knowing that me coming in, I’ve got some big shoes to fill. And I’m going to do it to the best of my ability, to be a leader every single day.”

Tyrann Mathieu’s latest role is one the Chiefs wanted him to accept: the defense’s next leader | The Athletic

Inside the Chiefs’ facility last month, Veach and the coaching staff were dazzled by the extreme pride Mathieu played with at different positions on the field for the Texans. Veach described film sessions where the entire coaching team smiled when looking at Mathieu’s play from last season when he played large snaps as the slot cornerback, the strong safety in the box and the free safety in center field. Often, Veach said the group rewound plays multiple times to watch Mathieu execute different tasks at such a high level.

“I’m struggling to find out what he can’t do.” Spagnuolo said of Mathieu during one session.

Five Things to Know About New Chiefs’ LB Damien Wilson | Chiefs.com

Wilson played outside linebacker in Dallas’ 4-3 defensive scheme and primarily did so as the strong-side, or SAM, linebacker. Nineteen of Wilson’s 22 career-starts for the Cowboys were at the SAM position.

Essentially, a 4-3 defense includes three linebackers while in its base formation: the weak-side linebacker (WILL), middle linebacker (MIKE) and strong-side linebacker (SAM). It remains to be seen how he’ll be used in Kansas City. It’s worth mentioning, however, that Wilson was taught all three positions while in Dallas.

Through first wave of NFL free agency, are Patriots still favorites in AFC? | NFL.com

Maurice Jones-Drew:
Patriots will take a back seat to the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs
If we’re talking about the AFC East, then absolutely. But I’m not so sure the
Patriots are the premier AFC team heading into 2019. The Kansas City Chiefs are the favorite in my book. They feature the reigning league MVP inPatrick Mahomes and the NFL’s top-scoring offense, and I fully expect the team to bring in a quality running back and improve the defense — in free agency or the draft.

Eric Berry leaves a lasting legacy in Kansas City, but one that’s haunted by two words: If only … | The Athletic

However else Berry’s time in Kansas City will be remembered, the phrase “if only” is almost inevitably involved. If only that fumble hadn’t bounced to Andrew Luck (2013 season playoffs). If only the officials hadn’t called that ridiculous holding penalty on Eric Fisher (2016 season playoffs). If only Berry’s healthy years had switched to 2017 and 2018 when the offense came alive and Patrick Mahomes came to town.

If only …

ok, so we got Tyrann Mathieu and that’s all well and good, but what happened to the whole “players will sign for almost nothing just to play in KC with Patrick Mahomes” … I mean, Honey Badger ain’t cheap, neither is Okafor

c’mon guys, prove you love KC: play for FREE!

Sure am excited to have a fiery, tenacious, elite player leading our defense ON THE FIELD and not the sidelines. Haven’t had that in a long time… Even when Berry WAS on the field. He always did his job, and absolutely was a leader, but I never felt his energy dispersed across the entire defense, if that makes sense. Tyrann is gonna be more flamboyant and in your face about it. Like a Brian Dawkins.

ArrowSpread
ArrowSpread

Come at me! And don’t bring up his tantrum vs the Chargers… That wasn’t leadership, that was pure frustration. And understandably so.

ta2tony21

In the past I felt he was an inspiration on the field with his intensity.

Not this last year tho, he just wasn’t the same player.

ArrowSpread
ArrowSpread

I felt it.. Sometimes. I felt it wasn’t on display as much as it shoulda been. Not to say that HE wasn’t always intense.. I just dunno that I ever felt like it was infectious. I think he mostly, calmly went about his business and was more a quiet leader during games.

Could be just recency bias.

ta2tony21

Could be. Almost seems hard to remember prime Berry at this point. Oh well….I guess time heels everything.

Think about this: playing for a team that was just in the SB and they are reminiscing about the good old days of having an incredible fan base.

Great look for Chiefs Kingdom
Horrible look for Snowbird City

And it’s right. I’ve lived in all three cities (including StL).

I must admit with Darby here as long as he is / was and nothing yet has me feeling like no news is no longer good news. They have 48 hours to do a full medical workup on what now isn’t even a run for the hills injury in an ACL tear.

Darby comes in for a visit, Chiefs say hey we like you can we view your medical records. He agrees, they confirm its like everyone else. Then offer him a contract. All of which could be done in half a day.

Great collection Sporting! Plenty to look thru waitin to start my route today. Delayed freight turned an easy day into 13+ hours.

It has been over 12 hours since we signed someone … I went to bed trusting that Veach didn’t.

I feel let down completely. How can we be expected live like this?

This off-season has been a roller coaster but I am optimistic about our defense.

It sounds like we still have some cap space to spend, right? I’d love to see a good to great CB koin us to opposite Ward so we can move Fuller to the slot.

Offense is ready to go. At this point I would just hope for a top 20 and i think we’d be in a very good position.

I’m going to the gym in about 2 hours. Something is sure to happen then.

Fair enough, I will allow a two hour reprieve from my FA signing demands.

Still waiting on news re: Darby

As always, we’ll have it FIRST!

ElPasoJason
ElPasoJason

I now EXPECT that from you and the gang Tony. You are victims of your own success! Haha, just messing.

Love this site. I come here more often than I ever did at that Abandoned Place.

Darby spent a full day here, do we know if he stayed the night?

ta2tony21

I don’t “know” that, but last I heard he had not left.

We’re lucky, we have a good team here, and we all work together and take great pride and having breaking news published before other sites is something we’ve had pretty good success with.

Cyber stalking the Chiefs eh?

I’ll allow it.

So I have now been THROUGH Kansas City TWICE in thw last year without being able to stop for BBQ.

Once because I had to immediately head to Lawrence for work and the second time because I landed in KC and had to drive to Manhattan at 1 in the AM. Then flew out of Manhattan.

I am cursed to be able to get close and not be able to stop. I will make it for a full trip one of these days. Hopefully training camp in August.

workingmansdead

Flew out of Manhattan? Is that a thing? Do you fly crop dusters?

ElPasoJason
ElPasoJason

Apparently it is … I guess there are about 4- 5 flights in and out of there a day. Picture a large payless shoe store parking lot and you’ve got an idea of the size of the airport.

Nice! I love small airports.

So let me see if I have this straight. So far in free agency, we’ve lost Ford, Houston and Berry and we’ve signed a DE Okafor, LB Wilson and Safety Mathews. Does that sound about right? 😛

ElPasoJason

We lost Nelson also and signed Carlos Hyde

You are correct on the drops and adds. However, they have also lost Steven Nelson and are looking to replace him with Darby.

By week 4 he might start claiming he’s blocking for Jim Kelly at this rate.

upamtn

… also, the Chiefs are cheap and wouldn’t extend my contract with a hefty pay raise …

VChiefsFan
VChiefsFan

I think everyone missed the point, lol, Veach basically traded for cheaper players at the same positions. Safety for safety, LB for LB, and we all suspected that Ford would be playing as a DE in a 4-3. Is everything he’s done about cap space? That’s what I’m wondering.
